Title: Quicksilver Program #35: Clan Main Battle Tank (Tracked)

We now come to the crème de la crème of the new Clan Vehicle Force, the Main Battle Tank. This Tracked OmniVehicle should be able to take on a BattleMech and emerge victorious especially against an InnerSphere opponent. I really want to outmatch any potential Spheroid Heavy when it comes to speed, firepower, and yes even armor. It should be a respected presence on the field of battle threatening even Clan opponents. Finally this center piece design should be able to keep pace with Clan line forces. To that end this is the one Vehicle contest where Extra Light (XL) Engines will be permitted.

While there are only two Clans remaining who will produce this design (Diamond Shark and Ice Hellion) every single one that participated in these Vehicle Trails will assist here. Expect Star Adder strategic analysis, Wolf tactical acumen, and Hell’s Horses armored expertise all to be available. Originally I saw the Horses the manufacturer here but the last contest put them out. Despite that these Clans along with Coyote scientists will make attempts to influence the final product which they want to utilize as well. You can expect this challenge to be used as an excuse to test out all sorts of XL Tank designs by some radical thinkers.

However the decision to allow XL Engines on this new OmniVehicle is not without controversy. There is Blood Spirit and Fire Mandrill opposition to such a non traditional vehicle mounting an Extra Light Engine which in their view is too expensive. I could see them trying to float a design from the “loyal opposition” here that would use standard fusion engines. While this probably is not the first time this concept has been explored it will likely be the first Clan OmniVehicle to ever be mass produced with an XL Engine.

Using an XL Engine will also make other Clans even less interested in this design or more upset. Those uninterested in the development of OmniVehicles will want absolutely nothing to do with this greater waste of resources. Let us not forget those who despise this entire effort (Jade Falcon, Smoke Jaguar, and Burrock) cause they will go to extremes here. Remember all entries must follow established Naming Conventions for Clan Vehicles meaning Gods of War should be your guide. This will be the final contest where an Ultralight is acceptable and I would like to see a Tracked XL version if you can manage. Typically these tiny OmniVehicles are at a distinct disadvantage when compared to their Hover, VTOL, and even Wheeled cousins. Using an Extra Light engine should help level the playing field so to speak. While such an Ultralight may not win this contest I do have plans for the very best entries.

Again it is important to fill the missing gaps in the existing Clan Vehicle Force which can be seen in Technical Readout 3060. This has been a consistent theme of the Quicksilver Program I would like to see it continue here. There are still five mass categories (45 tons, 70 tons, 80 tons, 90 tons, 95 tons) which remain vacant. Filling gaps will serve to augment existing Clan designs even though they are not modular in nature.

Overview:
The Yen Lo Wang was built by Clan Diamond Shark upon the framework of the
legendary Von Luckner heavy tank that had served as a mainstay as the SLDF's
defensive forces. The old engine had barely been able to bring the seventy-five
ton war machine up to a paltry 54kph - completely inadequate for a fast-moving
clan tactics. It's therefore been replaced with a far larger and more powerful
reactor already in production in Clan Wolf's factories. The armour was likewise
improved upon, saving weight so that the Yen Lo Wang would bring death to the
battlefield as surely as his legendary inspiration - and almost as swiftly as
the famous BattleMech of Kai Allard-Liao.


Capabilities:
With a top speed equal to that of most Clan heavy OmniMechs, the Yen Lo Wang
can keep up with heavy formations and it has the protection to weather multiple
strikes from even the largest weapons.

Almost a third of the tank's tonnage is allocated to weapons and ammunition. In
primary configuration it closely resembles the Von Luckner, with an
assault-grade autocannon and missiles in the turret and rear, while a flamer
graces the nose.

A configuration swaps the autocannon for a Gauss Rifle and supports this with
an LRM pack. Two medium lasers add to the punch.

To deal with infantry the B configuration uses four machine guns. The turret
carries a PPC - unusual for a combat vehicle - and several advanced SRM
launchers.

Unlike most configurations the Yen Lo Wang C sports two direct fire weapons in
the turret - a large laser and a heavy dual purpose autocannon for what crews
describe as the 'shake and bake' effect. A supplementary missile pack rounds
out the armament.

Although it has a large laser in the turret, the primary role of the D
configuration is to bring to bear savage LRM barrages.

Absolutely.  I would make some minor tweaks perhaps look at the speed again. Most importantly updated the manufacturer cause the Horses are now out.

Overview:
Derived from the long-serving Alacorn, which is traditionally more of a fire
support tank than a main battle tank, the Janus was built by engineers at one
of Clan Ice Hellion's primary Mech Works as much to one-up the neighbouring
Vehicle Works Gamma as with hopes of securing an overall victory.

Once it became clear that the Ice Hellions had excellent chances to secure the
Omni-MBT role in the Quicksilver challenges, Khan Taney threw additional
resources to the project, seeing it as a way to bolster garrison forces and
free up lighter units for renewed aggression against other Homeworld Clans.

The result more closely resembles the Demolisher heavy tanks encountered by all
the invading clans in recent years. As the design post-dates the Star League,
the Ice Hellions aren't believed to have a sample but BattleROMs may have
reached them.


Capabilities:
Without an engine entirely suited to the 95 ton Alacorn, the scientists
lightened the frame by five tons  so they could maintain the same speed with
the engine borrowed from their on-hand Incubus production line. The same line
provided armour and electronics, which simplified design work considerably.
However, the Janus carries much larger weapons than a light 'Mech and the
Version Gamma-V targeting systems can struggle at times. Pressed for time the
scientists opted, rather than replacing the computers, to request surkai for
giving the testing crews 'too challenging a task', correctly guessing the
complaint would be silenced at that point.

With more than a third again the protection of the Alacorn Mk VI, the Janus has
little to fear from direct fire on the battlefield. Crews who already consider
the tank little more than a pillbox are unlikely to be deterred by further loss
of mobility if the tracks are damaged.

The weapon layout is quite different from the original Alacorn, eschewing the
original large triple turret for a more compact arrangement that includes an
integral anti-missile system. To ease pressure on the targeting systems, there
are also two hard-wired missile launchers in the forward hull.

The primary firepower of the Janus is almost always a pair of large ballistic
weapons in the turret. The most common choice is a pair of Gauss Rifles, but
paired dual purpose autocannon or ultra autocannon are also commonly equipped.
Less commonly, the E configuration pairs an ultra and a dual purpose
autocannon.

The Janus C breaks this pattern by fitting a single gauss rifle, an extended
range large laser and a second missile launcher. Finally in D configuration,
the Janus carries a pair of extended range PPCs. While this offers excellent
endurance, the Janus rarely runs out of ammunition anyway with its large ammo
bins deep inside the hull.


Deployment:
Thus far the Ice Hellions have only deployed their prototypes on Hector and
Strana Mechty for testing. This may reflect caution at the fate of other
prototype designs that have fallen into other Clans' hands.

Overview:

For the final Quicksilver Combat OmniVehicle Competition, Khan Ian Hawker of Clan Diamond Shark was determined to present the Clans with a capable and effective design that could meet or exceed all of the ilKhan's requirements.  Despite the vehement opposition the OmniVehicle Phase of Quicksilver inspired from certain 'traditionalist' Clans, Hawker was convinced that the Clans needed to adopt some greater emphasis on supporting vehicular elements.  Tukayyid, and the lessons learned there, remained seared into his memory.

The effectiveness of the ComGuard vehicles had played a large role in the defeat of the Clans.  And while the Invasion itself was stopped (and the Sharks with control over one solitary world far from the front lines) . . . the terms of the Truce did not forbid additional fighting.  Hawker noted that there were plenty of worlds 'above' the Truce Line; further, the Inner Sphere powers were not restricted from attacked worlds that the Clans had already conquered.

And while the Falcons and Jaguars were loath to admit it, the Clans had been seriously weakened by the battles that raged across Tukayyid and those which had preceded them.

Turning to his Scientists, Hawker demanded of them that they create a Main Battle Omni-Tank suitable for the Clans of Kerensky.  Designated as Shiva (the Hindu god known as 'The Destroyer'), this tank would have to be the finest Shark creation in order to win acceptance.

To that end, Hawker turned to Khan Fletcher of the Horses and Khan Kerensky of the Wolves and, in an unprecedented move, he requested their aid and assistance in designing the Shiva.

To say the Wolf and the Horse were taken aback would be an understatement . . . but in the end, both decided to aid the Sharks . . . for a price.  But the Sharks were no weak Clan to be intimidated; nor was their leader inept at negotiating a bargain.  In the end, despite their initial demands, both Wolf and Horse would receive 10% of Shiva production for the next ten years.

With the deal enacted, Khan Hawker unveiled the concept that he had in mind.


Development

The new Clan OmniTank would be based on the Lyran Rommel/Patton design used so effectively against Clans Wolf and Jade Falcon during the second year of the Invasion.  Hundreds of these tanks had been destroyed during Revival; hundreds more abandoned due to damage or outright captured in their depots by fast-moving Clan assaults on scores of worlds.

Hawker requested that Khan Kerensky ship every available Rommel and Patton, damaged or not, back to the Homeworlds.  He even approached Khan Crichell about purchasing examples of these tanks languishing in the Falcon Occupation Zone.  However, in a fit of piqué over the Quicksilver Vehicle Trials, Crichell not only refused, he ordered every captured Rommel and Patton in Falcon possession to be destroyed!

Luckily, the Sharks had already managed to acquire (throughout 3050-52) several dozen examples of the design for their Scientists and Technicians to study in detail.

Work began on these examples even as the Wolves began to ship hundreds more  to Strana Mechty.

The Rommels and Pattons were rebuilt, their fusion engines, armor, turrets, sensors, and electronics removed.  Demanding that the Shiva be able to keep pace with common Clan heavy-weight OmniMechs, the Horses were pushed to provide an ample supply of Fusion 325 Extra-Light engines from their Hellbringer production lines.  These engines would give the Shiva a cruise speed of 54 kilometers per hour and a flank speed of 86.4 kph . . . enough to match a Timber Wolf over open ground.

The communications array was the TDWS-37 Mk. 2.2 taken from the Diamond Shark DSF-12 facility on Tathis.  Originally developed for the Warhammer IIC, this comm array was robust and easy to maintain.  Likewise, the Sharks donated the Hermes CT-44 tracking & targeting array from the same production, along with the Forging ZM15 ferro-fibrous armor plating.

Eleven and one-half tons of armor would be fitted to the design, giving the Shiva greater protection than the Rommel for the same weight penalty as the Patton

Arguments erupted during the design as Sharks, Horses, and Wolves began to debate the armament.  The Horses insisted on eliminating the short-ranged anti-infantry weapons of the Rommel/Patton, to which the Wolves howled in disagreement.  The two teams almost came to blows, when Khan Hawker stepped in and asked the Horses why they should eliminate those systems?

The Horses snorted and then slammed one fist down on the proposed schematics.  "It is an Omni-Tank, Khan Hawker!  Able to carry five Elementals as mechanized battle armor riders into combat.  Why waste the tonnage and cooling ability on a pair of Flamers or Small Pulse Lasers when those Elementals can do the job so much better?"

And Hawker agreed; seeing that the Shark and Horse were standing together, the Wolves let the anti-personnel weapons slide.

But that led to the next great debate, for the Wolves demanded that all of the weapons be concentrated in the turret--which this time, the Horses did not want!

Hawker ended this argument by siding with the Wolves . . . telling the Horses that to add an Omni-bay on the front of the tank would require changing the internal layout and weakening the frontal armor protection.  The final design would have all of the weapons within the turret.

And yet, it seemed as though there would not be enough surface area to fit the available mass and internal volume; not without a complete turret redesign that would be visually distinctive.  But Khan Hawker wanted the design to remain as close in visual appearance to existing Rommels and Pattons as possible.  Neither the Horses nor the Wolves would condone the inclusion of a five-tube LRM mount--and a larger mount would require repositioning the main gun . . . which was from the beginning intended as a modular Omni-mount.

Determined to keep the appearance as close as possible, Hawker ordered a search of his Archives . . . and even called upon the Goliath Scorpions (for forgiveness of a small (very small) portion of their debt) to research a more compact LRM system.

And they found one.  The FarFire Maxi-Rack LRM-20 originally used on the SLDF Atlas.  This LRM system contained just five launch tubes, but fired four missile flights in rapid succession; although the system was as heavy as a conventional LRM-20, it was far more compact and required the surface area of just a five-tube launch system.  And it was exactly what the Shark needed.

Except, it was too big and too massive.  He knew that neither the Wolf nor the Horse would accept a fixed LRM-20 system that would leave less than fifteen tons of pod-space for other systems.  So, he ordered his engineers to convert the existing Clan Type XV "Crossbow" fifteen-tube LRM launcher into a new weapon using the same principles as the FarFire Maxi-Rack.  And it worked.  While still retaining the five external tubes of the Rommel and Patton designs, the Shiva would mount a fixed LRM-15 system (with Artemis IV fire-control) and three full tons of ammunition stored within the body of the tank.

Predictably, neither Kerensky nor Fletcher were very happy with this idea, but after realizing that 16.0 tons would remain for pod-space, the two agreed to Hawker's demand.  Besides, both Khans came to the realization that the fixed LRM system would provide the design with no-heat flexibility to supplement and support the modular Omni-weapons mounts.


Configurations:

All configurations of the Shiva include a fixed Type XVb "Crossbow (Compact)" LRM-15 with Artemis IV fire-control and three tons of LRM ammunition (24 missile salvoes); the ammunition is stored within the body of the vehicle while the Type XVb is fitted to the turret on the right-hand side of the main gun.

The Shiva Prime is also armed with a Thunderstroke Series 2b Gauss Rifle (with three tons of ammunition for 24 shots) and a Series 2 ER Medium Laser.

Configuration A features a Type 9 Ultra AC-10 (three tons of ammunition for 30 single bursts or 15 double-taps), two Series 2 ER Medium Lasers, and a Pattern Iota ECM Suite. 

Configuration B is armed with a Type KOV LB-10X autocannon (three tons of ammunition for 30 bursts) and a Series 14 Medium Pulse Laser.  A Pathfinder Series Active Probe has also been fitted to the turret.

Configuration C mounts a Devastator Ultra AC-20 with four tons of ammunition (20 single bursts or 10 double-taps).

Configuration D features a Type Q7 LB-20X autocannon with three tons of ammunition (15 bursts) and a Series 2 ER Medium Laser.

configuration E is armed with a Type DAK LB-5X autocannon with two tons of ammunition (40 bursts), a Series 7 ER Large Laser, and a Hellion Class Homing TAG.  Two additional heat sinks have been added to deal with heat production from the laser.

The Shiva F has been outfitted with a Type DDS "Kingston" ER PPC, a Series 4 Small Pulse Laser, a Pathfinder Series Active Probe, and a Pattern Iota ECM Suite.  Seven additional heat sinks have been added to cool the excess heat production of these weapons.

And finally, there is Configuration G.  A Kolibri Series Delta Large Pulse Laser is mounted co-axial to a Type 21 Ultra AC-5 autocannon (with two tons of ammo for 40 single bursts or 20 double-taps).  Two Type VII Rotary Cannon Machine-Guns (fed by a half-ton of ammunition for 100 bursts of fire) are also mounted.

Reaction:

The Shiva is either admired or hated.  Clans such as Star Adder and Goliath Scorpion (though they do not use vehicles), Coyote and Blood Spirit; all of these acknowledged that the design was well armored, adequately armed, and incredibly fast (for a 65-ton Clan tracked vehicle!).  Others, such as the Jade Falcons and Smoke Jaguars, consider the design a pure abomination . . . and the fact that the Sharks used an Inner Sphere design as their basis for the OmniTank has made their blood boil even further.

While the Falcons have simply refused to have any further dealings with the Sharks (other than destroying all existing Lyran tanks in their Occupation Zone), the Jaguars have (as usual) leapt before they looked.  They have declared that if the Shiva is declared the winner of the competition, that they will seize Tathis from the Sharks and raze manufacturing facility DFS-12 to the ground! 

To which Ian Hawker (much to the delight of his rank-and-file Warriors in the Homeworlds) replied:

"Bring it, you brainless excuse for a free-birth surat."

It took eight Khans to hold Khan Osis back before the Ebon Keshik arrived to separate the two men.  This rift between the Sharks and the Jaguars has been taken quite seriously by some among the Khans; Khan N'Buta of Clan Star Adder (for example) has suggested to the ilKhan that should the two Clans go to war, it might well be necessary to activate one or more fresh Clans to secure the Jaguar Occupation Zone.  A suggestion which Khan Lereoux has (reluctantly) endorsed.

We have some very good contenders thus far. Some of the best names for Clan Vehicles are now in play.

Can't wait to see JP go all in! 8)

Hopefully we can also convince Abele to get in this contest as he already idea. Quoting from the Arapaho your Quicksilver 22 entry "It was part of a triumvirate of fifty-five ton warmachines based on the brand new XL275 fusion engine which was entering final testing when he began his project. Project Pariah was to be a new OmniMech loosely based on the Stormcrow, while Project Manitou was to be an OmniVehicle." I would love to see the Manitou (55 tons) or a MBT using the same engine as a Coyote Mech and Fighter. The Coyote scientists are here to facilitate this and the designs are there. They could go to either Diamond Shark or the Hellions to facilitate.

I've got an idea myself. Maybe I will get some help on it.  ;)

OVERVIEW:

Lead by Galaxy Commander Curtis, Clan Ice Hellion's second-line galaxy commanders had been urging the khans of the Clan for yeras to replace the outdated vehicle complements of the touman's Cavalier clusters. Nearly all of the vehicles within the touman date back to Operation Klondike or beyond. Their condition is abominable and often so untrustworthy that they are left out of bids. Khan Cage finally acquiesced just as the Operaton Revival Trials were about to begin. Using both the Alacorn and Puma heavy tanks pulled from the scrapyard as test hulls, Hellion designers set to developing a new general purpose main battle tank. True to their nature, the engineers went about designing the fastest tank possible on a 95-ton chassis. As the Revival Trials ended and the Hellion's Fury began, the development process stalled as Clan assets were diverted to combat and the eventual recovery following the conclusion of the Hellion's Fury Campaign.

With the extension of the IlKhan's Quicksilver challenge into the realm of Aerospace and Vehicular combat, the engineers pulled out all the stops and procured a pair of 380XL engines from the salvaged remains of two Gladiator OmniMech, just like the team that wwas working on the Tuscarora fighter. One of each engine was mounted in the two hulls they had available. After several tests, it was decided to use the alacorn as the base hull for their new Omnivehicle.
Protected by 14.5 tons of ferro-fibrous armor, the Uller boasted protection that rivaled the Dire Wolf OmniMech. Able to reach speeds of 65kph, the Uller outpaced the Dire Wolf and could keep pace with the Gladiator and Warhawk Assault mechs.



CONFIGURATIONS:

With thirty-two tons of pod space available, the engineers had a preponderance space with which to arm their new Omnivehicle and the engineers played around with that space to their heart's delight. What follows is what was ultimately decided upon. Please note that many of the configurations draw upon the Gladiator OmniMech for their inspiration.

PRIME: Based upon the Gladiator Prime, the Gauss rifle is the main weapon and is backed up by an extended range large laser. Though a second laser would have been nice to have, but the limitations of using outmoded heat sinks put the kaibosh on that plan. Extended range lasers of the small and medium variety provided additional back up firepower.

CONFIGURATION A: A pair of large pulse lasers make up the main battery of this configuration. A Class 5 LB-X autocannon provides additional firepower and can be used in the AAA role. a pair of machineguns are mounted forward to discourage infantry attacks.

CONFIGURATION B: Based on the Gladiator B, an LB-Xauticannon replaces the OmniMech's Ultra autocannon. An extended range PPC provides more than adequate back up to the autocannon. a ten-tube LRM launcher provides additional long-range fire support while an anti-missile system is mounted to engage incoming missile fire.

CONFIGURATION C: Mounting a quartet of fifteen-tube LRM launchers, this variant represents the long-range fire support model. To improve accuracy each of the launchers is fitted with an Artemis IV fire control system. A pair of medium pulse lasers provide close-in support, while a hull mounted extended rang small laser is meant to discourage infantry attacks. An anti-missile system is mounted to counter enemy counterbattery fire.

CONFIGURATION D: Mounted a pair of Class 10 autocannons, one of each type, the D configuration I more a general combatant. Each autocannon is fed by a three-ton ammunition magazine. The cannons are backed up by a lone large pulse laser.

CONFIGURATION E: A simple configuration, this final configuration features a pair of extended range large lasers mated with a pair of six-tube Streak SRM launchers in the turret. A pair of machineguns are mounted in the forward hull, while an ECM suite allows the tank to stay hidden fromenemies.

A proof-of-concept design, the scientific team behind Clan Coyote's Pariah Project thought it would be a good idea to apply the new 275XL engine to a new Omnivehicle. However, after developing some computer models based on a 55-ton chassis (the same weight as the Pariah OmniMech and the Arapaho Omnifighter), it was found that it left only fifteens for podspace, which the military minders of the project thought was insufficient for its intended use. Given this poor result, Scientist Keiichi decided to add some weight to the design raising the weight to an unconventional 68 tons. After the application of armor, some fixed weaponry and making allowances for a configurable turret, the Manitou II had a full thirty tons available for weapons and ammunition.

Many of the configurations feature large autocannons as the primary weapon of choice. The Prime features a pair of Gauss Rifles and sixtons of ammunition. The second configuration features a Class 20 LB-X cannon paired with an extended range PPC that gives it knockdown ability as the vehicle closes to exploit the massive firepower of the autocannon. The third configuration features a pair of Class 10 autocannons, one of each type, backed up by a pair of medium pulse lasers.

The final two configurations are fire support modules. The first features a pair of large pulse lasers teamed up an Artemis IV-equipped twenty-tube LRM launcher. The second is a dedicated missile platform with four Artemis IV-equipped fifteen-tube LRM launchers with an extended range large laser as a backup weapon.

On the Uller why is the turret so large? Couldn't you get bye with a 2.5 tonner (25 ton capacity) instead of a 3 (30 ton capacity)?

Overview:

Clan Diamond Sharks Merchants, Scientists and Technicians in an effort to make a Main Battle Tank that was not only highly effective, but also wouldn't break the bank thus decreasing sales immediately discarded building an Assault class design as too big, too slow and too expensive.

Directed towards the perennial favorite of the Inner Sphere, the Manticore MBT of the defunct TechniCorp company based on Terra by several antique tank enthusiasts of the Goliath Scorpions (whose secondary contributions have lead to the highly profitable Mecha Kids Tri Vid series among Labor, Merchant, and Technician Caste children).  A well balanced machine of death, the Scientists took the Manticore wholesale and began sourcing a suitable engine for the design.

With the looming retirement of the widely produced Hellbringer Omnimech from production represented a significant source of production material that would be trivial to switch to producing a new main battle tank.    In particular the 325 Fusion XL engine alongside the Hellbringers communications system was not only widely available among lesser clans it still remained in secondary manufacture.

In addition Clan Diamond Shark found the Hermes CT-42 Mk II from its Marauder IIC was a preexisting targeting and tracking system that could be adapted with only additional programming to its proposed new main battle tank.

Thus a Omnitank of 65 tons capable of achieving flank speeds of over 86.4 km/h was born, and in an effort to avoid the fate of the rather lightly armored Hellbringer 11.5 tons of ferro-fiborus armor was applied.  This resulted in tank full capable of soaking a full salvo from an UAC20 in all directions but the rear, but also the front glacias plate almost capable of soaking an additional gauss rifle round.    While not an exceptionally large turret (capable of handling 15 tons of equipment), the designers believed it struck a reasonable balance in terms of mass dedicated to the turret and additional fire power.

Heavily armed, capable of keeping pace with all but the fastest clan heavies, and armed with a third of its mass in Pods the prospective MBT merely required a name.

In a rather cheeky gesture to both the Innersphere and Clan Hell's Horses, the retired Merchant Warriors took the Norse God Loki, master shapeshifter and warrior and applied it to their new design.   After all some of the configurations were entirely unusual and more than a little bit mad.


Capabilities:

With a top speed more than capable of keeping up with all but the fastest Clan Heavies the Loki is well suited for the high paced warfare the Clans prefer, a fair hefty armor load and a solid percentage of its tonnage devoted to weapon systems.  From a design standpoint the critical weakness of the Loki MBT is one common to all combat vehicles.

Heat.

While the square cube root law giveth in terms of how much more effective armor coverage can be on the simpler, smaller shapes of combat vehicles it also takes away.    A much reduced surface area along with an inability to transfer excess heat leaves the Loki unable to make use of double heat sinks thus drastically cutting the usage of advanced energy weapons.

The Prime model demonstrates this with a close to carbon copy of the Manticore's weapon systems are upgraded to Clan standards and applied to the Loki.    Featuring an ER PPC, an LRM 15 with Artemis IV, and a Streak SRM6 the Loki is unable to mount the Medium Laser of the Manticore for one simple reason, it would take 6 tons to mount both the weapon and the required heat sinks.   Instead a front mounted, driver controlled machine gun was mounted alongside a commanders machine gun and an integrated anti-missile system to help defend against enemy missile attacks.

A model features the powerful Gauss Rifle with deep ammo bins (24 rounds), paired up with a Streak SRM6 in the turret.  To discourage anyone attempting to get within the minimum range of the gauss rifle, or to finish off lesser opponents a pair of ER Medium Lasers are front mounted.   All three direct fire weapons are in turn linked into a Targeting Computer to provide highly accurate fire.

B model is a dedicated Anti-Air platform with twin linked LBX-5 autocannons installed in the turret each fed from a bin of Cluster and Slug ammo each.  To discourage any attackers who believe all its fire power is in the turret, a Large Pulse Laser is front mounted to fend off those expecting to exploit a weak point.

C model is where the Madness starts coming into play.   Aimed firmly at the more vicious Clans, the C model or "Crowd control" is designed to roll into urban settings and crush mobs, or the average day in the life of Smoke Jaguars garrison forces  in the Inner Sphere.    The most notable feature of the C Model is the Bulldozer attached to the front of the Loki, all the better to break barricades with alongside the turret mounted LBX5 which is equipped with two tons of cluster ammo and a ton of slug ammo.   To make it even more deadly five machine guns (one in each facing and the turret) and three flamers are mounted (front, left, right) to utterly destroy anyone on foot who isn't in Battle Armor.  An Active Probe lets the Loki sniff out any hidden mines, concealed squads, or those counting on the urban jungle to hide them.     To actually deal with the aftermath of urban fighting three sprayers have been attached to the turret, feed by a two ton tank of flame suppressant foam.  A fluid suction system that feeds from the rear enables the Loki to be feed from any source of water to fight the fires it set off with the equipped flamers.

Remember people can be replaced cheaply with time, the multi billion Kerensky Omni Mech factory not so much.


D model returns to more standard arrangement with inspiration from the Merkava, with twin UAC/5's mounted in the turret alongside a SRM6.  Facing forwards is an LRM 15, giving this variant a great deal of long range fire power.   Feeding this ammo hungry variant  is 60 rounds of UAC5 ammo, 15 volley's of SRM fire, and a mere 8 launches of the LRM's.   Fully capable of running dry in a long engagement this won't matter as much for honorable Trials.

E or the Engineering Model, is built from the ground up to be an effective combat engineering vehicle.   Directly inspired by the challenges Clan Steel Viper faced in the Devil's Baths the E model of the Loki answers them with gusto.   Equipped with a bulldozer blade, heavy bridge laying equipment and a back hoe the Loki E can work all day and night with its searchlight active in dealing with challenging terrain.   The forward mounted Active Probe and rear mounted Remote Sensor Dispenser add another dimension to its capabilities as a combat engineering vehicle.  To deal with any attackers the turret is equipped with an ER Large Laser as its main gun, while mounted in the turret is a SRM 2 (often loaded with Inferno rounds), and a machine gun.    The driver controls another machine gun feed from the same ammo bin as the turret gun.

F model mounts a full range of electronic warfare gear in the form of TAG, ECM and Active Probe, providing its Point mates with both coverage and the ability to call in supporting artillery fire.   Mounting a powerful UAC10 (with 30 rounds of ammo) as its main gun the main, the  gunner has a pair of Medium Pulse Lasers linked to the auto cannon to provide additional close range fire to destroy the Loki's enemies.   To discourage close range attacks a small Pulse Laser is front mounted alongside a Streak SRM4.

G model is an unusual beast that would have never seen the light of day before the Invasion.    Designed with the mission of long duration patrols over great distances the G model of the Loki actually pays a decent amount of attention to both crew comfort and endurance, all be it at the cost of fire power.   Its main weapon is a turret mounted ER Large Laser to provide long range fire power and a great deal of in field endurance, and is accompanied by an ECM suite and a commanders machine gun.   A front mounted active probe  and drivers machine gun ensure the Loki's forward path is clear of obstacles.  On the left and right flanks a Streak SRM 6 is mounted to discourage flank attackers on top of stretching out the single ton of ammo assigned to them.    More interesting however is the powerful communications suite in the turret of the G model, which at 4 tons provides a powerful uplink to orbit and beyond.   To actually accommodate extremely long patrols cunningly built into the nooks, crannies and corners of the Loki are cabinets, cooking and cleaning gear of an Infantry Compartment capable of handling eight people ~ provided they sleep in shifts and have no expectation of privacy at all. A half ton of water and another ton of cargo space are in built inside the Loki on top of whatever gear is stowed on the exterior.   

No bathing facilities are included beyond hot water and a sink, however the toilet doubles as an extra seat with some extremely well padded head rests for use on the move.  The primary complaint thus far is the very limited (100 rounds) ammo for the machine guns which limits the wild game that can be brought down on patrol.   A hitch in the rear however lets the G haul along additional cargo, letting it perform additional logistics duties.   

H model is a Prime variant which boasts an ER Large Laser, a LRM20 with Artemis IV (18 rounds), Streak SRM6 and a commanders machine gun (200),  with an anti missile system (48 rounds) providing additional protection.   The driver again has a front mounted machine gun under his or her control.  This variant was included to cover any shortfalls in the availability of ER PPCs, which are highly popular and effective on actual Mechs.

Overview:
While Clan Diamond Shark may have conceded the Mongrel OmniMech to the ilKhan's
rationalisation, they still had all the requisite parts in place. It didn't
make sense to waste these and as the most expensive of these parts was the
Consolidated 315 XL engine there were limited openings. The decision to fit a
MBT with this kind of fusion reactor opened up a pragmatic choice.

The Grendel inherits its name from the Mongrel's Inner Sphere designation. It's
built on the same site, uses the same armour, electronics and engine, meaning
only the basic chassis and controls have to be specifically built - the Diamond
Shark were able to purchase designs for these based on the long-serving Goblin
medium tank which has been studied carefully for several unsuccessful projects
recently.


Capabilities:
The Grendel is ferociously fast, outpacing even some smaller BattleMechs. The
Clan's edge in speed proved decisive in many actions against the Inner Sphere,
so this is expected to allow the tank to engage and disengage at will against
most comparable units.

Seven and a half tons of ferrofibrous armour will allow the Grendel to survive
two hits from a Gauss Rifle or a Clan PPC to any aspect except the rear. This
provides reasonable protection for the crew - the Diamond Sharks have
experimented with assigning technicans to drive but with most configurations
having some hull mounted weapons, at least two warriors are needed. The Diamond
Sharks can manage this by recalling ex-Warriors from their Merchant Caste but
other Clans may find it harder.

The most common configurations for the Grendel both use a heavy autocannon in
the turret. The LB 10-X of the Prime is complemented by a medium laser whereas
the Grendel A assigns extra tonnage to ammunition for the Ultra AC/10 - this
also means the crew can be two Technicans and one Warrior in the turret if
manpower needs demand.

As an alternative, the Grendel B mounts two lasers in the nose and a pair of
turret-mounted LRM launchers. While this gives quite impressive long range
firepower, the limited reloads make the configuration most favoured for
traditional Clan Trials.

In C configuration the Grendel has a Large Pulse Laser for essentially
unlimited long range firepower. At close quarters, three missile launchers fire
SRMs. While the ammunition bins are again limited, Streak technology ensures
shots won't be wasted.

Small update. I am working on an entry myself with Irose based upon something you may recognize. Its looking good. Not sure if I can qualify for my own contest but it could be a future Clan product.  ;)

Still waiting on fluff from masterarminas and Abele. Plus I hope there are more designs on the way.

OVERVIEW:
When the Quicksilver Vehicle Expansion was approved Ice Hellion researchers began combing through design archives for inspiration. While accessing the Goliath Scorpion database they discovered ancient blueprints for a Star League Main Battle Tank that pre-dated the Exodus. Based on the Magi Tank this concept never took form because of the Amaris Coup which derailed any further development. Hellion scientists realized that there were plenty of cached Magi still with the Clans thanks to the recent Flurry mobilization. As they converted existing models for modularization the Clan attempted to secure financial backing. Early attempts to court the Hell’s Horses paid dividends when that Clan agreed to back the design which the Hellions’ dubbed the Proioxis from the Greek spirit of onrush and battlefield pursuit.

CAPABILITIES:
   For the base design the Proioxis uses the Redline 350XL which was fast becoming an Ice Hellion staple. This allowed three additional tons of Clan ferro fibrous armor to mounted increasing the new model’s protection well past its progenitor. Both the advanced armor and electronic systems came from the Ishtar Heavy Fire Support Tank which was already in production. This sped the development and manufacturing of the Main Battle Tank into Combat Trails.
   The Primary Configuration was based off the original design whose main gun was a Particle Projection Cannon. The Hellions upgraded that to an Extended Range model and double the Long Range Missile racks which they linked to Artemis IV FCS for increased accuracy creating a deadly opponent at far off distances.
   Alternate Configuration A on the other hand concentrates on short range firepower with its massive Ultra Autocannon/20 delivering enormous damage. Backed by a highly precise Streak SRM 6 these weapon systems have tremendous offensive potential. They are backed by four Extended Range Small Lasers arrayed around the tank to deter infantry or close range threats.
    Alternate Configuration B is often called a headhunter or sniper tank thanks to its Gauss Cannon linked to a Targeting Computer. This main gun is meant to “cap” BattleMech opponents quickly and reserves its dual ER Medium Lasers along with three Streak SRM 2s for secondary targets.
   City fighting is the specialty of Alternate Configuration C with its massive LB-20X Autocannon which knock out threats large or small depending on the type of ammunition used. Two SRM 6 racks while range limited allow the use of special munitions which can come in handy during urban warfare. These systems combined with four Machine Guns and three Flamers spread over the vehicle create a deadly opponent for any close quarter combat.
   Alternate Configuration D is the first two main gun option for this Main Battle Tank. Pairing an Ultra Autocannon/10 and an Extended Range Large Laser makes for a solid ranged attacker. A single LRM 5 also supplements the Tank’s distant punch while two Anti-Missile Systems, mounted front and back, add to its defense.
   Configuration E is fitted for electronic warfare with a TAG, an ECM Suite, and an Active Probe. The main gun of this Alternate layout is a single LB-10X Autocannon backed by three Streak SRM 4s.
   The Flak or anti-aircraft Configuration is armed with a Large Pulse Laser and a LB-5X Autocannon. These weapon systems linked to a Targeting Computer and Active Probe are augmented by two LRM 5s creating a potent foe for enemy fighter craft.
   Alternate G is considering experimental by the Clans right now. Star Adder is perhaps the most keen on testing this Artillery Tank with its Thumper Cannon providing unmatched battlefield range. With a Medium Pulse Laser and three Small Pulse Lasers for close in defense this rare configuration may never see widespread use.
   Alternate H and I Configurations transform this Tank into a Missile Carrier. The first features six Streak SRM 6s for incredible close range damage while the second has three LRM 20s for solid reach. Given the Combat Vehicles intended role it is unlikely that these options would become common.

DEPLOYMENT:
   Ice Hellion are currently evaluating the first models in their Flurry Clusters and depending upon the results of the Quicksilver Trails could expand the reach of Combat Vehicles rapidly. In a move that shocked many the Khan has already ordered the activation of a second line armored unit, the 1st Blizzard Cluster. Despite resistance from the rank and file rumors are already circulating that the Clan is considering the creation of new front line armored units called Avalanche Clusters. The good performance of Flurry units after the Hellion’s Fury, the creation of new Clan OmniVehicles, and the Hellion’s need for more combatants may create the perfect storm that now opponent can hope to defeat.
   Ironically the Hell’s Horses may actually field the greatest number of the Main Battle Tank thanks to their early investment which resulted in a majority of first run purchases. Rapid modularization of existing models and priority upgrading of their front line tank force will likely push them past the Hellions in the short term. Clan Wolf and Star Adder have also purchased a few samples although they have not yet deployed any in front line service preferring second line testing to rash modernization.

Well when I asked everyone to stand and deliver their best effort for the Clan Main Battle Tank I had no idea how good you were going to make it. Sure I was a little disappointed that no Ultralights were thrown into the pot but forget about that. We had nine exceptional competitors by six different designers, a high water mark for vehicle contests I believe. Three were Ice Hellion designs and six were Diamond Shark. Many entries were based on existing Clan ‘Mechs and man were they ever good. With more snow on the way let us get this review started.

9. Janus (drakensis)
This 90 ton Ice Hellion entry based on the Star League Alacorn was more of an assault tank. Its mass and 270XL Engine (3/5) are the two largest factors for its placement here. Really just lacks the movement to keep pace with the main Clan battle line. Keeping in mind I called for all sorts of Extra Light entries to take advantage of this unique Vehicle Trail it does have a place here. With 17 tons of ferro fibrous (326 factor) this assault tank has unmatched protection exceeding even BattleMechs. I generally do not like Omnis be they ‘Mechs, Fighters, or Vehicles that use a lot of fixed equipment. With a Streak SRM 6, LRM 20, and Anti Missile System all locked in this is an example. I hope you will consider a redesign for our next contest as massive entries like the Janus will be suited. Just remember no XL engine next time around.

8. Manitou II (Abele)
I really wanted to see this proof of concept design by the Coyotes which was likely put forward by the Diamond Sharks. The original 55 ton is still perhaps the most intriguing idea to me given it would tie three combat types (Mech, Fighter, and Tank) together for a Clan. Talk about easing logistics. The second version presented here by Abele is intriguing although the odd tonnage may hamper production by increasing design time. With such an irregular mass like 68 tons who knows what effect it could have. I do like the design however the 275XL Engine (4/6) does not provide enough power to keep pace with Clan front line troops. With 11.5 tons of ferro fibrous (220 armor) it has very good protection for a heavy vehicle. You utilize a 2.5 ton turret (25 ton capacity) and 30 tons of pod space for weapons and equipment very well. Like your Primary Configuration which can double up on any Clan level three tank weaponry (Gauss, Ultra AC/20, LB-X 20) for main guns. Great firepower and a nice design especially for the Coyotes who may favor such offense over speed. Unfortunately for the Clan Main Battle Tank I was looking for something a little faster. Nice job though.

7. Abraxas (JPArbiter)
This 65 ton Tracked Omni-Tank is taken directly from Contest #34 and is based on the Star League Marksman. I have no doubt that Blood Spirit and Fire Mandrill would be the driving force behind this 260 Fusion (4/6) powered entry. Their desire to see a standard engine when compared to the expense of an Extra Light version would in my estimation lead them to obtain the design from the Hell’s Horses and get it into this competition likely by way of Diamond Shark. The Spirits have established a special relationship with the Sharks during the Trails which could easily facilitate such an arrangement. The Horses would not object and they do get along with Kindraa Payne plus they could even try out their XL version here. So it is really a win win for all involved. Would not cost the Sharks much to enter it as the funding and equipment comes from other Clans. I would have liked it better if JP had said that himself however and updated the design for this contest. Ultimately I still feel that this 4/6 entry is a little too slow for the Clan Main Battle Tank which I had envisioned as at least a 5/8 design.

6. Uller (Abele)
This 95 ton Ice Hellion entry really got my attention with its impressive speed. Using a 380 XL Engine (4/6) this massive OmniTank is part Executioner (Gladiator) even though it is based on the Star League Alacorn and Puma Tanks. Its speed and configurations are based closely on that premier Clan Assault Mech creating a terrifying battlefield opponent. With 14.5 tons of ferro fibrous (278 factor) armor it is very well protected and 32 tons of pod space allows for some devastating weaponry. D is probably my favorite configuration with a Large Pulse accompanying two Autocannons for some nice long range fire power. At the end of the day though this big guy is just a bit too big for this trail. Not gonna hold speed against you here because you max out maneuverability in this monster. I really hope to see this one again for our Assault Tank challenge just remember no XL engines next time around.

5. Loki (fitzgerald)
It was good to get fitzgerald back in the design ring once again with this 65 ton Diamond Shark Main Battle Tank. Turning the Hellbringer into a Tank and using its InnerSphere designation works on so many levels. Great name and concept. You had excellent fluff which accurately hit on the merchant Clan’s concerns, utilized existing components, and was not that crazy at all. Well at least to me. The 325XL Engine (5/8) provided excellent speed and 11.5 tons of ferro fibrous (220 factor) gave solid protection. A 1.5 ton turret (15 ton capacity) and 24 tons of pod space offered some awful nice configurations. Primary really harkens back to the Manticore upon which it was built. However other configurations were a little over board like C for crowd control which utilized a lot of unorthodox equipment such as Bulldozer blade, three Sprayers, and a liquid suction system. For a Main Battle Tank this was a bit much for me. I felt the same way about E which was also useful but on the Clan Main Battle Tank? Also basing the Loki on the Manticore was not a bad choice but the weight difference (+5 ton) prevented any straight conversions. This would require some additional design work and add time to manufacturing. Nice try fitz, one that I considered for the top spot.

4. Grendel (drakensis)
Another one I really considered for the top spot especially because of the light weight nature of the Clan Armored Force thus far was the 45 ton Grendel. This Diamond Shark entry turned their former OmniMech into a OmniTank much like fitzgerald did with the Loki. Using the Goblin Medium Tank as a basis was also a real solid idea given that it had been trotted out so many times before. The Consolidated 315XL Fusion Engine (7/11) provided unmatched speed during this contest. Using 7.5 tons of ferro fibrous (144 factor) it provided good protection for its 3 man crew. This is another selling point for the Sharks especially if revised single warrior commanded tank crews become a fact for the Clans. A 1 ton turret (10 ton capacity) and 13 tons of pod space allow the use of class two main guns (Ultra AC/10, LB-10X ACs) for Clan tanks which Primary and Alternate Configuration A both utilize. I also liked C but would have set up two of the Streak SRM 4s in the turret. It ably filled the 45 ton design gap that currently existed in Clan Vehicles but ultimately I decided it was more of a Medium Tank. Very tempting though drak!

3. Shiva (masterarminas)
This 65 ton Diamond Shark entry with help from the Hell’s Horses and Wolves is a masterpiece. Tied for the best fluff with Fitzgerald and with the second best name in the competition this Clan Main Battle Tank based on the Rommel/Patton Tanks was extremely well done. Loved the Falcon overreaction to the design followed by the even better Smoke Jaguar threat. Using the 325XL Engine (5/8) from the Hellbringer was inspired as were other components gleaned from various in stock sources. With 11.5 tons of ferro fibrous (220 factor) the design offered superior protection. Using a 2 ton turret (20 ton capacity) with only 16 tons of pod space was a little curious to me. Might have trimmed the turret slightly and altered the configurations according. Also I did not love the fixed LRM 15 with Artemis because it limits the Omni nature of the overall design. Some assertions in the fluff I just did not agree with like the Star Adders did not use Vehicles but those are mostly small potatoes. Great design overall, good enough for third place in my opinion.

2. Proioxis (Takiro/Irose)
This 70 ton Ice Hellion entry was a special homage to my very first vehicle design contest for BattleTech Shattered Dawn. The Coblitz Main Battle Tank by Irose was the winner of that challenge and you can still find it in Fanbook 1 – Field Manual Terran Republic 2785. With a vehicle hole at this weight class for the Clans I contacted Irose and he was gracious enough to advice on the Clan redesign. While I did the refluff the original design was his as is the name. We agreed upon the Ice Hellions and with this Tank using the Redline 350XL (5/8) Engine which they had used twice successfully during Quicksilver it was a natural fit. The 12.5 tons of ferro-fibrous (240 factor) was among the components culled from the Ishtar which was currently in production by the Hellions. Based on the Magi which I feel would exist in sufficient numbers with the Clans it carried 23 tons of pod space for weapons and equipment. With a 1.5 ton turret (15 ton capacity) it was well suited to deploy Clan level three main guns (Gauss Rifle, Ultra AC/20, and LB-20X AC) as I have called them. I really liked the name which Irose came up with but others were more sexy. Fluff is definitely a little rushed with a bunch of grammatical errors and I forgot to post the original kitbash by Siden Pryde. Still a top notch entry but it may have been edged out.

1. Yen Lo Wang (drakensis)
The 75 ton lead off design by the Diamond Sharks was a home run by drakensis. It was going to be hard to overcome one of my favorite BattleTech tanks, the Von Luckner. With this as a basis and the best name (which the Jade Falcons would lovingly despise) in the contest the entry is just too good to pass up. The availability of the 375XL Engine (5/8) from the Mad Cat is not in doubt and gives the design superior mobility especially when compared to its predecessor. While 9.5 tons of ferro-fibrous (182 factor) is not the greatest protection offered it is solid. With 22.5 tons of pod space (nearly a third of its mass reserved for weapons and equipment) and a 2 ton turret (20 ton capacity) this design packs a good punch. The configurations were acceptable even though I prefer a 1.5 ton turret capacity for a more optimized approach. Not the best fluff but you had a solid straight forward presentation. I would love to use pieces from other entries and talk about the 5 person crew more. Great job drakensis!

Wow such an excellent contest! It was not an easy decision at all for me. The top five could have all won this competition and still may appear in some form with the Clans in years to come. Really such a fantastic effort by everyone involved. Thank you all so much for bringing you’re a game to the Clan Main Battle Tank competition. Was a good one, probably the best yet. 1.  The fixed LRM masses 4.5 tons (including Artemis IV) which is added to the pod-space and mounted in the turret.  Sorry you didn't like the fixed LRM-15, but it makes sense in giving the design a long-ranged missile weapon in every configuration with good endurance (24 missile salvoes).  Sure, I could have left it out and went with 23.5 tons of pod-space, but with the no-heat, low-mass nature of the missile system, it was really the best bang for the buck.

2.  "Does not really use vehicles" refers to Clan Goliath Scorpion and not Clan Star Adder.

1.  The fixed LRM masses 4.5 tons (including Artemis IV) which is added to the pod-space and mounted in the turret.  Sorry you didn't like the fixed LRM-15, but it makes sense in giving the design a long-ranged missile weapon in every configuration with good endurance (24 missile salvoes).  Sure, I could have left it out and went with 23.5 tons of pod-space, but with the no-heat, low-mass nature of the missile system, it was really the best bang for the buck.

You could swap the LRM 15 with Artemis for a Streak SRM or two depending upon configuration for certain scenarios. I like an Omni to have as many possibilities as possible.  :D

2.  "Does not really use vehicles" refers to Clan Goliath Scorpion and not Clan Star Adder.

Ah, that makes more sense then but my complaints with this design were small potatoes. I think you will see the Shiva in one form or another in my BT universe here eventually.

As a bonus, here's the original 55-ton Manitou

Interesting, more of an IFV than a tank. I you strip out the infantry bay and the machine guns a nasty 23 tons of pod space could have made for a very formidable challenger.

 I felt the same way about E which was also useful but on the Clan Main Battle Tank?

Much like its inspiration the crazy came from the configs

The C for Crowd control's unorthodox equipment was built around the idea that its being deployed in situ after the Touman has won a planet.   Basically designed to help put down revolts the Loki - C can break barricades (bulldozer blade), cause fires, put out fires  (liquid suction & sprayers), and fire into crowds with buckshot.   

In short it provides the local garrison commander options for dealing with unruly IS populations that are chafing against Clan rule along with containing any blazes that occur along the way.

Loki - E was based on the idea that Clan's aren't bringing along large numbers of support troops.   While it would rarely see active combat the Loki - E lets the Star Commander / Colonel keep his armor busy accomplishing engineering duties without having to hump along an extra dropship

Or in the case of the Devil's Baths (which I did reference XD ) if some IS Surat's are attempting to use the terrain as a method to control the battlefield the Loki - E can roll out and go "Sup.    You counted on that swamp?    Guess who just turned it into a golf course"

Well the Abraxas made a showing and was the one Fusion powered design.
