Snake Series Hovertanks
« on: May 09, 2013, 06:51:49 PM »

I already posted the LTV 5 previously, an upgrade of the Primitive LTV-4 Hovertank.  noting of course that the LTV-5 and Scimitar Hovercraft use the same art, I thought "Why Not" and set about creating new 50 Ton LTVs meant to be upgrades of the Saladin, Scimitar, and Saracen.

First the LTV-7 "Rattler" so named because of the sound of the RAC 5.  Taking the form of a dedicated tank destroyer, the strategic analysts of the EDF determined that more often then not a combat vehicle was disabled not through overwhelming damage, but through rapid multiple strikes disabling or destroying a vehicles critical systems.  when creating thier own fast tank destroyer for the EDF, Deussedorf Evil Incorporated compromised between fire rate and hitting power, utlizing a 44mm Rotary Autocannon.  prioritizing crew protection for what could easily be a flying bomb, CASE was installed to channel any detonations through the rear and roof of the tank.

the resulting vehicle out ranged the classic Saladin Hovertank, and arguably increased range and survivability of the succession wars vehicle, despite the size increase it can also still be carried within a light vehicle bay as well, easing transport.

The Spitter is a saracen rebuild using even better MML system

The Elysian love of the MML system when they caught up with the inner sphere was immediate, and they quickly went about replacing almost every "twin missile" mech and vehicle they had in thier inventory with the dual purpose launchers.  DEI already cranking out Asp Hovertanks at a rapid rate, took a page out of Scarborough industies lighter copies of their primitive forebears and went about replacing the Cannon turret with a Missile support version.

the "Spitter" LTV-6 was not nearly the success, and shows the company was gunning after Capitals more then they were in creating an effective combat vehicle.  while the paired MML 9s project almost twice the LRMs as the classic saracen, the lack of ammunition is a serious concern.  the single ton of SRM ammo likewise can be deplted quickly in intense combat.  finally despite posessing weapons that could readily exploit the C3 System mounted in the Asp, the Spitter lacks such a module, causing many complaints among EDF tankers.

regardless the EDF purchased many Spitters, approximatly one for every three Asps in service.

and for review, the LTV-5 ASP

The LTV 4 hovertank is arguably the mother of all combat hovercraft, despite the first combat Hover vehicles appearing in the late 20th century.  so reliable was the vehicle that it was used all they way through the Amaris Coup and second Succession Wars, despite being manufactured to a lesser standard then "Modern" combat Vehicles of the Era.  LTV-4s made up the majority of the EDF Armor corps before the arrival of the Flying Cloud, so taking the chassis and upgrading them was not a difficult process at all.

the first upgrade was a swap to a fusion engine, the lighter weight and lack of needed power amplifiers as a result permitted an ERPPC and cooling system to be installed, doubling the vehicles effective range, and a C3 slave permitted quick and effective coordination of fire among companies.  the upgraded LTV-5 makes up the bulkof the hovercraft corps, representing about 50 % of any company.  it is expected that it will continue to serve admirably in the EDF for some time

Where's the C3 Master version of a 'Snake'? There has to be one with all of them having Slaves. With the Spitter, dropping down to twin MML-7s, would solve the ammo problem and would allow for C3 slave and up to two more tons of ammo (3 tons LRM and 2 tons SRM would be a nice mix)

Would be coordinated by a Master carrying mech or other vehicles...  Front Line Hover tanks should not  be sporting Masters.

By demand, a modified LTV-M C3 Master Vehicle...

LTV-M Asp

Mass: 50 tons
Tech Base: Inner Sphere
Motive Type: Hovercraft
Rules Level: Tournament Legal
Era: Clan Invasion
Tech Rating/Era Availability: E/X-X-E
Production Year: 0
Cost: 5,578,333 C-Bills
Battle Value: 821

Power Plant:  215 Fusion Engine
Cruise Speed: 97.2 km/h
Flanking Speed: 151.2 km/h
Armor:  Standard Armor
Armament:
    1  PPC
    1  SRM-4
    1  C3 Computer (Master)
Manufacturer:
    Primary Factory:
Communications System:
Targeting and Tracking System:

Overview:
The LTV Hovertank is a relic going as far back as the Reunification War, and
has kept a low profile as a relatively cheap to produce and easy to maintain
militia vehicle until it was outshined by the Scimitar hover tank.  While
isolated, Elysium managed to keep the LTV as part of its militias and shows no
sign of ceasing production.

Capabilities:
It took the installation of a fusion engine to make a new LTV viable.  The swap
saved so much mass that the PPC was upgraded and the top speed of the vehicle
was increased to match the DCMS second generation Scimitar.  Durability however
remains the same as its SLDF progenitor.

Deployment:
The first unofficial deployment of an LTV-5 was on Terra itself as part of the
Lioness Combat Teams participation in Operation SCOUR.  By then they had
purchased a full company of the Retrotech vehicles and swapped their engines
out for salvaged fusion plants from various sources.  During the Battle of
Kansas City the upgraded LTV-4s continuously kept the escorts of Cameron St
Jamais on their toes and effectively prevented their mechs from crossing the
Missouri River for over a day.

Ground up developed LTV-5s were gifted almost immediately to Auximite Worlds as
a gesture of Military goodwill, and the local defense forces have used their
PPCs to great effect against local bandits.  A pair of the tanks was patrolling
along the dunes of XXX when they got a call to responded to a water convoy
being hijacked by a raiding band called the Shalashaska.  By time contact was
made the Dromdary tanker was well in the hands of the raiders.  Using their
PPCs massive range advantage the LTVs were capable of eviscerating the age of
war period equipment being used and bottlenecked the raiders long enough for
infantry to respond and reclaim the stolen water.  The crew of both vehicles
received land grants in honor of their counter raid.

Variants:
Currently being tested is the LTV-M Hovertank which the PPC to a standard model
in order to mount a C3 Master.  Reactions from the field are mixed.

I like it. Mobile, nice punch for weaponry and the C3 Master is an interesting add. Makes for some good coordinated pack assaults.
