Cause we all do it. Warhammer 40K Vehicles as Battletech
« on: October 11, 2012, 08:05:02 PM »

Lets face it, we all do it, or have 40K Fans for friends who are curious about it.  here are a few of mine.

Crocodile tank

Overview
News of the Mackies Deployment in 2443 sent ripples across the inner sphere.  the Free Wolrds league knew that the technology would soon spread and began a series of crash programs to develop an effective counter to the new war machine, while building designs of their own.  the Crocodile tank was the product of 5 year of think tank effort to create an effective counter, and when first deployed by the FWLM was a complete disaster, with nearly an entire regiment of the tanks eviscerated by a mere Reinforced Company of Mackie and Crossbows deployed by the LCAF.  the Crocodile was subsequently buried until just prior to the Reunifacationw ar, where it competed with  TechniCorp's Manticore tank for a SLDF contract.

Capabilites
The MK I was a product of old school thinking, being outfited with a combat Fission engine and a 210 mm Heavy Rifled Cannon.  while impressive for the Age of War, athe era of the battlemech showed that a Fission engine was plain unsafe for crews and environments, and the Cannon lacked capacity and firepower to breach newer mech armor.

by the dawn of the Reunifacation war the more modern Crocodile sported significant improvements.  a more modern 120mm heavy autocannon in the turret doubled the effective firepower against battlemechs.  twelve and a half tons of plate armor provided enough coverage to resist the most powerful weapons at the time.  Finally twin Sponsoon mounted machine guns provided excellent coverage against infantry forces.  the 265 rated Fusion engine was well built, but relatively esoteric, and only Irtech could build the parts needed to maintain it.

Deployment
The Crocodile was fast on it's way to replacing the Kestral and Agustus tanks as the FWL main battle vehicle, but it's first outing sealed it's fate.  any Crocodiles remaining had their Fission engines stripped and they were used for target practice as purchased Merkava's from the Terran Hegemony and T-12 Clones replaced them.  During the Reunification war roughly a Division's worth of Crocodile Mk IIIs were deployed among the Marik Auxiliary Corps.  While they performed admirably, the Manticore was more attractive to SLDF purchasers

Variants
during the succesion wars, mothballed Crocodiles became testbeds for Irtech's Binary Laser Cannon. Results from the weapons proved inconclusive and the vehicles were relegated to Factory Security where time wore them down.  it is believed the last Crocodile was defeated in 2941 when a Battlemaster felled by tank number 42 of the Irtech defense force suffered a cockpit destruction, and fell on top of the very vehicle that defeated it.

Overview: The Breacher is a little known SLDF Infantry Carrier that was built for running right up to enemy fortifications and offloading infantry platoons.  designed to have well protected flanks and be part of a well coordinated effort, this late reunification war vehicle was never popular, though the few times it was deployed against the Taurian Concordant, it proved to be a nightmare for TDF partisans.

Capabilites
The Breacher is anything but subtle.  the heavy 72 ton frame is built around an XL fusion engine and infantry compartment and clad in nine and a half tons of ferro fibrous armor.  on each side of the vehicle is a pair of large lasers mounted in sponsors  these weapons were designed to defend against Battlemechs and tanks, as well as to soften defensive walls.  Once the vehicle delivers it's payload it is to reverse power and extricate immediately, as the flank and rear armor are not able to withstand prolonged engagment, and it lacks any other equipment to continue such a fight.

Deployment
Only about 40 Breachers were ever built all deployed to the VI Corps.  while they performed well above expectations they were difficult to maintain and far to expensive for their capabilities.  the Breachers were later Mothballed and did not see action again in the Inner Sphere.  all 40 were later taken by Kerensky on the Exodus, where they were subsequently stored again until Operation Klondike

Variants
10 Breachers were used in the siege of the Black Brian by Clan Jade Falcon on Dagda.  these vehicles had thier engines downgraded to standard fusion engines and thier laser sponsoons replaced with massive batteries of machine guns to provide excellent cover fire inside the close confines of the Black Brian.  the Infantry Compartment was doubled and twin Ultra Autocannons provided direct forward firepower.  Studying the Breacher Blueprints, it is believes that early Huitzilopochtli were based on a few Breacher frames.

Hippo APC

Overview
The Hippo is a Rasalhauge Dominion vehicle developed at the turn of the 32nd century designed to compete with the Giggens APC to assist in transporting Elemental infantry through rough terrain.  it was built to be Cheap, durable, and effective for both Battle armor and Conventional infantry.  the final product passed with flying colors, a point of Pride for Odin manufacturing after the debacle that was the Beowulf IIC.

Capabilites.
the Hippo is aptly name considering the frame was constructed specifically to accommodate 5 Golem Battle armor Suits, with a drivers compartment taking up one quarter of the space of the vehicle.  this makes the armored personnel carrier much taller then competing Saxon and Giggens designs.  the remaining qualities of the vehicle are surprisingly low tech, with 9 tons of old fashioned Star Slab armor, and a 120 rated Internal Combustion Engine is a well established engine design, copied from FWL Vehicles.  weaponry is surprisingly sparse, with a pair of AP Gauss Rifles with a single ton of ammunition.  Learning lessons from the Jihad, Odin also installed a Broad Spectrum ECM suite to counter any C3 systems in use.  these two defensive weapons are about the only piece of definitively clan technologies mounted on the vehicle.  despite this the Hippo is a cheap, well protected and frighteningly effective APC for both Battle Armor and conventional Infantry.

Deployment
The Hippo is mass produced and found in every Second Line Galaxy and numerous Elemental heavy front line Galaxies.  The design was shared heavily with Clan Hells Horses as a result of Khan Kabrinski's overtures of friendship to his former clan.  whether the Horses will pass the design on to other clans or the exiles remains to be seen.

Variants
a heavy fire support variation replaces the ECM suite with additional AP Gauss Rifles.

Overview
Realizing that building up to a Multi Mech Regiment force was nearly impossible in the post jihad era, Colonel Anton Black and Captain Stacy Church had to figure out how to build up the Dragoons to a fighting force that was both feared and respected across the inner sphere once again.  when the Light Combat Team model was determined to be to big to be effective and not well equipped for offensive operations.  it was decided to fall back on the Star League independent regiment model, and specifically in light of the SLDF Field Manual released by the Republic Intellegence Service, follow the 331st Royal Battlemech Regiments more esoteric methods.  deciding that one company needed to carry heavy armor, a decision was made to commission a combat tank that would be just as much a symbol of Wolf's Dragoons as the Imp, Annihilator, Shogun, and Hoplite of old were.  thus the Jaime MBT was born.

Capabilities
The Jaime MBT Was built to pack devastating firepower at long range, for protracted battles, and be able to defend itself up close.  Whats more the tank was designed to be built in bulk.  using the 180 Fusion engine from Goblin tanks, and constructed on the frame of Defiance built Manticores was a start., the turret was completely redesigned to incorporate the massive Defiance "Godhammer" Snub Nosed Artillery Cannon.  5 tons of ammunition feed the weapon in a case protected bin.  defensively the Jaime mounts an ER medium laser in a forward facing mount, and sponsoon mounted machine guns cover the flanks against infantry attacks.  Ten and a half tons of Heavy Ferro Fibrous Armor blanket the vehicle covering it with almost 80% of the maximum possible protection for the platform.

Deployment
The Jaime is being built by Ark Royal Mechworks for both the Dragoons and the Kell Hounds.  the vehicle has already proven itself against Clan Jade Falcon trials of possession, where a company of these vehicles decimated the re-minted Vau Galaxies 94th Striker Cluster.

I wish I could get Solaris Armor works to do vehicles with both Sponsoons and Regular turrets, cause right now I am kind of BSing the mass of them.  That and Super Heavy Vehicles.

I am still trying to find out which designs are behind them.

Predator, Land Raider, Razorback, and Leamun Russ respectively.

A Long Tom for  a Leman Russ?

And what I always wanted to see was a Mole.

And what I always wanted to see was a Mole.

specifically the snub nosed cannon version with the 20 hex range.  from what I gather the Battle Cannon is a long range wide blast beat stick.  subtle as a chainsaw as far as weapons go.

I am not familiar with the Mole.  most of my 40K experience comes from the Horus Heresy, Caiphas Cain Novels, and Dawn of War.
