Welcome to Phase Three of the Quicksilver Program where this time we will be designing seven (7) Clan OmniVehicles. First up will be the Clan Helicopter Gunship and it must be powered by a Fusion Engine. Keep in mind that this VTOL is being built just after the Truce of Tukayyid (3052) on the Clan Homeworlds and must adhere to Clan Tech Level 2 rules of the time. Finally all entries must follow established Naming Conventions for Clan Vehicles meaning Gods of War should be your guide.
The six Clans are involved in the creation of these Combat OmniVehicles are Hell’s Horses, Blood Spirit, Star Adder, Ice Hellion, Wolf, and Diamond Shark. The effort to build a new Clan Armored Corps is so far pretty cooperative between these six. I was thinking Ice Hellion might be your best choice for manufacturer of this design but I will leave that up to you. Coyote as well as Kindraa Payne and Kindraa Kline of the Fire Mandrills we actively assist.
Steel Viper and Ghost Bear originally forwarded the IIC Vehicle Compromise which largely ignored by both sides in the debate. They along with Cloud Cobra, Goliath Scorpion, Nova Cat, and Snow Raven have little to no interest in the OmniVehicle project. I could see an observer or some kind of peripheral involvement at best but apathy is the rule of the day here. Burrock, Jade Falcon, and Smoke Jaguar all hate this whole concept and will go out of their way to wreck Phase Three if possible.
I have finalized the Primary Industrial Commitments of the Clans following the Quicksilver Program.
Primary Industrial Commitments
Blood Spirit [3 OmniMechs & 1 OmniVehicle]
Burrock [3 OmniMechs & 1 OmniFighter]
Cloud Cobra [1 OmniMech, 2 OmniFighters, & 1 Aerospace Fighter]
Coyote [2 OmniMechs, 1 OmniFighter, & 3 BattleMechs]
Diamond Shark [3 OmniMechs, 1 OmniFighter, 1 OmniVehicle, & 1 Aerospace Fighter]
Fire Mandrill [2 OmniMechs, 1 OmniFighter, & 1 BattleMech]
Ghost Bear [5 OmniMechs, 2 OmniFighters, & 1 BattleMech]
Goliath Scorpion [1 OmniMech, 1 OmniFighter, & 2 BattleMechs]
Hell's Horses [1 OmniMech, 1 OmniFighter, 3 OmniVehicles, & 1 BattleMech]
Ice Hellion [2 OmniMechs, 1 OmniFighter, & 1 OmniVehicle]
Jade Falcon [6 OmniMechs & 2 OmniFighters]
Nova Cat [3 OmniMechs, 1 OmniFighter, & 2 BattleMechs]
Smoke Jaguar [5 OmniMechs & 1 OmniFighter]
Snow Raven [1 OmniMech & 3 OmniFighters]
Star Adder [3 OmniMechs, 1 OmniFighter, 1 OmniVehicle, & 1 BattleMech]
Steel Viper [4 OmniMechs, 1 OmniFighter, & 1 BattleMech]
Wolf [6 OmniMechs, 1 OmniFighter, & 1 OmniVehicle]
I do have several no binding suggestions to help any potential designers who may be interested. The topic of Conventional vs. Ultralight Vehicles is a neat idea which may see development during these Trails. Can OmniVehciles under 15 tons piloted by a single warrior change Clan Warfare forever or will heavier Combat Vehicles with a crew prevail? I for one am looking forward to some very interesting design submissions which could be revolutionary.
At the same time I would like to fill the missing gaps in the existing Clan Vehicle Force which can be seen in Technical Readout 3060. This has been a consistent theme of the Quicksilver Program and after some thought I would like to see it continue here. This VTOL will not be able to fill out any of the missing tonnage increments since my research shows six unfilled mass categories (45 tons, 55 tons, 70 tons, 80 tons, 90 tons, 95 tons). This would serve to augment existing Clan designs even though they are not modular in nature.
Another big positive for me over the entire Quicksilver Program has been hearing about the use of existing components. Existing frames, power plants (Fusion Engines), weapons, armor, and electronics all help to speed development and reduce cost. Recycling equipment goes hand in hand with existing Clan behavior so they could for example go back to SLDF designs to draw inspiration. I would think constructing an OmniVehicle is easy when compared to a Mech or Fighter but the Clans have not had a lot of practice in this area. Also the Clans normally do not use Targeting Computers (see Athena) on their vehicles.

Overview:
The Donar attack helicopter has long been the benchmark of the Clans attack
VTOL arm (such as it is). Thus it's unsurprising that Clan Blood Spirit
initially intended to build their proposed omni-VTOL around the chassis.
As they couldn't manufacture the same fusion reactor, the Blood Spirits instead
drew on their Shamash Recon Vehicle and used the slightly larger reactor from
that. This allowed slightly greater payload on the airframe and the the Spirits
took advantage of this.
The design was stalled for some time as the Blood Spirits have never been
experts in the use of omnitechnology and their only successes of late - the
Kinslayer and Stone Lion omnimechs were collaberative efforts. The Goliath
Scorpions had no interest in putting their scanty resources into an OmniVehicle
when approached but the Fire Mandrill ilChi was warmy received by Kindraa Kline
and Kindraa Payne - Kindraa Kline ultimately won the Trial of Possession to
participate in the project.
Capabilities:
Unsurprisingly the Morrigan - named for the three-aspected Celtic wargoddess,
appropriately for an omnivehicle - matches the earlier Donar for speed and
general protection although the Blood Spirits elected to reinforce the frontal
armour at the expense of the front and rear - suggesting that aggressive
tactics are preferred.
The primary configuration uses an extended range laser like the Donar but pairs
it with long range missile launchers and - radically - a targeting computer
identical to that used on the Fire Moth to provide accurate long-range fire.
Similarly focused on long range fire support, the Morrigan A removes the laser
and triples the size of the missile launchers. Prudent co-ordination by the
technicans in the back-seats can allow the Blood Spirit warriors acting as
pilot/gunner to even fly nap of the earth and hit targets from behind cover
although this is reserved for situations where Zellbrigen has been discarded.
Needing the extra frontal armour, the Morrigan B presses in for close attacks
with several Streak SRM launchers. This configuration is especially effective
for engaging other VTOLs.
Much less popular with warriors is the electronics-heavy C-configuration - the
primary reason that the Morrigan needs a back-seat technican to control this
part of the payload while the warrior has access only to a moderate armament of
two medium lasers and a missile launcher.
The final configuration is the Morrigan D, a dedicated transport capable of
carrying an Elemental point internally in addition to using the omni-technology
handles for exterior riding. A full Star of Morrigans can thus carry four Stars
of Elementals although they're also used to transport conventional Infantry
Points quite often, or to replace the larger Anhur as an executive transport
for senior clan personnel. A number of pulse lasers are fitted to the Morrigan
in this configuration, to clear infantry from around a Landing Zone.

Overview
When the ilKhan announced Phase III of Project Quicksilver, it was met with a wide range of emotions amongst the various Clans. Some, more traditional and conservative Clans, reacted with bitter anger and promises of Trial after Trial to kill the concept. Others were neutral, but some were enthusiastic over the possibilities that presented themselves.
Khan Tyler of Clan Ice Hellion in particular wanted desperately to add a new OmniVehicle to his Touman. The Hellion Flurry concept was proving itself as a viable option and he wanted to give his Warriors (second-line though they may be) a flexible and capable design worthy of the Hellions.
With the opening competition for an Attack VTOL/Gunship, Tyler saw his opportunity. He directed his Scientists to turn their efforts towards the creation of an Omni-VTOL that could serve the Hellions well.
Troubles immediately arose. The Hellions had no experience in designing such a vehicle and the first weeks of computer modeling and simulations resulted in abject failures. Frustrated, Tyler turned to the historians of the Clans (Clan Goliath Scorpion) for assistance.
Although the Scorpions were not interested in contributing to Phase III, Tyler offered to take upon the Hellions a portion of the Scorpion debt to the Diamond Sharks in exchange for a working base concept which his Scientists could then put into production.
It was an offer that Khan Suvorov simply could not refuse.
Opening their databases, the Scorpions studied every known VTOL design of the Star League, the Terran Hegemony, the five Great Houses, the minor Houses of the Periphery, and even the ancient helicopters of the 20th and 21st Century used by the Terran Alliance.
After much internal debate, the Scorpions presented Khan Tyler with their selection: an Omni-VTOL based upon the SLDF Ripper, although 50% heavier in tonnage.
Still rather small at just 15-tons, the Scorpions noted that this vehicle would require just a single Warrior as crew . . . a feature which greatly appealed to Khan Tyler and his Hellion Warriors. The new design would use the Omni 70 Fusion Engine of the original SLDF model; while not quite as speedy as the original, it was faster than any other existing Clan VTOL, with a cruise speed of 118.8 kilometers per hour and a flank speed of 183.6 kph, which once again met the expectations of the Hellion Warriors.
Armor remained at a mere two tons, but this was sufficient to provide enough protection on the sides and rear to resist a strike from a Clan Medium Laser. Meanwhile, the nose featured enough plating to stop a direct hit from a Gauss Rifle or a Clan ER PPC. The rotors remained vulnerable, but this was a problem with all VTOL designs.
The elimination of the troop bay and increase in tonnage also allowed for the inclusion of six tons of pod-space for weapons and equipment--fully 40% of the vehicle's tonnage!
Code-named Apollo (after the Greek God who included in his lengthy portfolio the title of God of Archery), the design was accepted by the Hellions . . . who were then forced by reality to come to the realization that they did not produce any of the components (not the frame, not the engine, not the electronics) that the vehicle required.
In desperation, Khan Tyler turned to Khan Fletcher of Clan Hell's Horses. The Herd had long used the SLDF Ripper, even after the adoption of the Donar and Anhur VTOLs. Indeed, this venerable design (albeit unarmed) remained in limited production for the Horse civilian castes where it serves as a flying ambulance and fast courier.
Intrigued by the proposal, Khan Fletcher demanded the right to produce the design herself; in return, she would provide the electronics from the Donar as well as a supply of the Type II 70 Fusion engines that the Hellions needed.
Tyler was dismayed by this demand, especially when he realized that if the Apollo was successful, the Horses would put it in full production at their Kirin Armory Plant 4 . . . capable of producing more than three times the annual production of the largest Hellion plant that Tyler had considered converting. Even so, the Hellion Khan knew that his Touman needed the design, so made Fletcher a counter-offer.
The Horses would submit the design and have full and exclusive production rights. However, the Hellions would have the right to purchase the first 15% of each annual production at cost in perpetuity. And would receive full credit as the architects of the design (the Scorpion involvement was not mentioned by Tyler) in the event that the Apollo was successful in winning the competition.
An amused Khan Fletcher agreed, and the Apollo was born.

Capabilities
The Scorpion design for the new Apollo featured the same single-pilot/gunner cockpit of the SLDF Ripper, the same 70-rate Standard Fusion Engine, and the same main/tail rotor assembly. The troop bay was eliminated and the frame lengthened, with space beneath the cockpit left open for the inclusion of up to six tons of weapons, munitions, and equipment.
Upon receiving the schematics from the Hellions, Horse Scientists were worried that the design might be too nose-heavy; however, computer simulations showed that by altering the location of the engine and the fuel tanks (moving the engine and rotors almost a meter to the rear) would correct this potential problem and the chassis was modified before the first unit had begun assembly.
Rather than re-use the ancient SLDF communications and targeting systems, the Horses instead fitted the Apollo with the Unit 2J "Boxer" comm array and the HT9 TTS targeting and tracking system, both acquired from the local Donar assembly line.
Likewise, the Horses simply redirected ferro-fibrous armor plating (Compound A2F) from the same production facility, reducing the overall bulk of the Apollo even further by using the modern Clan armor instead of first-generation SLDF ferro-fibrous.
Already in limited production for civilian use, the Type II 70 Fusion engine was exactly the same as that used by the SLDF Ripper. Early simulations and the first flight tests showed that the computer modeling was indeed accurate and the Apollo proved to be faster than the Fire Moth OmniMech (without the OmniMech activating MASC, that is).
Maneuverability and agility was actually improved by the lengthened fuselage and the addition of two 'snub' wings on the right and left sides. Intended for carrying external stores (such as single-shot rocket pods), the Apollo was rather limited in how much additional weaponry the frame could bear. However, these 'winglets' gave Horse Scientists ample space to include hand-holds, mag-locks, and power connectors for Elemental Warriors to ride outside the chassis . . . two per side. A fifth (rather precarious) such perch was included at the rear, just beneath the tail rotor. Due to the danger inherent to this location, it is usually the Point Commander who rides there.
Six tons are available for weapons, sensors, and munitions bins within the forward (indeed, only) Omni-weapons bay.
Configurations
The Apollo Prime is armed with a Large Pulse Laser. Accurate, hard-hitting, and with a good range, this weapon allows even the Second-line Warriors of a Flurry to give a good accounting of themselves.
Configuration A replaces the Large Pulse Laser with a longer-ranged ER Large Laser and two additional hit sinks. Less accurate, the Apollo A is generally assigned only to veteran or elite Warriors who are capable of consistently hitting their targets at even the most extreme range.
Configuration B is armed with four LRM-5 missile racks, supplied by two tons of ammunition (48 total missile salvos; for a total of 12 quad salvos). Although capable (potentially) of inflicting twice the damage of either the Prime or A Configurations, the Apollo B's damage tends to spread and is not concentrated in a single area.
Configuration C sacrifices range for increased sensor resolution and ECM coverage. Equipment consists of an Active Probe, an ECM Suite, and a TAG system for designated targets for artillery and bomb strikes. Weaponry consists of just two ER Medium Lasers; however, these lasers are tied into a one-ton Targeting Computer for maximum accuracy.
Finally, the Apollo D is rather unusual. The sole weapon is an LB-2X autocannon with one ton of ammunition (45 bursts of cluster ammunition is specified, although slug can be used in an emergency). The extremely low damage potential detracts many Warriors from this configuration; it most be noted, however, that no other Clan (or Inner Sphere) weapon fielded to date has the reach of the LB-2X. Able to exploit a greater range than any other weapon system, the Apollo D excels at harassing an enemy from ranges greater than they can reply to . . . a fact which infuriates many Clan opponents, although not (quite) a breach of zellbrigen. Combined with the high speed and agility of the design, the Apollo D is often assigned to newly promoted Hellion Warriors to teach the Warrior the value of patience . . . a value that too few Hellions accept, but one that is vital for a lighter combat vehicle to win against a heavier foe.

Deployment
Clan Hell's Horses has produced a full Trinary of Apollo Omni-VTOLs. Retaining a Star for their own testing, they have presented the ilKhan with the second, and given the third (without charge) to the Hellions. Field testing by the Ebon Keshik, the Ice Hellions, and the Hell's Horses have revealed that this vehicle is quite deadly when an experienced Warrior is at the controls. It is, on the other hand, incredibly fragile, albeit that is somewhat offset by the relatively inexpensive nature of this combat unit.

I'm just getting this one out there and will add fluff in the next day or two, but here is the Menhit. I went for size on this one, but have not decided if it will be Ice Hellion, Hell's Horse and/or Wolf. BTW, Menhit means 'she who massacres'.

Overview:
With a need for a battlefield scout platform, Clan Hell's Horses decide to take a two-pronged approach, a ground-based vehicle project (Codename: HEPHAESTUS) and a VTOL project (Codename: MENHIT) With powerplant issues clouding the development of the Hephaestus, focus was shifted to the Anhur-based Menhit. Using the powerplant from the Corvis battlemech, the Menhit would have twenty percent increase in overall speed over its parent craft. However, it carried a half-ton less armor than the cargo craft. The design believed the increase in speed would offset the loss of armor. This left the Menhit with a total of eleven tons for weaponry and/or electronics. With the ability to reach 150kph on the battlefield, the Menhit would be one of the faster combat vehicles within the Clans. As this VTOL would require a crew of two, most believed that no Trueborn warrior would ever fly this craft if they had to share the glory with another warrior. In order to alleviate this perceived problem, the actual piloting of the craft would be left to the technician responsible for the maintenance for each individual. this left the gunnery, where the actual glory would be earned, to a trained warrior, whether Trueborn or not.
Configurations:
Prime Configuration: Unlike most Prime configuration for Omni-capable Warcraft, this appears to be rather generic and simple. A class 5 Ultra autocannon with two tons of ammunition is the main weapon. This autocannon is backed up by a pair of extended range medium lasers.
Alternate Configuration A: This configuration is intended as a deep penetration scout and attack aircraft. It features an extended range large laser with two additional heat sinks is the main weapon. The laser is backed up by a pair of four-tube SRM launchers. To aid in the scouting role, an ECM suite and a TAG unit are also carried.
Alternate Configuration B: A variation on the previous configuration it replaces the extended range large laser with a large pulse laser. A pair of five-tube LRM launchers replace the SRM launchers. All of the remaining kit remains unchanged.
Alternate Configuration C: A long-range support craft it features an Artemis IV-equipped twenty-tube LRM launcher/ The launcher is fed two tons of ammunition. As backup weapons a medium pulse laser and a small pulse laser are mounted.
Alternate Configuration D: This configuration is a short-range version of the previous configuration. A pair of six-tube Streak SRM launchers replace the LRMl launcher. Secondary weapons include a pair each of extended range medium lasers and machineguns.
Alternate Configuration E: The final version of the Menhit is the true killer of the lot. It features an extended range PPC as the only weapon carried. The remaining tonnage is taken up by the addition of five additional heat sinks.

Clan Ice Hellion's Fury Campaign/Temper Tantrum after the revival trials brought a lot of territory, or at least footholds on various planets. more territory then their mid sized and definitavly light Touman could adequetly defend. breaking out every Star Leauge Defense Force cache they could, the Hellions created their irregular Flurry clusters, not attached to any given Galaxy, so as to defend thier footholds long enough to prompt a proper response.
one of the beneficiaries of this uncaching was the re-introduction of the Vector Helicopter. the VFector was a top of the line VTOL noted for it's ease of maintenance, particularly thanks to it's semi modular nature akin to the Mercury Battlemech. This was despite a dusted fan style counter rotor and a main rotor that tilted on an acutator rather then tilting the entire vtol forward for lateral thrust.
Flurry Cluster technicians were already used to modifying their vectors on the fly for any mission needed, so when the call came out for a VTOL that could act as a gunship as well as mission specific equipment, Flurry commanders were all to eager to present what to them was standard operating procedure. it only took some factory retooling, freed up from the forcibly abandoned Hellion Omnimech, to make the Vector Truly an Omnivehicle. in keeping (loosely) with Clan naming Conventions, the new Omni Vector was named Helios, after the Greek Sun God, typically depicted as a charioteer.
the Prime, A, and C Configuations are all made to match original Vector specs as closely as possible, the the increased heat from Clan ER Lasers has proven a problem. Alternate configuration D is meant to be a gunship in the truest sense. Taking inspiration from an American Empire aircraft called the "Spectre" a Large Pulse laser is mounted on the side of the helicopter, and pilots are instructed to fly in a counter clockwise circle to keep on target while maintaining maximum distance and mobility.
Configurations B and F are companion vehicles, one meant to tag opponents with NARC Pods and the other to provide long range bombardment. Clan Jade Falcon Solhma commanders have expressed interest in this paring, liking it to the Howler Battlemech so often denied to them.
Finally Configuration E is a fire support platform meant to sow havoc on the field. On approach the gunner designates targets for the targeting and tracking system. once an attack run is initiated the missiles are fired when the computer reaches it's most optimal solution. in addition to individual targets, the Gunner can also use pre designed attack patterns mean to fire missiles at pre designated coordinates regardless of whether a target is there. though scoffed at as a waste or resources, in the combined arms environment of the Inner Sphere such a weapon can prove effective against armor collumns.

Before someone gets on my ass about Helios not being strictly a War God. I should point out that Epona is not either, but instead the Patron of Horses, Donkeys, and Mules. and contrary to what Rocky and Bulwinkle cartoons (Thinking specifically Aesop and Son) taught us, Chariots were not used as personal transport.
-
Wow, four good designs. Looking like we are going to have some interesting competition here and hopefully there will be more entries to come. ;)
Odin is not exactly a God of War either but if your close enough JP no worries. I think nearly any God with some kind of martial aspect would be acceptable.

It's surprisingly hard to find suitable small fusion engines.
Fenris
Mass: 30 tons
Tech Base: Clan
Motive Type: VTOL OmniVehicle
Rules Level: Tournament Legal
Era: Clan Invasion
Tech Rating/Era Availability: E/X-X-E-A
Production Year: 3052
Cost: 1,112,500 C-Bills
Battle Value: 251
Power Plant: Clan 100 Fusion Engine
Cruise Speed: 86.4 km/h
Flanking Speed: 129.6 km/h
Armor: Airframe Pattern 2841 Ferro-Fibrous
Armament:
14.0 tons of pod space.
Manufacturer: W-5 Facility
Primary Factory: Eden
Communications System: Khan-series (Type 2)
Targeting and Tracking System: Mark 11 IHADS
Overview:
Wanting to make the most of the new categories for the Quicksilver programme
but unwilling to commit heavy resources, Clan Wolf stripped hardware out of an
Anhur transport to replace the cargo-bay with a formidable weapon-payload.
Capabilities:
The Anhur is already operating at an acceptable speed for a combat helicopter
and with its reinforced armour the Fenris is a little more survivable.
The selling point is the internal space however. The prime configuration
mirrors the Anhur, reducing cargo space to fit electronic counter-measures.
The other variants - and Wolf experimentation has produced a massive variety -
field almost every conceivable weapon-system. most popular are the use of heavy
autocannon and gauss rifles but payloads of missile launchers and even
energy-weapons have proven themselves viable.
Utility roles aren't neglected and some tests have employed electronics for
reconnaissence purposes. The Fenris L usues almost the entire tonnage available
for cargo, enabling the transport of up to three points of Elementals or
conventional infantry.
Deployment:
Clan Wolf is enthusiastically marketing the Fenris as a refit package for
existing Anhurs, something that could allow any Clan to field them in short
order.

Overview:
The Pele comes from the need of Clan Star Adder to have a quick strike
capability for its ground forces. it began development in the mid-3030s as
ground up new design. The only item that it shared with an exist war machine
was the rotor housing of the Ripper VTOL from the Star League era.
Using Leenex 60 fusions salvaged from the decomissioning of the Clan's
UrbanMechs, the Pele was not originally intended as an
Omni-capable vehicle. However, as development proceded, it was discovered that
the utility of the craft could be brought to bear as an omni-capable vehicle.
This slowed the development as the architecture had to be redone slightly.
Development came to a halt in 3048 thanks to the capture of the Outbound
Light and the subsequent invasion trials. Once the invasion began,
development returned at a higher pace than before.
The first flight of the Pele took place in February of 3050 and was a
resounding success. As trials continued, the manueverability of the VTOL proved
to be its shinging point. At a mere ten tons in weight, the Pele is as a
nimble as a hummingbird. As light craft, there is not much room for armor or
armaments. Armor was restricted to two tons of Compound VM20 ferro-fibrous
armor. This left a meager three tons for weaponry.
Variants:
With just three tons to work with, Clan Star Adder scientists were still able
to develop five configurations for the Pele;
Prime Configuration: A dedicated attack platforme, the prime is armed with a
pair of extended range medium lasers. To aid in its battlefield survival an ECM
suite is mounted to mask its approach to a target area.
Alternate Configuration A: Another attack platform, this model is a dedicated
battlefield support craft. Armament is limited to a trio of small pulse lasers
to be used against enemy vehicles and infantry as it strafes them in repatd
attack runs.
Alternate Configuration B: Armed with a medium pulse laser and a target
acquisition unit. The B model is a dedicated spotter for Arrow IV-equpped
vehicles and battlemechs.
Alternate Configuration C: A dedicated scout unit, a quartet of extended range
small lasers provide the firepower while an active probe unit tkes cre of the
scouting mission.
Alternate Configurations D and E: These two configurations are missile support
platforms. Armed with either a five-tube LRM launcher or a four-tube SRM
launcher, respectively. Each variant features an extended range medium laser as
its sole backup weapon.

Trans Cell Memorandum.

in continuing to evaluate military options, our cell has been hard at work in militarizing some of our survey vehicles. The R-77 VTOL has long been a staple of Scientist caste surveyors and has proven to be ubiquitous among various clans who need durable high speed transport, and the ability to haul minor amounts of cargo. Replacing the industrial grade armor with military is easy enough, particularly if stripped from Star League period vehicles and mechs that can not be refurbished to combat capability. the replacement of the ICE engine with a small capacity XL Fusion engine boost the speed dramatically. in a combat situation, the lack of armor protection will be a secondary concern compared to the unparalleled maneuverability afforded. the ability of the R-77 to harass forces and provide reconnaissance should be valuable, particularly if the 55T Battle Epsilon Project proves successful. currently we are experimenting with Inner Sphere C3 Systems as well, and encourage all Electronic Warfare oriented cells, particularly our Burrock ones, with researching this technology.

Wow, that is fast!
Unfortunately the XL makes it a no no here but it certainly has potential!
Hopefully I'd like to see it in a Clan unit someday.
-
Christ on a Cracker Drake.... you might as well have popped an Arrow IV on that thing too!
Alas artillery and VTOLs don't mix. Otherwise I most certainly would have. I had great fun with that before it was ruled illegal.
when was the Yellow Jacket Arrow IV ruled illegal?
I don't recall but it was very depressing.
-
I know that Tube Artillery can not be mounted on aircraft (well it can, but it can only be fired from the ground) but Arrow IV's were suppoused to be an exception, hence the Planetlifter tactical support aircraft.
likewise even though it is an "Aircraft" helicopters and WiGEs are considered combat vehicles for rules purposes, so this really does not make a lick of sense.
*Edit*
I was right, there is an entire section on airborn targeting in Tac Ops pp 180-181 and involves the Arrow IV exclusively. Further Tac Ops page 284 describes Arrow IVs as being available to Battlemechs, Industrial mechs, Combat Vehicles, Support Vehicles, Aerospace Fighters, Conventional Fighters, Small Craft, Dropships and Mobile Structures.
-
I must admit I too was completely unaware of any issues regarding the placement of Arrow IV Systems on VTOLs. Does not really seem to make sense as unless I am mistaken the Arrow IV is a large missile delivery system. Where could we get an official ruling on this issue? Cause I am inclined to go with JP's rule citation seems very solid.
Some great designs thus far, anymore on the way?
-
nah, an intentional rule breaking society design is about my upper limit.

Works for me! I always liked the idea of someone trying to counter-battery-fire against artillery that was flying.
The Fenris M with an Arrow IV system has been added to the list of configurations.
Thanks JP!

I love it when you break the rules JP!
Nice job drak. ;)

a VTOL flying at NOE is still subject to counter battery fire depending on elevation levels. a low altitude aircraft may be subject to AA Fire or interception by other aircraft. when you get something like the Yellowjacket or Hadur, you pretty much NEED an airstrike to take it out.
-
I looked up the Hadur and the Yellow Jacket both bring a new meaning to mobile artillery. BTW, the write up on BattleTechWiki for the Yellow Jacket has the Arrow IV variant with no mention of illegality.

My imagination paints the opposing artillery calculating their position by back-tracking the ballistic arcs (yes, I know missiles aren't always ballistic, tell my imagination that) and firing at the hex were the line is traced too... but the VTOLs are hovering above ground and therefore safely displaced laterally from the expected location.
-
Blast wave could asphysxiate the engine or shrapnel can devastate rotors
-
Have they ever gone 3D with the artillery splash rule? Meaning not only do the adjacent ground hexes get area of effect damage but so would the air above. Hence a VTOL hovering at Level 1 would be hit by artillery fire striking the ground adjacent.
-
again, per tac ops, Artillerty detonations effect up to 5 elevations above ground zero, which is standard VTOL Cruising altitude anyway.
-
Very good!
-
Okay folks just about seven hours left in this contest so get those entries in before midnight!
-
I will not make it on time but your contest is really interesting.

Darn, maybe next contest Ice. ;) That is it gang. Contest over. I will get the review done ASAP.
I don't know.
I had ideas but not enough time on my side.
-
Well if the first contest is any indication Phase Three of the Quicksilver Program is going to be some event. Four designers (welcome back JP) submitted seven superb entries which as masterarminas put it represented “five separate Clans (and the proto-Society), every movement profile from 8/12 to 12/18 (and 20/30!!), and pod-space from 2.5-14 tons.†In fact the only “Vehicle Clan†not to participate in the VTOL Challenge was Diamond Shark which must have had something to do with bean counting. Before I begin let me say I was impressed by every design. Except for one, which I had to disqualify for XL engineness, they all could have won. Great job gang!
N/A. R-77 (JPArbiter)
Quite possibly my favorite entry was this 11 ton proto-Society (as masterarminas termed it) Ultralight. Unfortunately its 125 XL Engine which gives it an incredible 20/30 MP is beyond the scope of this contest. It does lead me to the possibility of allowing such extravagance on these tiny vehicles which could dramatically improve their performance. Small Extra Light Engines like the 125 would not be difficult to develop per say and like the Ultralight Vehicle are very legal. The cost of the R-77 at its top end configuration is a mere 1 million C-bills, would it be worth it? Certainly is something I will have to contemplate going forward. As for the rest of your story the story of a converted high speed civilian transport is acceptable but being non canon minimum its impact. Do not get me wrong I like the idea especially if it had been applied from a canon source in production. Just not as high on it without. Surprised you did not go with Ferro Fibrous which would improve the 1.5 tons of standard armor (24 factor). While 2.5 tons of pod space is a small amount thanks to its size it really ain’t that shabby. The configurations are very nicely done especially Primary with its 5 ER Smalls which fit under the integral heat sinks and the vehicle space limitations. Great job JP, even though it is a no go for this contest you really gave me a lot to think about and gawk at. Amazing speed!!
6. Pele (Abele)
This 10 ton Star Adder design is almost totally new with the exception of its rotor housing from the SLDF’s Ripper. Of course, this could be negative but the small size of this single crew Ultralight really would mitigate those concerns. Using 60 Fusion Engines (11/17 MP) from decommissioned UrbanMechs was a neat way to power this nimble entry. Well named after the Hawaiian goddess this entry has pretty good fluff. With only 2 tons of Ferro Fibrous (38 factor) this attack craft is vulnerable and 3 tons of pod space is not that much. Again that being said she ain’t that shabby for the size but when compared to some of the big boys. You did a real nice job with the Configurations especially C which nearly matches the R-77 in firepower. I suppose you could swap in a Light Active Probe when available and another ER Small which would exceed its capabilities except in regards to speed. Still this is nimble and cheap with costs top out at 800 thousand C-bills a unit. Nice job!
5. Apollo (masterarminas)
This Ice Hellion led effort went one step too far for me in the fluff. I liked how the Goliath Scorpions were dragged into the design by their debt and recommended the 15 ton enlarged SLDF Ripper. Using the Omni 70 Fusion Engine (11/17 MP) that comes with the original is fine but how exactly are the Hell’s Horses in any better position to supply this power plant then the Hellions? I see no canon evidence of the Horses producing the Ripper and civilian production could well extend to any Clan for non military versions. I am sure the Hellions might have a few of these old helicopters available to them as well. It was just a little too much for me bringing in the Horses. The design is excellent. Love this Ultralight Vehicle piloted by a single warrior and 6 tons of pod space with 2 tons of Ferro Fibrous (38 factor) makes for a pretty awesome design! One I hope to see again with a little less Horse power. Sorry MA, if you have a canon example of the Horses maintaining Ripper production then I will reevaluate. Sadly I can not find one.
4. Morrigan (drakensis)
This Blood Spirit effort backed by Kindraa Kline who assisted with OmniTech concerns was based on the Donar Attack Helicopter (22 tons). Using the readily available 60 Fusion Engine (9/14 MP) from the Shamash Recon Vehicle is a very nice touch. Three tons of Ferro Fibrous (57 factor) mounted forward is good protection for this 2 man VTOL. With 10 tons of pod space this attack helicopter could carry an impressive arsenal into battle. I liked most of the Configurations (Primary and D being my favorites) except for C which I am concerned has too many items. However, the fluff is very solid and the name is excellent. Very high marks here drak, nice job!
3. Menhit (Abele)
This 30 ton design based on the Anhur was forwarded by the Hell’s Horses. While it is not a helicopter per say thanks to its tilt rotor design it is effective as a gunship. The fluff here enables me to comment on the 2 man crew proposal mixing warrior and non warrior in a combat vehicle. The idea of letting a tech pilot the craft works for me in regards to VTOLs cause there is really no possibility of charging attacks. I suppose since the tech pilot is at the command of the warrior such actions with other vehicles would be permissible. But it is a gray area. I would recommend the Blood Spirits be the first to try it as their techs can get a second chance to test up. Using the 160 Fusion Engine (10/15) from the Corvis is a very nice touch as it is still in production. The 2.5 tons of Ferro Fibrous (47 factor) provides solid protection and the 11 tons of pod space is impressive. Fluff is alright and I liked the name of this Nubian war goddess. Bronze for Abele!
2. Helios (JPArbiter)
Ice Hellion clearing out their caches to field Flurry units very neatly sets up this 22 ton design based on the SLDF Vector (Historical Liberation of Terra Volume 2). The 125 Fusion Engine (12/18 MP) is included with the original which was noted for it semi modularity. Real nice pick by JP, the fluff is spot on, and the name is excellent. With 6 tons of pod space and three configurations (Primary, A, and C) mirroring its predecessor this is a real nice entry. I love the other configurations too especially D and its side mounted Large Pulse Laser meant to circle unlucky opponents. With 3.5 tons of Ferro Fibrous (67 factor) it is also well protected. Great job JP, very well done. Silver medal!
1. Fenris (drakensis)
This Wolf Clan entry was almost a little too thin especially in regards to fluff but this 30 ton design based on the Anhur sells itself. A design already in production is a huge plus and with refit packages planned for existing models it fits with other Quicksilver efforts. The straight forward conversion from a standard transport to a modular gunship works even if it is not a helicopter per say. The 100 Fusion Engine (8/12 MP) was retained as is from the original Anhur. The “big†change comes from stripping out the 3 extra Heat Sinks seen on the Anhur. This frees up an additional ton of armor, 4 tons of Ferro Fibrous (76 factor), which adds to its protection and leaves 14 tons for pod space which really allowed for impressive capabilities. The possibilities ranging from an Ultra AC/20 (A), LB 20-X AC (B), Gauss Rifle (C), Arrow IV System (M), and many others are just too awesome to decline. The aptly named Fenris is the winner, congrats drak!
It is my hope the even though the larger designs fared better in this contest that proponents of Ultralights do not get discouraged. I assure you there is a place for them in this setting even if they get beat this time around. After the contests conclude in it is very likely that I will go back to them for separate development thanks to their small size and inexpensive costs. They can be extremely effective in my opinion and this opening challenge really shows that. Thanks again to everyone involved and we will be moving onto our second vehicle contest shortly.
-
A tightly fought category. Well done to everyone.
-
Sorry MA, if you have a canon example of the Horses maintaining Ripper production then I will reevaluate. Sadly I can not find one.
There isn't one. But it makes sense that the Clans jwould have unarmed vehicles for their civilian population, including 'copters like the Ripper for medical evacuations and VIP transports, as well as fast couriers. Unfortunately, with the exception of civilian model unarmed Anhurs, such a thing is not mentioned (or rather, they are not officially given stats) by canon.
Shrug. The low cost of the 10-ton Ripper, and the cargo bay, make it perfect for some Clan (or Clans) to retain in production for just that purpose. But there is nothing in canon to indicate that they do.
Congrats, Drakensis.

The Cobra?
-
the two and a half tons of pod space was EXACTLY the size needed to put the R-77 with a NOVA eventually. Also keep in mind the society has existed since the fall of Clan Wolverine, in fact was STARTED by absorbed Wolverine scientists (Betrayal of Ideals).
anyway congratulations to Drake on his win.

It does make sense for the Clans to have a civilian Ripper. I have no problems with that. What I did not like was the need projected which bought the Horses in. Ice Hellion could have been producing the Ripper just as easy as Hell's Horses in my opinion. Heck with their Flurry units the Hellions could have starting rearming them. If there had been some bit of fiction saying only the Horses built it for x then fine. It was just one twist to many for me. Sorry MA.
Here's a 25-tonner I was working on, but left it out due to a lack of podspace for it size.
Interesting Abele. The 12/18 MP was already occupied even though the 25 ton category was not. The SLDF's old Nightshade could have served as the basis if you had wished. The 160 Fusion Engine could have been obtained from either the Snow Fox (Ice Hellion) or the Corvis (Hell's Horses) which are both in production. With 3.5 tons of Ferro Fibrous (67 factor) it would have been one of the better protected gunship entries. The 6 tons of pod space is pretty good and enables your first two configurations mounting a single long range energy weapon. Prime has a single ER Large and Alternate A has a Large Pulse Laser. Both are nasty long range threats to any target. Alternate B goes away from a single large energy weapon to mount a closer fighting harder hitting arsenal. With 2 ER Mediums and a Streak SRM-6 it can do almost 2.5 times more damage than the first two configurations. It had potential but likely would not have won. The fluff would have been important in ultimately deciding where it finished but we will never know.
the two and a half tons of pod space was EXACTLY the size needed to put the R-77 with a NOVA eventually. Also keep in mind the society has existed since the fall of Clan Wolverine, in fact was STARTED by absorbed Wolverine scientists (Betrayal of Ideals).
Really!? Color me surprised. I always thought that the Society was a Coyote creation. Sort of their bipolar split personality coming out with the foundations laid during the Versailles Pact. Traditionalist Warriors going one way and Liberal Scientists going the other. I would love to talk with you more about the Society JP cause I have plans for them in Clarion Call.

Our first hint at The Society was in the Novel Falcon Guard when Peri was recruited by Khan Pryde for The Watch and found the Aiden Pryde clone Sibko. Later Blaine Pardoe in Betrayal of ideals heavily hinted that the destined to be absorbed Wolverine Scientists would work with their colleagues among the clans to undermine Nicholas Kerensky's ideals, the biggest blow was the contamination of several generations of Ghost Bear Warriors with Wolverine Genes (and possibly other clans).
long and short, The Society heavily pre-existed the Wars of Reaving and were created by a Caste rather then a Clan. that the Coyotoe's were so tied to the Society has more to do witht he Coyote's cooperation with the Scientist caste, which was no more unusual then the Sharks Merchant ties.

I thought all lower casteman of the Not Named Clan were sterilized to prevent the treachery from spreading?

you can keep people from breeding, but not from spreading ideas

True dat! I guess the Wolverine Scientists were quite successful given the level of advancement by their Clan compared to others. I could see an Operation Paper Clip type thing undertaken by the Clans hoping for some type of advantage. It is interesting that Circe was one of the strongholds of the Society and that was a Wolverine holding if I am not mistaken.
