Orthrus Assault Suit
« on: March 07, 2013, 01:22:32 PM »

One of the many Battlefield innovations that had passed Elysium over in it’s isolation from the Inner Sphere was the MagShot Gauss Rifle.  When the EDF was exposed to this weapon in 3078 the numerous battlefield applications took hold immediately.  Though development of the Magshot (and later Gungir Heavy Gauss Rifle) for use in the M-12 Puma Force Application Vehicle was nearly immediate, Nevermind Industries engineers could not seem to break the technical barrier needed to perfect the Mag Shot for Battle Armor deployment.  Stumped to the point where they bowed out, the specs and prototypes were granted to DeLorean, along with several Battle Armor equipped examples that led to the creation of the Orthrus Battle Suit.

Much like the Marian Ravager, the Orthrus was built for survivability at all cost, necessitating an assault caliber autocannon or massed fire to even stand a chance of disabling the suit.  Ground up designed hydraulic assisted myomers permit the Orthus to travel at approximately 21 Kilometers per hour.  While this speed is relatively sluggish on a battlemech field, when scaled down to an infantry dominated field, this makes the Orthrus an unstoppable metal tyrant capable of consuming an infantry squad with zero effort.  While the MagShot is the suits primary offensive weapon, it is supplemented by a heavy Battle Claw with an under slung antipersonnel mount.  An array of advanced sensor equipment assist the suit in built up urban environments in avoiding ambushes.

Most curious of all is the inclusion of a jump booster pack, despite a lack of jump jets.  The booster is lighter than the thrusters needed for sustained jump capability though extremely bulky.  In a short term battle situation, this gave the Orthrus the ability to perform 30 meter long hops, traversing built up terrain with ease, though the strain placed on the equipment is immense, necessitating intense maintenance between sorties.

Currently there are no variations of the Orthrus, though DeLorean is heavily investigating using the Gungir Heavy Gauss Rifle to boost the suits firepower.  Clan Sea Fox has also presented both the Anti Personnel Gauss Rifle and Battle Armor LB-X as options, though Cost of Clan Equipment may preclude both from mass Delpoyment.
