Blitzkrieg
« on: May 17, 2010, 01:59:09 PM »

Overview:
The Blitzkrieg is produced on a number of planets in the backwater area of Lyran space. The orginal owner of the design went bankrupt shorty after the design was not well received by the LCAF's military which only ordered a limited number. The company quickly went under but the company's factories where keep in operation by the planetary governments they where on. The governments not wanting the factories to close took the design and marketed it around to a number of lyran arms dealers which resulted in a increased production requests. The shady lyran merchants sold the craft to whoever could afford them including enemy's of there own state. This resulted in a number of planetary governments being removed by elements of the LCAF but strangly nothing was done to stop the factories. The mercenary market is now the crafts largest buyer (some say the pirates are a close second) but there appears to be mixed reaction to the design as its cheap enough to be gotten in large numbers by low tier units well the upper tier units dislike its egg shell protection and short combat endurance due to lack of on board reloads for its main weapons.

Capabilities:
The design was built around the four rocket launchers mounted on either side of the narrow two man cockpit. Theses launchers are simple and easy to replace and reload. The craft fires them return to the rearming point land press one button for each launcher and it releases from the craft to allow the ground crew to push it away and bring up a new launcher and attach them to the craft and its once more combat ready.[ Well it does sound simple the crews found out the hard way it wasn't that fast and for this reason many military units disliked the Blitzkrieg's main weapon system which had longer rearm times then they where lead to believe.] The orginal design mounted nothing but rocket launchers(10 total) but this was changed to take into account the need for longer combat endurance and to make easier to reload the remaining launchers. The twin SRM-4's mounted far out to the left and right of the copters wings are usually armed with inferno as well as standard ammo. Well the nose mounted LRM-5 was added to give the design a weapon with some range but its usually replaced for additional launchers or switched out for another SRM and additional ammo.

Interesting design and fluff, though I feel that SRMs are a bad idea on VTOLs.  The mass is better spent upgrading the engine to a 130 ICE (9/14 movement) and the LRM-5 to an LRM-10.

unlike most copters the blitz is a all or nothing assault copter ment to close and nuke light units its not really there to stand off and shot. I know the thoughts on the SRM's and LRM's but kinda felt strange when the orginal design was nothing but RL-10's,15's,and 20's so I changed it a bit to have something that isn't a one shot wonder but still have the power to close fast enough on most recon mech's and slam it with 2-4 RL's and hopefully blowing it to pieces and then returning to its resupply point for more RL's and doing it again.

Its cousin the Hind-24 is a Yellow Jacket with a RAC/2 2tns of ammo and one hell of alot of RL's(7 RL 15's)

If you're looking for a copter to close with light mechs and bombard them I would just go with all rocket launchers- you don't really need the endurance and it would encourage pilots to hit the enemy and get the hell out of Dodge before they can return fire.  Have an SRM launcher encourages the pilot to stay and duke it out, which probably results in a dead helicopter.

Not that familiar with Rocket Launchers technology.

Not that familiar with Rocket Launchers technology.

They are basically what the old one shot SRM/LRM launchers should have been - lightweight single shot weapons.  They are really good for VTOLs, fast strike vehicles or light recon mechs- they have a fairly heavy punch for the mass and are best used in either hit and run attacks -hit the enemy and return to base for a reload.  In the case of light mechs they can serve as last resort weapon in case they get trapped behind enemy lines.

RL -10's are .5tns   max range 18
RL-15 are 1tn        max range 15
RL-20 are 1.5 tons max range 12

They are nice like Irose says. On units doing hit and run they are really nasty take a 20tn mech and give it 3-9 RL-15 given the life of most light mechs theses things give them a really big hammer to smack things and then run away. Peg hover tank remove SRM's replace with RL's now u can say who's ur Daddy to the atlas it runs upto and unloads 8 RL-15's on . Those are the evil things u can do with them.
