Taurian Tanks (For the Memories . . . )
« on: August 09, 2011, 01:06:07 PM »

Sorry, I couldn't resist the temptation, but perhaps I should have!   ;D

I plan on posting a few designs for Taurian tracked, hover, wheeled, and VTOL units over the next few days; these are all based in large part on the designs I had posted in the past--that are now floating out in the internet ether somewhere (out there, someones reading a file!).

Sorry, again, I seem to be on a musical kick today.   ;D

Anyway, they are based on those designs, but have since been improved, thanks in large part to advice received from Takiro, Irose, MechRat, and others.  For this post, I shall start with the Jaguar main-battle tank, a 55-ton tracked design.  Enjoy!

==Overview:==
The Jaguar-class main battle tank was one of the most common Taurian tank
designs encountered during the Reunification Wars.  Although this tank massed
just 55 tons, it carried virtually the same firepower as the mdoern Lyran
Patton tank on a chassis ten tons lighter and 21.6 kph faster, albeit at the
cost of four-and-a-half tons of armor plating.  In addition, the Jaguar
carries a one-ton infantry compartment in the rear of the vehicle, allowing
this tank to transport a Taurian demi-squad of 5 infantry men into
battle--giving a Maniple of Taurian tanks the integral support of an entire
platoon of 30 infantry troopers.

This combination of speed, firepower, infantry support, and armor came as a
complete surprise to SLDF and Davion troops--none of whom had ever fought
Taurian ground forces (with the exception of a handful of Marines engaged in
various skirmishes over the years).  The Jaguar hearkened back to the days of
old when the tank was the king of the battlefield, and its low, sinister
profile and quiet operation allowed the TDF to surprise SLDF and AFFS troopers
time and again.

Even on the defensive, when its high rate of speed was not vital, the Jaguar's
heavy armor protection, firepower, and integral infantry made assaulting these
hasty fortifications extremely dangerous for invading forces.  However, as the
war continued year after year, and more and more Taurian industry and
resources were lost, the supply of new Jaguars eventually slowed to a trickle.
In addition, the loss of transport ships made delivering the new tanks a
difficult proposistion.

In the years just before the Hyades itself came under seige, new Jaguars were
being produced at only one factory outside the nebula--on New Vandenberg.
Having nearly three full years of production available for its defense, New
Vandenberg managed to field twenty-six regiments of Jaguars--but this was not
enough against the scorched-earth tactics of General Forlough and the orbiting
SLDF warships.

After the conclusion of the War, the victorious SLDF attempted to destroy
every blueprint, schematic, and database that held any information on the
Jaguar--they almost managed to succeed.  One computer data-core, uncovered
from a hidden cache in 3003 on New Vandenberg is the only known source of
information on the Jaguar--although the Taurians believe that an incomplete
copy in SLDF hands made it way to the Lyrans and provided the basis for their
own Rommel and Patton designs.

This new-yet-old Jaguar began production in 3011 at seven factories on New
Vandenberg, Sterope, Perdition, Pinard, Taurus, Samantha, and Jamestown and is
rapidly taking its place as the king of Taurian armored units.  The TDF hopes
that by 3030 all of their tracked armored formations will receive new built
Jaguars to replace their current mish-mash of various tank classes.

==Overview:==
The 25-ton Shrike is a heavy VTOL used extensively the TDF during the
Reunification War, and recently rediscovered and placed in production by the
modern TDF under Protector Thomas Calderon.  This agile little chopper is
manned by just two crewmembers, but is able to carry either a demi-squad of 5
jump infantry troopers or 1.5 tons of ton of cargo in its internal bay.

Armament consists of two LRM-5 launchers, each with its own ammunition
magazine for twenty-four salvoes of ten missiles.  While this the only fixed
armament, the Shrike is able to carry up to four one-shot rocket pods (each
with ten rockets) beneath it two stubby wings.  These weapons reduce the
maximum speed of the Shrike to 183.6 kilometers per hour, but once they have
been fired and the empty pods jettisoned, increases to 194.4 kph.

In addition the internal cargo/troop bay, the Shrike is able to life a
sling-load of cargo massing to 50-tons in total, although such a heavy load
reduces maximum speed to a mere 54 kilometers per hour.  A 25-ton load will
only reduce the Shrike's speed to 97.2 kilometers per hour.  All sling-loads
can be dropped by the pilot if atmospheric or combat conditions require the
load to be released; this can occur at any speed or altitude.  However, it
should be noted that when delivering a sling load, the VTOL slows to a hover
and gently lowers the cargo to the ground before releasing the cables.
Dropping the cargo from even moderate heights and low-speeds risks damaging or
destroying the cargo, but taking this risk is somes required.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
==Overview:==
The Fox is one of the finest hovertanks produced in the Taurian Concordat.
Massing 35-tons, the design uses a 105-rate DAV fusion engine to acheive a
maximum speed of 129.6 kilometers per hour.  Crew consists of three personnel:
a driver, a gunner, and a vehicle commander, and the Fox has a rear infantry
compartment that is able to carry up to 5 infantry troopers (a Taurian
demi-squad).

Armor protection is relatively light, with just five tons of armor, but both
the front and turret facings are able to resist a single Class 20 autocannon
hit, while the rear can stop a PPC bolt.  The right and left sides are each
able to stop three medium laser hits from penetrating as well.

All armament is concentrated in the turret and consists of a Large Laser, a
Machine-gun with 100 shots, and two SRM-4 launchers, each with a ton of ammo
giving the Fox a total of twenty-five salvoes of eight missile each.

The original design called for the use of a medium laser in place of the
large, and a heavier engine that would have allowed the Fox to attain a speed
of 162 kilometers per hour.  However, the TDF strategy board prefered having a
heavier and longer-ranged weapon, even at the expense of nearly 35 kph in
speed.

Still, the Fox can match pace with a Locust over open terrain and maintain
that speed over fairly calm bodies of water--and it far outguns the venerable
Star League design and carries more armor!  TDF armor crews assigned to a Fox
or similar fast hovercraft consider themselves the elite of the Armor Corps.
These flamboyent vehicle crews are loved by the general population, many of
whom grow up wanting to be the commander of a TDF hover-sled.

Like the fighter pilots of Old Earth's First World War, the hovercraft crews
of the TDF are flashy and live life to the fullest, because they know they
risk their lives ever time by button up their tank and head into combat.
Still, that doesn't stop hundreds of youths from volunteering to join the
rank-and-file crews of the TDFs Foxes each and every month.

The fourth vehicle recovered from the New Vandenberg cache was the 55-ton
Napoleon Mobile Howitzer.  This fast artillery piece carries a light Thumper
howitzer with 20 shots.  The only additional weapon is a machine-gun.  Both
weapons are mounted in a turret.  Only four tons of armor makes this vehicle
rather vulnerable, but the TDF (both in present day and during the
Reunfiication War) considered it adequete for what is primarily a rear-area
support vehicle.

Unlike most other TDF vehicles of the Reunification War, the Napoleon does not
carry an infantry contingent.  These vehicles are deployed in independent
Maniples that are assigned to armor battalions and regiments on an as needed
basis.  Full batteries or even battalions of Napoleons are only rarely
encountered, and only on the major Concordat worlds.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
==Overview:==
The final vehicle is the 10-ton wheeled STAG, which most people do not realize
stands for Single-crew Tactical Assault Gun-car.  The Stag is a six-wheeled
vehicle crewed by one trooper.  It is capable of achieving a ground speed of
97.2 kilometers per hour and carries an impressive load of ordnance for such a
light vehicle:  a SRM-6 launcher with 15 salvoes and a machine-gun with 100
shots, both fixed forward (the SRM to the crewman's right and the MG to his
left).  Only two tons of armor are provided, but the low-cost of this vehicle
allows the TDF to field vast numbers.

Introduced late in the Reunification War, the Stag was fielded by training an
entire Infantry Regiment in the operation of these vehicles, and deployed in
Infantry-sized formations (10-vehicle squads and 30-vehicle platoons).  On New
Vandenberg, these new vehicles and their doctrine caused signficant casualties
among the Star League forces, but this was also the last battle in which the
Stag participated.

Although thousands were produced within the Hyades Cluster, Marantha
Calderon's surrender prevented these vehicles and their crews from engaging
the SLDF on the Taurian homeworlds.  Production resumed in 3004, although the
modern TDF has deployed these units in traditional light armor formations
(with 6 per Maniple, three Maniples per company) rather than the infantry
based formations used during the War.

However, rumors do suggest that some elite units are outfitting one or more of
their infantry companies with STAGs and using them in a manner similar to that
pioneered by the TDF during the Reunification War.

The Skyraider is a conventional fighter that the TDF uses for ground support.
VSTOL-capable, this fifty ton fighter is able to deliver ten tons of bombs
onto the battlefield and is also capable of conducting strafing runs.
However, like all conventional fighters it is very vulnerable to hostile
ground fire or fighter interception.  Skyraiders were quite common early in
the Reunification War, but were quickly disposed of by SLDF forces once they
drove Taurian aerospace fighters from the sky.

Today, the Skyraider has been placed in limited production to give every
Taurian armored regiment a measure of air support.

There are currently two types of formations that use the STAG.

The first is a Light Armored Battalion that is part and parcel of the Armored Corps.  Roughly half of the STAGs produced to date are organized in this model.  However, it is likely that no additional Light Armored Battalions will be built and all future STAGs will be organized according to scheme 2.

Scheme 2 is designed to augment Concordat Infantry formations.  In this scheme every Infantry Battalion will eventually have one platoon that is equipped with STAGs to provide heavy weapons support.

Light Armored Battalion
Company A
   Command Lance:  6 x STAG
   Second Lance:  6 x STAG
   Third Lance:  6 x STAG
Company B
   Command Lance:  6 x STAG
   Second Lance:  6 x STAG
   Third Lance:  6 x STAG
Company C
   Command Lance:  6 x STAG
   Second Lance:  6 x STAG
   Third Lance:  6 x STAG

STAG Infantry Assault Platoon
   First Maniple:  10 x STAG
   Second Maniple:  10 x STAG
   Third Maniple:  10 x STAG

Why are you following different organisations? ie why do you use units made of 6 or of 10 Vehicles?

Also, I think the Stag units might also use Close Air Support, perhaps more than the classical Taurian Armoured Units since they don't have access to artillery.

And are you sure, you could get your hands on so many Fusion Engines?

Due to the Taurian useage of militia for so much defense, I've always had an easier time stealing from the Taurians than from anyone else (well, besides the Magistry, who in 3025 just doesn't have anything worth stealing).

On the other hand, where, exactly, are you going to steal 40-rated engines?  They're not exactly common.  At least the 160s are manufactured for Locusts.

Halvagor,

If I told you where we steal--ah, I meant to say purchase--the GM 40-rates from, why then I'd have to kill you.   ;D  You know, state secrets and all that.

But this could be explained that might need more explanations later one.
