Litany Against Fear

I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain.

*** History ***

Litany Against Fear was founded in 3034 by Issac Van Houten right after the founding of the Free Rasalhague Republic.  The unit itself was born from an age old dispute aging back to the Rasalhague Consortium.  They rise against the tactics used by the Successor States to assimilate people and establish their authority.  They have a hatred for all governments including their very own home nation.  They feel the formation of the Free Rasalhague Republic was a pathetic way to create a boarder between two enemies instead of giving their people independence.

In 2330, Litany served the Rasalhague military as the 66th.  The unit brought combat to the Combine front who were interested in dominating the Consortium in order to expand their rule.  Unfortunately, the Combine was successful.  The Scandinavian culture clashed with the Japanese culture of the Combine who attempted to assimilate them rather than embrace them.  Their actions were seen as terrorism by the Combine however the Rasalhague military saw them as their only chance of liberation.  They only targeted Combine military forces and government officials including bases of operation.

In 3004 the Lyran Alliance entered the picture.  The former Consortium greeted them as liberators so the 66th decided to join their military to help liberate their people.  In 3030 the war ended, with them becoming victorious, but the 66th learned their true motive.  They felt as though they were all tricked by every government involved.  The Lyrans were in it to create a border between themselves and the Combine.  Also, while this may not be true, the 66th suspected that the Rasalhague government accepted Lyran interference to make more money through trade deals between the Lyrans and Combine, not to protect their people and culture.  In 3034, around the beginning of the Ronin Wars, the 66th became tired of war and became a rogue unit under the name of “Litany Against Fear.”

The nations they fight consider them as a pirate band or terrorist organization.  However, most of the people they fight for see at them as freedom fighters, standing up to the horrors of the Inner Sphere.  They fight for those who can't rely on their own government to protect them.  They fight Mercenary units who make profit by killing rioters brave enough to protest against those who have abused them for years. They oppose the governments who hire mercenaries to destroy their own kind in order to use fear to establish control.  They rise up against the power hungry and fight the pathetic hypocritical governments, and their armies, who dare to censor or destroy their own people.

*** Personalities ***

The Litany Against Fear is a constant changing roster.  Their current leader is Issac Van Houten, the son of Katrina and Vladimir Van Houten, who were the original founders of the unit.  Issac learned how to pilot a BattleMech from them and inherited their values which drive the unit.  He also inherited his father’s BattleMech.  “The Archetype” is a standard ASN-21 Assassin who’s legacy has become the mascot of the unit.  “The Archetype” has managed to survive for years while suffering battle damage and the wear and tear of constant use.  Vlad Van Houten was known for his uncanny ability to dodge fire and place accurate shots while piloting it.  Issac is known for doing the same thing, being trained by his father, but is also known for his leadership abilities inherited from his mother.  Issac carries on the legacy of his father and mother who both died during the Ronin Wars.

Kavellrists Olga and Katerina Gastopiv are identical twins known for working together with unsurpassed precision.  Warriors who combat them feel like they are fighting a Thug, which in reality, they are facing two standard issue PNT-9R Panthers native to the Draconis Combine. They are part of the Command Lance and work as Issac's bodyguards.  They take their work very seriously.

Kavellrist Kal Polczyk is an avid heavy 'Mech pilot who recently joined Litany Against Fear.  He has above average skills that rival most of the Inner Sphere warriors who face him.  Kal is known for pressing an attack, taking advantage of damaged units, and will sometimes be the first to strike the most powerful unit on the battlefield depending on his mood.  He takes a lot of risks but is not as reckless as Issac.  Currently, Kal pilots his previously owned QKD-4G Quickdraw with the rear facing medium lasers pointing forward.

Lieutenant Rebecca Van Biezen is the last of the original commanders and founders of Litany Against Fear.  She has a patch over her right eye and has recently earned the callsign “Dead-eye.”  While such a callsign can be offensive to some, to Rebecca, it shows her dedication to serve Litany despite her handicap.  She earned the wound in battle after a nasty fall in her Catapult BattleMech.  Issac believes that Rebecca's real name is Rebecca Unther.  She would then be the long lost daughter of Sergent Unther, also called “Dead-eye,” currently in service with Hanson's Roughriders.  This is just speculation despite the fact that she has frightening similarities to him.

*** Dress, Awards and Decorations ***

Warriors dress in whatever they feel is comfortable and it is obviously weather appropriate.  There is no standard uniform but they wear the colors of the unit, black and white, with decorations representing rank.  Kavellrists wear a silver star, Lieutenants wear a silver star with a sword behind it, Korprals wear a silver star with two swords behind it, and Kaptens wear the same stars as Korprals with a silver bar below it.  The Major, who has the highest authority, uses the same silver star as a Korpral with a second bar on top of it.  In order to show their allegiance to Litany each member is required to bear a tattoo (the symbol behind the Assassin in their insignia) on their entire back.  A member may doctor up the pattern as they see fit but it must resemble the symbol.

*** Tactics and Camouflage ***

The unit is unpredictable.  Most of the time they focus on guerrilla style fighting, hitting their enemy where it hurts, then retreating to repair and reload so they can do it again or finish their foe.  Otherwise they specialize on ambushing their enemy and even night combat.  They fight dirty and show no mercy to their enemies.  They do not have a lot of BattleMechs and will utilize cheap vehicles, specifically Scorpion Light Tanks, in their place.  When they can they use cheap BattleMechs like the Urbanmech and Hornet to round out their forces.

While they don’t have infantry in their unit they will supply rioters and other rebels with a variety of weapons (usually ballistic rifles and LAWs) so they can support them where needed.  They are transported with improvised vehicles and sometimes APC's if they have support from the local militia.  Depending on how skilled the rioters are they will supply them with cheap Ultralight BattleMechs such as the Seeker and Guardian.

While they have two aerotech fighters they will rarely use them while supporting ground targets.  However, they have used different types of bombs in the past to soften up enemies or destroy enemy supply lines.  The fighters spend their time defending their Union dropship in a pinch.  Litany will use conventional fighters instead, which are cheap, easy to maintain, and have little risk to use.

Litany Against Fear will use all kinds of camouflage but they do have a parade scheme.  They paint their units a solid black and compliment them with ghost white highlights.  The insignia is placed on the left shoulder of a BattleMech and any where visible on other machines.
