==Overview:==
The Gumdrop-class shuttle is meant to be an extremly low-cost spacecraft
capable of carrying up to six people, and travelling distances up to 1
Astronomical Unit (approx. 149.6 million km) in under 15 days, while costing
less than a million C-Bills.
Similar in construction to late 20th and early 21st Century small spacecraft,
but powered by a common Leenex 60 fusion reactor, the Gumdrop is not exactly
an aerodynamic spacecraft, and, like the S-7 Bus, does not generally enter the
atmosphere. When forced to do so, it flies much like a spheroid small craft
or DropShip, landing on extendable landing legs carried flush against its
cylindracl main fuselage, ensuring that the large rear engine bell has
sufficient clearance to stay off the ground. Atop the main fuselage is the
detachable main crew compartment, or "CHARM" (Civilian Habitat & Reentry
Module). A conical module 5 meters tall, the CHARM functions in a manner
essentially identical to the ubiquitous escape pods found throughout the Inner
Sphere, capable of its own limited flight and emergency reentry and landings.
Paired with the full Gumdrop shuttle, however, the CHARM module has access to
the fusion drive, 12 tons of fuel and 4.5 tons of cargo the main fuselage
carries. This permits the Gumdrop to achieve up to 288 km/sec of delta-v,
sufficient to cross 1 AU every 12 days, with reserve fuel to decelerate at the
end of its journey. When its cargo hold is completely devoted to supplies and
consumables, this could support six people for 150 days, though in practice,
most Gumdrops rarely carry a full six crew and passengers, and usually reserve
more space for cargo. The Leenex 60 engine can provide 2 Gs of continuous
thrust or 3 Gs in emergencies. When paired with the equally-inexpensive
Bug-class lander, the entire "Stack", as it's often referred, has its utility
extended considerably, while still costing less than typical 20-ton
BattleMechs like the Wasp or Stinger.
