2720s Prince Richard Davion began building up the AFFS secretly in violation of Council Edict 2650 FM:FS p. 9
Edict of 2650 only limited the # of personel. Following the war of Davion Succession, Richard Davion began building up the number of mechs, tanks, fighters, creating a large stockpile. He also increased the numbers of reserves & militias which did not fall under the active duty personnel caps. HBHD p. 45

Avalon Hussars
one of the oldest formations in the FS, traces back to Alliance Marines, Stranded on New Avalon and later joined the FS rather then return to the Terran Hegemony. Became one of the first organizations to field an entire Battlemech Regiment. Several regiments lost during the Davion Civil War, Originally (at start of 1st SW or earlier it is unclear when Originally references) the Hussars had 26 Mech Regiments and 33 conventional regiments. AH trace their history back to an Alliance Tank Regiment called the Avalon Hussars. By the time Battlemechs were introduced the unit was over 30 regiments, HDSB p. 138

The exact number of March Militia Units active in 2785 is up for dispute. Notice the Crucis March has eleven Combat Regions but only eight regiments to defend it. I'll take a guess and say the other three were broken up during the SWs to patch up holes in line units.

With the Capellan March the situation was quite different. Worlds like Valexa, Sirdar and Alcyone were still part of the CC in 2785, so it would have been impossible for March Militia units to be raised from them. I doubt the AFFS would only have four March Militia units guarding the Capellan March*, so I assume there were other now disbanded regiments that were stationed there.

The Draconis March Militia was probably very similar to its current form. Ten regiments seem about right, though the worlds they were named for probably were somewhat different due to the loss of territory in the 1st SW.

*Remember that the AFFS considered the Capellans its biggest threat at the start of the war. The defences in the Capellan March must have been quite large and developed.

why not have the Light Cavalry as second line troops that are drawn across the entire fed suns. heck they had 237 units many of which were destroyed during the reunification and civil wars. the rest could have been lost during the first succession war during the kurita's push toward New Avalon.

Hanson's roughriders were based in the DC when they left the fed suns but it is not clear what unit they were. The Panzer Brigade was said to be from a Davion regiment known as the Panzer Brigade, which was formed during the 2nd SW and went merc in the 3rd SW (FM:MERC p. 73)

Except that's not how references work in Battletech. For example: every time the 7th Crucis Lancers are mentioned it is as the 7th Crucis Lancers, not the Broken Wheel Charioteers. Given the way the reference is worded I am inclined to say that the FS deployed a unit that was called the Panzer Brigade. Maybe it was a precursor of the Federated Suns Armored Cavalry.

Regarding Hansen's Roughriders:
page 59 of FM:Mercs tells us that:
"Colonel Ludwig Hansen of the Roughriders,..., gathered his command and fled the Draconis March"
page 37 of FM:Mercs Supplemental I expands on this by stating that:
"When Ludwig Hansen, a distant relative of House Hansen fled House Davion with his unit in 2961 and merged his soldiers with the prominent Twelfth Atrean Dragoons, led by by Major-General Gerhardt Hansen"

So I guess Irose is right.

Regarding Little Richard's Panzer Brigade: page 73 of FM:Mercs tells us that:
"The unit is descended from the Panzer Brigade, a regular House Davion 'Mech regiment that served in the Second Succession War with mixed success. Early in the Third Succession War, the unit's CO, Colonel DeCord, was discovered dealing drugs. The brigade's executive officer held an inquisition and cast out DeCord and all other unit members suspected of being part of DeCord's organization. He then commandeered the DropShips assigned the unit as its separation pay and led the brigade from the Federated Suns".

The way it is worded I think that means that the Panzer Brigade was the unit's official name, not a
nickname.

You know the way that passage was phrased, the Panzer Brigade could have very well existed before the 2nd SW. We might want to consider it as a part of the AFFS in 2785.

we know the the Light Calvary had 237 regiments. yes i know the argument of the non sequential regiments etc etc. but here me out. of the Light Calvary units 1/3 was used in the Reunification War 1/3 were destroyed/struck/purged during the Civil War, the remaining 1/3rd were destroyed during the combine push to Avalon. the could be the progenitors of the March Militias also. we know the they were considered less valuable than the "Line Units" from how the treated the 237th before the unit fled to the tortugas. these units were throw away regiments is how i see them by the write up of the 237th because it was a Davion Commander not a Star League Commander who ordered the 237th into battle. Also you have the 1st & 5th Victoria Lancers occupied Capella in 2367 HLSB p. 28
3rd Aragon Lancers destroyed on Capella in 2367 HLSB p. 28 what happened to these units? albeit at this time they are only Infantry/armor units. they are more units than we know to the AFFS.
