Title: Quicksilver Program #31: Clan Hover Hellraiser

For our second Clan OmniVehicle of the Quicksilver Program I wanted to go with a role described by some (masterarminas) as a Hellraiser. This fast mover much like a scout/ recon vehicle is built for combat as a flanker and harasser. You know get around the enemy and make them crazy. This rapid mover is ideally hovercraft who’s inherent speed, light to moderate armor, and solid weaponry can fill this role. Please no Extra Light (XL) Engines this time around as the Clans generally do not equip Vehicles with them. Again this Hover Vehicle is being built just after the Truce of Tukayyid (3052) on the Clan Homeworlds and must adhere to Clan Tech Level 2 rules of the time.

With their victory in the first VTOL contest Clan Wolf is out as a possible manufacturer but they remain interested in the creation of this new Armored Corps. Along with their Coyote allies (driven in large part by their enthusiastic Scientists) and two Fire Mandrill Kindraa (Payne and Kline) they will actively assist the remaining “Vehicle Clans”. Of the remaining five who will win? Maybe it will be Hell’s Horses with a similar design to the canon Hephaestus or the Ice Hellions with their focus on speed in combat or the military minded Star Adders which can develop a successful design based on their studies of Wolcott?? Don’t forget about Diamond Shark and Blood Spirit either.

Still fuming about this whole Vehicle non sense are the Burrocks, Jade Falcons, and Smoke Jaguars. Their hatred for this whole concept could manifest itself during the design process. These three Clans will go out of their way to wreck this phase if at all possible. The rest do not want anything to do with OmniVehicles and could careless about most events here. At best they will observe or have some kind of peripheral involvement but apathy is still the rule of the day here. Oh and don’t forget that all entries must follow established Naming Conventions for Clan Vehicles meaning Gods of War should be your guide.

Remember my non binding suggestions to help any potential designers who are interested. The Ultralight Vehicle, 15 tons or lighter piloted by a single warrior, is an idea gaining traction. Such a Hover OmniTank could be very feasible in this hell raiser role. I hope to see at least one such challenger in these Trails. At the same time I would like to fill the missing gaps in the existing Clan Vehicle Force which can be seen in Technical Readout 3060. This has been a consistent theme of the Quicksilver Program I would like to see it continue here. One of the unfilled mass categories (45 tons) is available for this design. This would serve to augment existing Clan designs even though they are not modular in nature.

Though the Shamash has been a roaring success for the Blood Spirits, they felt the needed to create a companion vehicle to provide heavier longer ranged support and escort for the nimble hovercraft.  Looking to the J Edgar, a ubiquitous light hover tank from the SLDF, the Spirits went to work.  the engine was downgraded due to a lack of the available components.  120 rated fusion engines however were avaliable on a wide variety of mechs and vehicles that had been cached away,Typically the Spirits stripped the Thorn and Flea mechs, given they were undervalued (and many Fleas were sent off with Wolf's Dragoons half a century prior) by most clans. 

The Armor was also downgraded so as to allow the new vehicle to carry payloads consisting of the Spirits most common weaponry. Despite the expense, Ferro Fibrous was used on the new vehicle, using the same molds as it's cousin, creating an odd visual hybrid of the Shamash and J Edgar. Technical assistance was provided from the fire Mandrills for the Reconnaissance enabled C Configuration, in exchange for vehicle schematics.  With their new vehicle designed they named it the Tanit, after the Patron Goddess of Carthage, a symbol of the Spirits resolve in the face of adversity.

Despite the vehicle being built from the ground up, the Spirts were experts in placing the components they had in any platform imaginable, with parts borrowed from the Shamash and engines ripped from mechs and vehicles no one would miss, nearly a binary were ready to present for technical demonstration.

Overview

Fresh from winning the VTOL Gunship category of the ilKhan's Project Quicksilver with their Fenris, Clan Wolf made the decision not to participate in any further OmniVehicle projects.  The Clan chose instead to focus on improving and streamlining production of their current OmniMechs, OmniFighters, and their new OmniVehicle rather than devoting additional resources for new (and untested designs).

But that decision (made by a vote of all Blood-named Warriors of the Clan rather than the Wolf leaders) left Natasha Kerensky in a quandary. 

More than forty years of experience in the Inner Sphere style of warfare had taught her valuable lessons about the necessity and usefulness of having a wide array of vehicles to support 'Mechs and infantry . . . and she was determined to force the Clans to address this problem, even if it meant fighting Trials herself and dragging her fellow Warriors kicking and screaming forward.

Chief among the designs that the Wolf Khan wanted to see converted by the Clans was the ancient J Edgar light hover tank.  Just 25-tons in mass, this two-man hovertank was fast-moving, relatively well-protected, and featured a decent weapons array (for such a light IS vehicle, that is).  Natasha was convinced that a full Clan rework of the design would do better . . . and with the weapons concentrated in the turret in the original design, this made the J Edgar a perfect candidate for conversion to an OmniVehicle.

Her efforts were cut short, however, when the ilKhan ruled against her request for a Trial to overturn the decision of Wolf Warriors; Ulric Kerensky was concerned that such an action would exacerbate the Crusader/Warden split within the Clan; in private talks, he convinced Natasha to forgo the Trial.

She did, but refusing to let the project drop, she approached Khan Cassius N'Buta of the Star Adders.  Although a Clan of Crusaders, and quite conservative in many areas, the Adders were one of the few Clans that held appreciation for the role that vehicles could play on the battlefield. 

The idea intrigued N'Buta . . . a fast-moving, hard-hitting light vehicle manned by a civilian driver and a single Warrior (as a combination of vehicle commander and gunner), yet a design that remained relatively inexpensive to produce and maintain.  However, he noted the rarity of this design and the lack of a facility to produce the required 145-rate Standard Fusion engines.  The armor, communications system, and tracking & targeting arrays, he agreed that these systems could all be pulled from existing Asshur vehicle production lines on Sheridan.

But the engines?  The vehicle frames?  These were not common in the Clan Homeworlds.

Natasha smiled at Cassius.  "You do remember that the SLDF used the J Edgar in vast numbers, quiaff?"

The Star Adder Khan frowned.  "No . . . I was not aware of that.  Was the design not predominately used by the Periphery?"

"It was produced by Alphard Trading Company . . . which had many factories in the Periphery," Natasha answered.  "But ATC was originally a Free Worlds League corporation and when the J Edgar was introduced in 2722, the SLDF signed contracts to acquire a large number of examples.  Primarily to . . .," and she smiled again, "sooth the Captain-General's feelings over the lack of FWL designs within the Regular Army.  Oh, these little tanks never got much glory within the SLDF, but they served in independent Regiments, as well as the Armored Brigades attached to Infantry and BattleMech Divisions . . . and within the handful of Armored Divisions that the SLDF retained."

N'Buta slowly nodded.  "Even so, how many survive to this day?  I cannot account for any that I have seen, or heard, used in Clan Toumans?"

The Wolf laughed.  "That is because their current owner is a band of spiteful idiots, Cassius!  Exactly one Armored Division survived the Amaris Coup and the Liberation of Terra to accompany the SLDF on the Exodus:  the 238th Armored Division.  Which is one of the units that General Kerensky disbanded when he down-sized the SLDF after arriving in the Pentagon."

"That unit seems familiar; I feel as if I should know it," Cassius muttered.

"It was the unit in which the parents of both Osis blood-lines served," Natasha answered.

"Jaguars," the Adder snarled.

"The Jaguars.  Before General Kerensky's death, the few tank commanders retained in the SLDF wanted modern Hegemony designs . . . so the existing J Edgars were reassigned to the 238th as the entire division was mothballed within a Castle Brian.  The titular commander of the 238th remained loyal to Nicholas Kerensky and he locked down the cache before he joined our Exodus to Strana Mechty."  Natasha shrugged.  "The Warlords that were left behind fighting the Pentagon Civil War weren't about to waste their time breaking into the mountain to get a bunch of light-weight Free World hover-tanks!  At least not at first, and then after the initial years of the conflict, they no longer had the resources to excavate the cache.  Three full brigades, consisting in large part of J Edgars, just sat there, until our ancestors launched Klondike and retook the Pentagon."

"Three brigades?" croaked Cassius.

"More than six hundred of these light fast hover-tanks, my friend," Natasha answered.  "Plenty of existing frames and engines . . . that might need a bit of work to refurbish.  After we get the Jaguars to hand them over, that is.  They have owned that particular Brian Cache since Klondike."

"The Jaguars are not going to just give us those vehicles, Natasha," Cassius warned.  "They are against this entire project."

And Natasha Kerensky laughed again.  "In that case, we will have to challenge them to a Trial and beat their Crusader asses into bloody pulp then . . . won't we?"


The Trial

Needless to say, the Jaguar leadership was incensed by the sheer audacity of Khans Kerensky and N'Buta when they received the call for a Trial of Possession of the 238th Brian Cache on Eden.  Despite their anger, saKhan Howell managed to convince Khan Osis that given the current limitations of their Touman to instead avoid the Trial altogether.

Appealing to the ilKhan, the Jaguars insisted that the proposed Trail broke with the ilKhan Shower's ruling that the Homeworld Clans could not assault the holdings of the Invading Clans.  Khan Osis demanded that ilKhan Kerensky censure Khan N'Buta and declare the Trial illegal.

They were quite shocked (and infuriated even further) when the ilKhan refused their request.  Citing that it was Khan Natasha Kerensky of Clan Wolf who had issued the challenge, and that she was a member of an Invading Clan, the ilKhan found that there was no prohibition upon Invading Clans attacking one another either in the Homeworlds or the Occupation Zones.  However, he did confirm that neither Khan N'Buta nor the Star Adders could issue such a challenge . . . but that Khan Kerensky of Clan Wolf was free to do so.

Using a command circuit assembled for the purpose of reinforcing the Wolf Occupation Zone, Khan Kerensky travelled back to the Homeworlds and landed on Eden . . . where she personally issued a challenge to the 10th Jaguar Regulars for possession of Brian Cache 238. 

A second-line unit featuring a mix of OmniMechs and standard BattleMechs, the 10th Regulars were in the process of preparing for departure to the Jaguar Occupation Zone when Kerensky landed.  Those preperations were immediately halted and Star Colonel Isiash Moon declared that the Jaguars would defend "the heritage of the 238th Armored Division with every Warrior under his command".

Whether he believed that he needed an entire Cluster to defeat one Warrior, or if he felt that Khan Kerensky would back down in the face of such odds is an open question . . . for Star Colonel Moon died during the subsequent battle.

Although she had landed alone, Khan Kerensky laughed at the Jaguar response and answered, "Bargained well and done!"

That was when the 417th Adder Sentinels landed.  Also a second-line unit, the assault-weight 417th was a veteran formation that the Adders had used as part of their Opposition Force (Kappa Galaxy).  Exquisitely trained and drilled, and honed through hundreds of combats against fellow Adder units, the 417th reported to Khan Kerensky as the elements of a 'contract bid', placing itself (temporarily) under the aegis of the Wolf Touman and her direct command.

Moon howled in protest, sending HPG transmissions to the ilKhan as well as Khan Osis . . . who personally travelled via command circuit to Tamar demanding (once again) that the ilKhan take action to stop this breach of Clan law!

Ulric Kerensky denied the request, as he noted that the Adders were not issuing the challenge . . . and that contract bids, while uncommon, were allowed under Clan law.

The 10th Regulars fought bravely and with great zeal in the subsequent battle, but the firepower and experience of 417th was simply too much . . . not to mention the direct leadership and expertise of Khan Kerensky.  While the battle raged for six days in the jungles of Eden surrounding Brian Cache 238, the end was never truly in doubt.

On the sixth day of the battle, Star Captain Dane (an Warrior lacking a Blood-name, but the senior surviving Jaguar) asked for, and received, hegira.  Less than eight Stars of Jaguar Warriors accompanied him back to the Jaguar port. 

The 417th did not survive unscathed, however.  Close to forty percent of the formation's Warriors were either dead or critically injured; but the Brian Cache (with the stockpile of J Edgars within) was now owned by Khan Kerensky.

She then presented Brian Cache 238 to Khan N'Buta, in exchange for the right of Clan Wolf to purchase (at a signficant discount) the new OmniVehicles that they would create based on the J Edgars mothballed inside.  She did insist upon one last matter before the transaction was concluded, however.

Having learned that Clan Hell's Horses under the direction of Khan Fletcher (a man whom Natasha despised) were designing a new light tracked Omni-tank, Khan Kerensky insisted that Khan N'Buta file their submission immediately . . . using the name Nike.  The name that her sources told her was the project identifier for the new Clan Hell's Horses' vehicle.

"After all," she added, batting her eyelids at the Adder, "The goddess of Winged Victory is better associated with our fast light hover than a ground-crawling tread tank, quiaff?"

Laughing, Khan N'Buta agreed.

In the end, the Adders recovered some six hundred and seventeen J Edgars from the Brian Cache, along with nearly three hundred other SLDF and Inner Sphere vehicles dating back to the SLDF of old.  More than enough to provide the engines and frame for their new Nike design.

And in the process, both Khan Kerensky and Clan Star Adder earned the utter enimity and hatred of the Jaguars . . . who vowed to exact their revenge for this series of insults piled upon insults.


Capabilities and Configurations

Massing 25-tons, the Nike is heavily based upon the J Edgar light hover-tank of old.  The two share the same frame (refurbished and restored to like-new condition) as well as the same 145-rate Standard Fusion engine.  Outfitted for a two-man crew, the driver (typically a civilian Technician caste) sits in an isolated cockpit on the left-hand side of the chassis, while the turret (containing the Warrior who commands the vehicle and operates the weaponry) is placed on the right-hand side.  Although this asymmetric configuration is unusual, the Nike's control computers ensure that the hover-tank has a smooth ride despite the tonnage imbalance.

Armor has been upgraded to ferro-fibrous plating (derived from the current Asshur production line on Sheridan) and is slightly less thick than the original J Edgar design (4.5 tons of Compound JX3 versus 6.0 tons of standard plating).  This was deemed as adequate, however, as the armor distribution allows the Nike to resist a single Class 20 autocannon burst on the front, sides, and turret . . . although the rear is only able to absorb a single Inner Sphere Medium Pulse Laser strike before suffering penetration.

However, this did allow the Adder engineers to retain the original engine which allows for a cruise speed of 118.8 kilometers per hour and a flank speed of 183.6 kph.  And it provided a full six tons of pod-space within the newly converted turret (massing a half-ton in and of itself).  The communications system and tracking & targeting array were also 'borrowed' from the Asshur production line, ensuring that the Adders could produce this vehicle 'in-house' without any difficulties.

Faster than a Fire Moth (except when that OmniMech uses sprint mode), better protected, able to carry and deploy five Elementals as easily as the OmniMech, and possessing just a half-ton less pod-space, the Nike promises to make an extraordinary contribution to the Star Adder Touman (along with other Clans who will happily purchase this inexpensive little vehicle).  Costing less than half the price of the aforementioned Fire Moth, the Nike is easily affordable by even the poorest Clan.

The Nike Prime is armed with a single ER Large Laser mounted in the turret, with two additional heat sinks to deal with the heat production.  Possessing an excellent reach, this weapon allows the lightly-armored Nike to utilize its speed to the highest extent, staying at range and sparring from a distance few other weapons can respond.

Configuration A is very similar, but sacrifices some range for greater accuracy.  A Large Pulse Laser is the sole weapon in this version.

Configuration B has proven somewhat unpopular, mainly due to the lack of onboard offensive munitions.  The main gun is an LRM-10 with a ton of ammunition (12 salvoes), supported by an ER Medium Laser for close-range combat.  An Anti-Missile System has also been fitted (with a ton of ammunition as well) to protect against hostile missile strikes.  However, the lack of firepower on this design (concentrated firepower) has been an issue.

Configuration C features twin ER Medium Lasers supported by a Streak SRM-6 launcher (and a ton of ammunition).  Forgoing any effort to fight at the longest ranges, the Nike C is able to utilize its high speed to close rapidly and savage hostile forces with missile and laser fire from behind.

Configuration D likewise has twin ER Medium Lasers, but these are tied into a Targeting Computer for increased accuracy.  This version also carries an ECM Suite, an Active Probe, and a TAG target-designation system making it a superb light recon tank and artillery forward observer.

Configuration E has twin Medium Pulse Lasers and an Active Probe, along with two Machine-Guns for anti-personnel work (with a half-ton of ammunition). 

And finally, the Nike F is intended for point-blank range combat.  The main gun is an ER Medium Laser, supported by four ER Small Lasers and the three additional heat sinks required to deal with the heat produced.  Capable of inflicting more damage than any other Nike configuration, the F has to get into knife-fighting range and stay there . . . increasing the risk to the crew dramatically.  A fact which appeals to many Clan Warriors.

Overview:

Clan Diamond Shark looking for an opportuinity to tap into the combat vehicle
market, the merchant and scientists seized on the opportunity proided by the
IlKhan's expansion of the Quicksilver challenge to include vehicles. After obtain-
ing a substantial enclave on Itabiana in Clan Nova Cat's Occupation Zone in the
Inner Sphere, the merchants went to work and began as much salvage from the
Nova Cats and Smoke Jaguar as those two clans would allow. Amongst these
acquisitions were the hulks of captured and damaged Panther battlemechs.
While the Mechs were inferior even by secondline standards, there were salvage-
able bits and pieces. Most importantly were the Series140 standard fusion engines.
These engines would fit nicely into the hull of a hovercraft that's been under develop-
ment for the better part of the last decade.

Based on plans for the Hipparch which were obtained from Clan Goliath
Scorpion at the turn of the century, the Camulus shares the same basic
hull and maneuverability as the Hipparch, but with greater offensive
capability at the expense of some armor protection. While the
Camulusdoes not have the greatest speed, even for a hovercraft, it does
come with ten tons of poddable weapons space. The forward hull has a small  pod
bay, while the turret is large enough to carry large missile launcher and
mid-range ballistic and energy weapons.

To protect the mythos of the warrior, the technician responsible for the care of the
vehicle is also the driver. This leaves the command of the vehicle and its weapons
under the command of the warrior, whether he be trueborn or freeborn.


Configurations:

Prime: This a general weapons platform carrying a broad range of
weapons. Twin medium pulse lasers and ten-tube long-range missile launcher are
mounted in the turret. Two tons of ammunition feed the launcher. The forward
hull pod bay is filled with a pair of machineguns with a half-tin of
ammunition.

A: A long-range attack platform, this configuration features an extended
range large laser matched with a pair of five-tube long-range missile
launchers. The twin machineguns carry over from the Prime configuration.

B: The B configuration is a strike platform fitted with a pair of
extended range medium lasers paired with a six-tube Streak short-range missile
launcher. The pod in the hull is fitted with an extended range small laser and
a vehicular flamer.

C: Fitted with a turret-mounted Class 5 Ultra autocannon with an extended
range medium laser, the C configuration is the only version with a large
ballistic weapon. The turret weapons are backed up by a pair of hull-mounted
extended range small lasers.

D: A long-range support platform, an Artemis IV-equipped
twenty-tube long-range missile launcher. Two tons of ammunition feed the
launcher. A pair of small pulse lasers are mounted in the hull to provide
minimal back up to the missile launcher.

E: With the addition of an ECM suite, the final configuration is deigned
to fill the role of the deep penetration vehicle. A large pulse laser is mounted
in the turret with the ECM suite. A four-tube Streak short-range missile
launcher occupies the pod bay in the forward hull.

Just for the record, since we are much more limited in the use of names, we will NOT be penalized IF we re use a non winning name in a future project?  (I had Camulus pre pegged as a heavy tracked vehicle, and fear what happens to a bunch of us who watched Stargate SG-1)

Actually that was never a rule per say of these contests. Many designers have just always followed that standard on their own. In practice it does help as failed entries are easier to remember if their name is used only once.

I have no problem saying that you will not be penalized if you re use a NON WINNING name in the future. Problem is if the Camulus wins here your in a pickle.  ;)

Overview:
Clan Hells Horse were already contemplating the need for an escort to their
Svantovit Infantry Fighting Vehicle. The Blood Spirits, the other major users,
could field their Shamash Recon vehicles in the role, but the larger hover
vehicles of the Hells Horses couldn't quite keep up the pace demanded by the
role.

The funding for new Quicksilver projects was quickly tapped into for this and
designers took an Odin Scout tank, rebuilding the drive train entirely to turn
the scout tank into a hover vehicle.


Capabilities:
As predicted by computer modelling, the newly named Tyr can keep pace with the
Svantovit despite the size of the new drive demanding a 35% bloat of the
vehicle's total mass. This allowed the armour to be more than doubled while
retaining enough pod-space for the Odin's original equipment.

The Prime Configuration, sometimes referred to as the Odin configuration,
sports a Beagle Active Probe and a forward firing small laser, The turret
carries a pair of medium pulse lasers and a Streak Missile Launcher. Existing
Odin crews can transition to this without difficulty.

The Tyr A resembles the Prime, with turreted lasers and short-range missiles,
but swaps to extended range lasers and standard SRMs in order to free space for
the driver to have a forward-mounted LRM launcher.

With the current trend towards placing a warrior in charge of weapons and
leaving driving to a technican (the so-called 'chariot' system) among other
clans, the Hells Horses equipped the Tyr B and Tyr C with all weapons in the
turret and only supporting systems controlled by the driver in the hull.

The Tyr B uses a pair of dissimilar medium lasers and an SRM launcher to attack
targets while the hull space is occupied by sophisticated electronics to cut
through the Inner Sphere's dezgra stealth tactics.

In C configuration long range combat is the preference and the only armament is
an artemis-equipped LRM launcher in the turret. Three tons of ammunition cater
to longer engagements.

I am still looking for Ultralights and that 45 ton platform even if the engine is tough to do.

Overview:
The Ice Hellions wanted a fast, medium-weight omnivehicle to deliver Elemental
Points and the Morrigu was what their scientists provided. The initial
intention was to develop a a suitable engine for a top speed of around 150kph.
The need to meet the schedule of the Quicksilver Program led to a dictate from
the Clan Council to proceed with an existing engine. The only engine models
suitable were the Magna 260 from the Ironsides and Vox 215 from the slightly
heavier Bandit hovertank. Although there were suggestions that the more
powerful engine would be desirable, the ultimate decison was made that the
larger engine would cut severely into pod-space.


Capabilities:
The Morrigu is - unsurprisingly for an Ice Hellion design - a hair faster than
the Bandit, explaining why it's being proposed despite the otherwise similar
design. It's also much more fragile with less than a third of the protection.
The design has a fixed turret that typically mounts all fitted weapons.

The primary Morrigu configuration has a bay for two Elemental points, which can
enable the deployment of up to three if some ride externally. As a result a
single Morrigu can deploy a full Elemental Point. In this configuration a pair
of lasers are mounted in the turret.

With almost a third of the payload devoted to pod-space, the Morrigu can mount
an extensive variety of equipment - rather than name configurations with codes
the documentation so far simply specifies approximately what each includes -
gauss rifles, LRMs, SRMs and even artillery are options but some include a
large energy weapon and secondary weapons.


Battle History:
Survivability of the Morrigu is largely a matter of keeping the armour from
taking hits. For this reason successful crews tend to skew towards long range
weapons. During live weapon testing one successful configuration used a pair of
light LB-X autocannon to cripple half a Star of light tanks from the OPFOR
without venturing within range of their weapons.

Nice 45 tonner drak, now I am looking for an Ultralight or two.  ;)

Ice, I would post up your design idea. Then ease into some fluff. Capabilities are easy enough. Your just telling us what your machine can do and since these are OmniVehicle it usually is a small paragraph for each Configuration. What weapons it has and what is the intended role.

Deployment can be an easy add too as you know who is building it and the six Vehicle Clans (Hell's Horses and Blood Spirit being the biggest two users, Ice Hellion, Star Adder, and Wolf are kind of exploring a larger role, with Diamond Shark being a seller who is curious about Vehicle usage) who will be using. Then you can spice that up with engagements versus the anti-Vehicle Clans (Burrock, Jade Falcon, & Smoke Jaguar) who are looking to annihilate your products.

Overview can be the most difficult. Your really coming up with why this was built, by whom, its intended role which can cover a wider area of fiction.

Don't be shy. Ask for help. It is not against the rules. ;)

Overview:
Named for the 'lord of the flies' the Baalzebub is a Star Adder development.
While the most prominent warriors are the 'battlefield' sub-castes, they also
include Clan police and several other roles. In a secondary role, these and
Solahma warriors could potentially be mobilized at very low cost in this
high-speed platform.


Capabilities:
The Baalzebub uses the same fusion engine as a Shamash but despite its much
lighter frame it can't quite match the other design's speed or protection. The
purchase of the engines from Clan Blood Spirit may suggest a degree of
rapprochment between the Blood Spirits and Star Adders - something Clan Burrock
may find very concerning.

To compensate for operations at very high speeds, the Adders copied the
electronics fitted to an Oro heavy tank - famously used by the Snow Ravens and
Steel Vipers to engage fast-moving targets such as aerospace fighters.

With only a limited payload, the default configuration is to mount two extended
range lasers - something equivalent to the Savannah Master hovertanks spoken of
by veterans of Operation Revival.

Rather than close in, some Baalzebubs are fitted with LRMs for long range
harassment although this can lack punch. More complementary to the primary
configuration, the Baalzebub B mounts SRMs and proved successful making 'second
pass' attacks on targets with armour thinned by laser strikes.

There's obvious scope for an artillery spotter and the Baalzebub C covers this
requirement. Finally, one configuration replaces one extended range lasers with
a pulse laser to provide some limited anti-infantry capacity.


Battle History:
As a trial both of the Baalzebub and of Ice Hellion-style pack tactics, a
binary of 20 Baalzebubs was committed to a Trial of Possession for a Clan
Burrock farming district. Expecting to readily out-manuver heavy Star Adder
omnimechs the Burrocks elected to bid only eight 'Mechs in order to place the
Circle of Equals on a broad, somewhat waterlogged plain.

Star Captain Hephizah was later found to have carried out a borderline
permissible trade with Jade Falcons for books brought back to the Clan
Homeworlds from the Blackjack School of Combat. Inspired by the 5th Syrtis
Fusilier's travails on Sarna, he used his Baalzebubs to cut apart Burrock light
and medium 'Mechs with hit and run attacks, although over half his force were
destroyed before the enemy commander withdrew.

OVERVIEW:

The Astarte began its life at same time as the failed Pele VTOL project and used the same fusion engines that were stripped from
decommissioned UrbanMech. The Star Adder scientist were not distracted by the Pele as they worked on the Astarte. Both
vehicles were designed to meet the same need, a mobile unit capable of deep strikes and reconnaissance. They both shared the same engine
and could travel at the sama ground speed.

The Astarte is based on the Maultier APC that began its career in the Taurian Concordat and ended up in SLDF units as replacements
during the Amaris coup. Having been stripped of all armaments over the centuries relegated to moving supplies and troops in the service of the
Star Adder Touman, it got a chance at a new career as OmniVehicle. The chassis was modified slightly to make room for the fusion powerplant
and the addition of a small turret just above and behind the warrior's compartment. This resulted in the loss of what was once the troop/cargo
compartment, but left enough room for ammunition, if necessary.

The Astarte is protected by two and a half tons of ferro-fibrous armor and offers protection from anything equivalent to a medium pulse
laser. The speed of the Astarte is key to it battlefield survival as it exceeds 180 kph in a straight line, which makes it more difficult in many
battlefield situations.



CONFIGURATIONS:

PRIME: As there are only three tons of podspace available on the Astarte, it proved somewhat difficult to for the design team to
generate viable configurations. The Prime is the first of five and features a pair of turret-mounted extended range medium lasers while two
machineguns are mounted in the forward hull on either side of the cockpit.

A: This configuration features a medium pulse laser sharing the turret with an extended range small laser. another small laser is mount-
ed in the forward hull to the left of the warrior compartment. As all weapons are energy-based, there is no worry of re-supply which make this
model an excellent raider or long-range patrol vehicle.

B and C: These two configurations are missile-based models based on the A configuration. In the B, a five-tube LRM launcher and its
ammunition replace the medium pulse laser of the A configuration. The C model replaces the laser with a four-tube SRM launcher. The small
lasers carry over from the A configuration.

D: The final version is a dedicated scout version and feature a turret fitted with an extended range laser, a light active probe and a
TAG unit for use in guiding homing rounds from Arrow IV launchers or the semi-guided munitions that are being developed for the long-range
missile launcher. The ubiquitous extended range small laser is mounted in the forward hull.

Clan Hells Horses is the only clan that still deploys the Gabriel Hovertank, albeit in a limited function.  in the Clan Homeworlds terrain, typical hovercraft are unable to function in favorable battlefields, mostly due to jagged rock formations, deep water, or heavy foliage.  A vehicle operator named Jennifer of the 40th Mechanized Cavalry cluster suggested a radical idea.  Make the Gabriel fly.

while no small feat the idea of building an ultra light low altitude aircraft proved appealing enough that Galaxy Commander Ravenwater authorized with the Khans blessing the development of two prototype vehicles.  at first exploring a conventional helicopter option, the technicians were unable to get the speed they wanted out of the 25 rated Omni and maintain the vehicles integrity.  when Scientist Mick was brough onto the project he proposed turning the base hull into a ground effect vehicle, literally a winged flying hovercraft.  Though this required Operator Jennifer turn over test flights to a washed out aerospace pilot (as controls for a WiGE were more akin to an aerospace fighter then VTOL) the concept proved sound and both prototypes rapidly finished initial trials just before the Quicksilver initiative was announced.

all that needed to be done at this point was make the turret Omnicapable, something easy enough for the techs who were used to working on Epona hovercraft, and the original Halo 901 targeting and tracking system proved readily accepting of the software drivers.

the New Raja Indainda is thus a very capable vehicle.  slightly exceeding the Gabriels speed profile through it's friction-less operation, everything else about it is identical to it's predecessor.  though the turret can only support slightly more then a ton of hardware, Clan technology makes that ton potent.  the first configuration mirrors the medium laser of the Gabriel, while the second uses twin small lasers for increased volume of fire.  Configuration B is an artillery spotter while D is an incendiary platform meant to eliminate foliage concerns as well as place strategic fires.  as a cousin to this configuration is the extremely carefully balanced combat firefighting configuration, equipped with four lightweight sprayers and a fll ton liquid cargo pod, this configuration can make short work of any fire, or spray neutralizing agents in NBC warfare hot-zones.  crews are warned to only fill the fuel pod about 75% full, ans a full tank, while physically possible will put stress on the turret and air frame, and would require an overhaul afterwards.

the final configuration is a proposal from Clan Smoke Jaguar scientists, who have been developing a lighter weight laser of equal or better performance then the star leauge era small lasers currently used.  the so called Micro laser weighs as much as a machine gun, and slightly exceeds thee small laser in range at the expense of damage.  still as a platform for providing volume of fire, it exceeds all ofhter configurations avaliable, and the horse techs forwarded the proposal to the IlKhan.

I like it drak but the fluff and design do not seem to match. Doesn't the Shamash use a 60 Fusion Engine not a 20? Other than that nice job!

Grr. I read the base fusion rating, not the actual fusion rating.

Fixed that - and it provides another half ton of armour, rather welcome

Fluff is up.

Admittedly, I piled on assumption after assumption here, but the 238th is canon.  The J Edgar being produced in 2722 is canon.  The SLDF using 'Mechs, vehicles, and fighters produced by the Great Houses IS canon.  No, I don't know of any canon source that says the 238th had a Brian Cache, much less one with six hundred plus J Edgars.  But it fits, I think.

Overview
Following the initial success of the Hellion's Furry and the news of the Clans' defeat on Tukayyid, Khan Taney decided to try to capitalise on this early success and to prepare for the renewal of Operation Revival with the true might of the Clans.
To do this, he needed new cheap designs for the new Flurry units to be able to liberate precious BattleMechs for the front-line invasion forces.

Unwilling to commit much resources to this program, he asked the Clan Scientists to come back before him with the right design and a working prototype in less than a month.
Knowing well that they couldn't create something completely new in such a delay, they decided to look at the designs used by the Star League Defence Forces and see if they could find something here. While looking at the databases, they fond what seemed the perfect candidate: cheap, fast and with still a nasty bite: the Gabriel.

Furthermore, this hovercraft was manned by a single man, which gave plenty of opportunities to the Warriors of Clan Ice Hellion that would be assigned to them to earn enough glory in the true spirit of the Zellbrigen. And since the original design was so light, it could also be used to pack hunting a practice used quite often by the lighter elements of the Clan Touman.

At first, everything went well but upgrading the target acquisition proved too complex and Clan Ice Hellion had to use part of their newly acquired resources to make a deal with Clan Cloud Cobra with their expertise in Aerospace Fighters and their electronics.
Thanks to this deal, Clan Ice Hellion was able to produce rather quickly the new Michael (named after the Archangel, “captain of the host of the Lord” as one Cloud Cobra Scientist said).

When presented the “new” hovercraft, Khan Taney said “Like shining stars the warrior's descended/A fiery rain to purify and punish”.

Capabilities
The Michael is just a simple and clear upgrade of the Gabriel to Clan standards with better and up-to-date equipments/software.
The only true difference between the Gabriel and the Michael is that the last one is a real OmniVehicle designed to perform different roles on the battlefield while it swarms through it thanks to its speed of 243 kph.

Prime Configuration is the complete upgrade of the Gabriel with a single ER Medium Laser in the Turret.

Alpha Configuration was designed following the lessons learned during Operation Revival. With two flamers, it can deal with infantry threads or disable 'Mechs through a massive increase of their heat.
Even if this Configuration does not really fit the way the Clans fight, the battles from the Inner Sphere showed that their future opponents would not play by the rules and that “unfair” tactics could be used against these Dezgra.

Beta Configuration is focusing on the hunt of Battle Armours thanks to its Small Pulse Laser and its incredible speed, allowing it to cover great areas with only a few Michael.

Gamma Configuration came into existence in reaction against Alpha Configuration. Its two Machine Guns seemed to some more honourable to deal with infantry units.

Delta and Epsilon Configurations are odd choices made as electronical warfare tools with one equipped with an Active Probe and the other with ECM Suite. Once again the speed of the Michael was seen as a multiplier effect, allowing a few units to cover a huge surface and liberating other combat units for more precious roles.

Battle History
One of the best examples of the use of the Michael was during Operation Ice Storm when elements from the garrison forces of Clan Ice Hellion faced the wrath of Clan Hell's Horses' Theta Galaxy on the world of Last Chance.
Lacking in terms of quality of equipment and of numbers, Zeta Galaxy had to resort to their usual harassment tactics using their speed to quickly redeploy where they weren't expected.
The Michael deployed in Zeta Galaxy were used far ahead of the main forces to detect the main pushes and to either scout them or harass them.
This tactic using mobile units worked well against the infantry heavy 42nd BattleMech Cluster, which in spite of the combined-arms nature of Clan Hell's Horses' Touman was using units of different nature with different speeds, making them perfect targets for the hit-and-run surprise attacks of the lone hovercraft.
However in the end the heavier units and the superior numbers prevailed and the Michael were hunted by special combined-arms units and destroyed one by one, preventing Clan Ice Hellion to gather enough intelligence to know what was going on and to react.

Deployment
The Michael was mostly deployed in Flurry Clusters but during Operation Ice Storm, mostly because of the limited resources available to all the Ice Hellion units, some make it to the front-line units.
The end of Clan Ice Hellion meant the end of this design, although a few of them ended in the hands of Clan Hell's Horses.

Well here it is Saturday and I still keep getting designs so this was a very good challenge in my view. With at least two more entries to be posted here (there are always future possibilities after all) the Clan Hover Hellraiser sure generated interest. In all nine designs were completed by five designers and even though I have to disqualify one right off the bat all were very good. So once more before we begin the review I would like to thank everyone who participated. You are making for one damn fine Technical Readout even if it is just a Fanbook. I for one am having a hell of a good time putting together.

N/A. Raja Indainda (JPArbiter)
Fractional accounting and a WiGE movement type get you bounced almost instantly but I gotta say these disqualifications are pretty awesome. JP has bought another type of Ultralight Clan Vehicle to the table for future development. Not a bad thing. Comparing you to Ice Hellion’s Michael I see that the WiGE is slightly faster than the Hovercraft and I am sure there are more advantages of which I remain unaware. This 5 ton entry put forward by the Hell’s Horses was based upon the Gabriel Hovertank once deployed by the SLDF. The Engine remains the same but the Vehicle increases speed thanks to its movement type (14/21). Just under a ton of Clan Ferro-Fibrous (19 factor) provides good protection for a design of its size which relies on speed to survive. With 1.259 tons of pod space you slightly improve on the Gabriel and tack on some pretty interesting configurations. Yes Micro Lasers are in development but in this universe they are likely to be fitted on Ultralight Vehicles like this one rather than the ProtoMech. Simply inspired sir! Excellent job breaking the rules once again although I should really stop encouraging you.

8. Michael (Ice Hellion)
Well this is the first time a designer has submitted an entry from a Clan that he shares a name with. This 5 ton Ultralight submission from Ice Hellion is nicely based on the SLDF Gabriel from Technical Readout 2750 fame. The 25 Fusion Engine (13/20) is straight from the original Gabriel and I doubt making new models would require a massive investment in time or resources. With 1 ton of Ferro-Fibrous (19 factor) on a 5 ton design I would say you have plenty of protection for a design of its size. A half ton turret does spread out your armor and I would have considered leaving it out. With only 1 ton of pod space you don’t have much room for weapons and equipment. However you do a nice job with many of the configurations mounting everything from a ER Medium, to a couple of Flamers, to a Small Pulse, to a couple of Machine Guns. I do not really get the two configurations with an Active Probe and ECM Suite. Lack of weapons would not really please a Clan warrior. The name is very ably done and most appropriate in my opinion to this contest. Your fluff was pretty good and even the Cloud Cobra assistance does not seem over blown. References to Operation Ice Storm are a tad bit premature as this is 3052 just after Tukayyid. Mostly cause of your small size I am placing in you in 8th place this time out Ice. Hope we will see you again in these contests.

7. Astarte (Abele)
Another awesome Ultralight was again presented by the Star Adders based on the old Star League Maultier. The way in which you kept in around as a common equipment hauler was done well in the fluff. This 13 ton design takes its 60 Fusion Engine (11/17) from decommissioned UrbanMechs much like the Pele from a competition before. With 2.5 tons of Ferro-Fibrous (48 factor) this Combat Vehicle has good protection for its size. The half ton turret does spread this out but does enable its 3 tons of pod space to be mounted with extra agility. While you have a Light Active Probe which is unavailable currently in Configuration D your arsenal could be quite formidable. I don’t understand however why some weaponry was not turret mounted when you have the room. Good job overall although I admit that using the Greek name for Ishtar made me think why is he putting a 65 ton Wheeled OmniVehicle here for?

6. Camulus (Abele)
This 30 ton entry from Clan Diamond Shark was based on the ancient Rim Worlds Hipparch obtained from the Scorpion archives. I went back and forth on the fluff which has great parts like using battlefield isorla like the 140 Fusion Engine from Kurita Panthers along with the very premature Shark enclave on Itabiana. Yeah that was canon but this is only 3052 and that was a Jihad era event. I do love the name and the design is pretty solid. The aforementioned 140 Fusion Engine (9/14) which can also be found on the Howler (Baboon) BattleMech and the Odin Scout Tank gives this OmniVehicle good speed with ample sources for power plants. You set the standard for this challenge with 4 tons of Ferro Fibrous (76 factor) providing ample protection for this hell raiser. Most impressively 10 tons of pod space along with a full ton turret gives users the ability to mount everything in that mobile location. You have wide variety of capable configurations from F with its Large Pulse to C with a Ultra AC/5. Not bad at all Abele.

5. Tyr (drakensis)
Rebuilding an Odin Scout Tank with a hover drive train does grab your attention I will say. This 27 ton Hell’s Horses design was envisioned as an escort for the Svantovit Infantry Fighting Vehicle is nicely done. While the fluff is a little light, the name is good, and the design is better even if it is an odd tonnage. The 140 Fusion Engine (10/15) is a solid choice for hover designs around 30 tons and with a little tonnage stripped out you increased the speed slightly. You follow the standard 4 tons of Ferro Fibrous (76 factor) protection that many of your opponents also featured. With 7.5 tons of pod space and a half ton turret you can mount five tons of armament in a very mobile location. Love your Primary Configuration copied from the Odin which would make for a nice transition for some existing crews. The others I am less jubilant about with B being slightly flawed with a 1 ton piece of equipment likely the Active Probe or the ECM Suite being misplaced. All in all a solid entry.

4. Baalzebub (drakensis) [Star Adder]
Great job here drakensis with this 8 ton Star Adder Ultralight. Along with a very appropriate name you did a nice job with straight forward fluff. I liked the part about Blood Spirit supplying the 60 Fusion Engine (12/18) in a possible move towards rapprochement. Most just tend to pick up the post Absorption hatred but that has not happened and the universe is a changing. Plus both Clans have a common goal in this Vehicle development. Likewise the battle history against Burrock was interesting along with a little blurb about the Blackjack School of Combat. Of course 1 ton of Ferro Fibrous (19 factor) is rather light armor but this is an ultralight. Plus you did not waste any mass on a turret which improves protection. The 2 tons of pod space is ably front mounted in most cases and I like the configurations from long ranged A with its missiles to others mainly energy based. I already like this one and with Micro Lasers and other smaller equipment right around the corner it can only get better.

3. Nike (masterarminas)
This 25 ton Star Adder proposal done by way of the Wolf Clan and Natasha Kerensky at the expense of the Smoke Jaguars is superbly done. The way at which this story is unwoven makes me wish I could write fluff this good. Not only does it build on canon elements but it also masterfully includes Quicksilver and Clarion Call story threads as well. While the cache is not canon the clever way in which you integrated the 238th Armored Division, the Jaguars fierce opposition to this whole sham, and growing ties to the Adders is wonderful. Wonderfully done! The design, which again does have a turret, is almost an after thought but still is pretty good even with a few errors. The 4.5 tons of Ferro Fibrous (86 factor) make it the best protected design of the contest but there are a couple of problems. The 6 tons of pod space is a magic number for the inclusion of an ER Large or Large Pulse on these OmniVehicles which you did. However Alternate Configuration A would be illegal because of the weight of the Large Pulse (6 tons) increases the Turret (5 tons every half ton) mass. Other than that I like the configurations but you got caught trying to do too much. The 145 Leenex Fusion Engine (11/17) is the biggest problem I have with this design. It is not in production currently in the Homeworlds so a new factory must be built from scratch. Yes it is a small engine and it could be done relatively easy by the Clans. Still your competitors have the edge. However, the 145 Leenex Fusion Engine (11/17) is manufactured on Sudeten by the Jade Falcons for the J Edgar. After reading the fluff I really wanted to proclaim this one the winner but ultimately because of the engine I have to place you third.

2. Morrigu (drakensis)
So close!! The Morrigu is nearly what I wanted but in the end lacked one thing. One of the most difficult things to do with these challenges is to keep track of all the existing components and how best they can fit in the current contest. This 45 ton Ice Hellion entry was the sole design to fill the existing gap currently existing for Clan Combat Vehicles. Using the 215 Vox Fusion Engine (10/15) from the Badger is an inspired choice which I personally loved. It gets one of the first Clan OmniVehicles back in the game so to speak and leaves us with 14 tons of pod space. With a one and a half ton turret all weaponry can be fit seamlessly into this mobile location. This is a plus as I love the configurations which include a Gauss, an Ultra AC/20, and an Arrow IV among others. Fantastic. However, with only 3.5 tons of Ferro-Fibrous (67 factor) you lack sufficient protection in my opinion. Your lighter competitors have more armor and are as fast or faster. What really surprised me is that no one went the route of the Gladius, no turret. On this hell raiser, not a tank, it could have provided extra protection. A very close second place drak!

1. Tanit (JP Arbiter)
The first entry to sight the J Edgar as its basis this 25 ton Blood Spirit entry is quite well done. With Fire Mandrill technical assistance they were able to assemble a larger Shamash essentially using 120 Fusion Engines (10/15) taken from bone caches. These power plants usually coming from the SLDF Thorn and Flea BattleMechs make it a little slower than its predecessor which is still very fast. Using the electronics package from the Shamash only adds to the flavor which comes together quickly. Production wise this thing could quickly develop through testing and right into front line service and I love the name after the Patron Goddess of Carthage which is a great touch. With 4 tons of Ferro Fibrous (75 factor) this OmniVehicle with a Turret comes with solid protection. It can pretty much take an impact from a 15 damage factor round (ER PPC and Gauss) and survive counting on its movement to avoid a big beating. Finally 8 tons of pod space enables it to carry a potent arsenal which makes for some pretty good configurations. Prime with its ER Large linked to a Targeting Computer and an ECM Suite can sure make for a long range pest which can stay out in the field forever. Alternate A is rapid fire support vehicle which relies on a LRM 15 to deliver punishment. B is your infantry deliverer (5 ton compartment) with two SRM 4s for close range defense while C is the ultimate recon asset with a TAG, ECM Suite, and Active Probe finding the enemy while 2 Medium Pulses serve as defense. Very nice job Arbiter, congrats on the win!

All nine designs were really well done and placing them was not easy. I was really surprised that every design save one installed a turret. In a couple of challenges we will be coming up on tanks which may require turrets but here I think you could have gotten bye without them. Great competition, thanks again gang! Now on to the next challenge!!

I will try to answer them.
Regarding the turret and the weight available for the weapons... I too found it a bit annoying but I wanted to keep the changes to the Gabriel to a minimum. The Michael is just a retrofit and the Gabriel had a turret.
Fluff and battle. I know I overextended myself but this was the only massive operation where I could see a massive use for the Michael and against the masters of combined-arms (at least for the Clans). It was my choice but it didn't pay.
Ultralight. Flurry units would not get heavy/expensive designs and this one was fast enough.
ECM and Active Probe. Sometimes, to win a battle, you need to disturb or find your opponents. I don't think these Configurations would be used a lot but you might find a Warrior that understand what team work is.

That is probably what a lot of designers will say. Designs like the J Edgar for example have a turret so they stuck with what they had. I was just surprised that more folks (drak was the only one with Baalzebub) to drop the turret and try a more Gladius type harasser.

Battles in the aftermath of the Hellion's Fury would have been acceptable as well as Quicksilver Trails against other Clans. Basically using this new equipment against Clan X to prove its worth.

I did modify it somewhat including large parts of masterarminas nike (also based on the J Edgar), my own events for Clarion Call, as well as some other things from our contest. OVERVIEW
As the pressure for an invasion of the InnerSphere began to build the Blood Spirits sought to augment their forces. Since the Shamash had been a roaring success many felt a companion vehicle which could serve as an escort providing heavier longer ranged support would be a superb addition to the Touman. Looking to the J Edgar, a ubiquitous light hover tank from the SLDF, the Spirits went to work. Scientists dubbed their design the Tanit after the Patron Goddess of Carthage as a symbol of the Clan’s resolve in the face of adversity. Obstacles like the declining level of availability for its Leenex 145 power plant and the Clan’s notoriously poor finances led to the project lingering in research and development for decades.
   The Quicksilver Program jolted the nimble hovercraft off the drawing board and into prototype testing quickly. Despite the addition of all new modular parts and the replacement of the original fusion reactor with a smaller more accessible engine prior to the Thirty First Quicksilver Trial the Spirits persevered. Nearly a binary was ready for technical demonstration thanks to their Techs expertise in placing the components on almost any platform imaginable. Early tests intrigued Wolf Khan Natasha Kerensky who was strongly advocating another J Edgar OmniTank for her Touman. Hedging her bets, the legendary Black Widow began making overtures to the Blood Spirits. Many were still leery of such advances especially because of Star Adder involvement with the venture.
The Spirits were idealists who had clashed with the pragmatic Adders even before that Clan’s close association with the hated Burrocks. Kerensky overcame these reservations by sending Star Captain Sumner Johns of the 3rd Battle Cluster to conduct negotiations. The Blood Spirits were clearly impressed by their former comrade who had fought in numerous battles during Operation Revival. Offering to supply the bulk of the 120 Fusion Engines needed for early full scale production from Wolf stockpiles built throughout the invasion was the clincher. A perfunctory trial returned Johns to his Clan and ultimately cemented the deal. The Spirits sealed a new alliance with the Wolves soon after by naming him ilChi to that Clan.

CAPABILITIES
The first Tanit’s were constructed with parts borrowed from the Shamash and engines ripped from ancient BattleMechs and conventional vehicles no one would miss. Initial examples of the 120 Fusion Engine were found cached away on undervalued Flea, Stinger, and Wasp ‘Mechs. More recently the Wolf Clan has furnished salvaged units taken in the InnerSphere to supply the Hovertank’s power till new models also being manufactured for the Claybeg are in production. Like it’s engine, the armor was also downgraded so as to allow the new vehicle to carry payloads consisting of the Spirits most common weaponry. Despite the expense, Compound JX2 Ferro-Fibrous was used on the new design, using the same molds as it's cousins, creating an odd visual hybrid of the Shamash and J Edgar.
   Technical assistance provided by other Clans produced a final set of weapon configurations for the Tanit after its Quicksilver victory. The primary arrangement of a single Extended Range Medium Laser, two Streak SRM-4s, and two Machine Guns is essentially an upgraded version of the original J Edgar. Effective against vehicles and light ‘Mechs this version has become the main stay of Spirit OmniTank forces. Alternate Configuration A with its ER Large Laser connected directly to a Targeting Computer is a highly accurate long range sniper. Two additional Heat Sinks help dissipate the massive heat bloom generated by its main gun while an ECM insures advanced targeting gear functions at all times. Configuration B is a distant fire support platform armed with four LRM-5s while two Anti-Missile Systems defend against any incoming missile.
This “support variant” is perhaps the most unpopular due to its ancillary role which many warriors disdain. Alternate Configuration C again draws on the J Edgar for inspiration upgrading its arsenal with superior anti-infantry weaponry. A Medium Pulse Laser and two SRM-6s provide superior firepower especially against common troopers. Two Anti-Personnel Pods mounted front and back also help versus these foot soldiers. Configuration D is a close range reconnaissance combatant which appeals to many Clan warriors. Six Extended Range Small Lasers resemble the Shamash’s armament which is augmented by Targeting Acquisition Gear allowing the Tanit to serve as an artillery spotter. Additionally, an Active Probe and ECM Suite give this variant exceptional scouting capability.
 
DEPLOYMENT
Defeating eight competitors including the heavier Morrigu put forward by the Ice Hellions the Tanit was quickly introduced into the Blood Spirit Touman. As it was a front line OmniTank it never became the companion of the Shamash because of that vehicle’s conventional second line nature. Its two two-man crew consists of a driver (typically a civilian Technician caste) who sits in an isolated cockpit on the left-hand side of the chassis, while the turret (containing the Warrior who commands the vehicle and operates the weaponry) is placed on the right-hand side. Although this asymmetric configuration is unusual, the Tanit's control computers ensure that the Hovertank has a smooth ride despite the imbalance. Aside from the Spirits, the greatest number of Tanits have been produced by the Star Adders who activated several J Edgars seized from a Smoke Jaguar cache. That Clan also dedicated a secondary production facility on its homeworld of Sheridan to build additional units. Many have been sold to the Ice Hellions and Hell’s Horses who like the Blood Spirits are seeking to modularize their front line vehicular forces. Diamond Shark’s newly minted Delta Galaxy also fields a substantial amount of these Hover Omni Tanks. Star Adder and Wolf actually possess the least number of Tanits currently in service with the Clans. The Fire Mandrills are the only other Clan with access to the vehicle schematics but no Kindraa has indicated they will field it.
