Thanks guys just about to jump in the shower. I do have a few notes that I will impart tonight concerning academies but what I need now are names. I agree FirstStarLord we should add a few more regiments to the AFFS not many more but some. I would alot them to Independent Commands which is woefully short as of now. But I need units names. For a few Independent Commands and the Regionals as well. So suggest away!! Wink

Oh boy Roll Eyes

Anyway while jumping in the shower I hit upon an obvious point. Since the AFFS is mirroring the SLDF it stands to reason they would do so with their Independent Regiments. As such we can use the SLDF Independent Regiments as inspiration for Davion Independent Regiments. I don't see CAAN units mind you but Dragoon, Hussar, and Light Horse or their Davion equivalents are must. You could also have a Striker style regiment even though it is a Line Unit along with the Heavy Assault and Battle regiments.

As for academies we have the Chesterton Martial Academy which was probably established after the Davion Civil War. I see many academies like those most likely to have been on March Capitals (Robinson for the Terran March, Filtvet for the Outworlds March, Tancredi for the Draconis March, and New Syrits for the Capellan March) before the Civil War disbanded after wards. Chesterton I was thinking could have been one of the new academies established by Alexander to poke the Liaos in the eye so to speak.

The Federated Naval Institute (FNI) on Layover would, along with Albion, be the only holdovers from the Federated Suns old military academy system. This oft overlooked facility could have been founded around 2330 as the premier naval academy for the Federated Peacekeeping Forces (FPF). There isn't much information on Layover except that it has vast deserts but the name of the planet/system could be a very interesting clue. Could this have been a place for "a short stop or break in a journey, usually imposed by scheduling requirements"? If so this could have been an early interstellar hub and reason to begin the growth of space industries. Layover is on the FS 2317 map near Robinson meaning it is an old world although it is outside of the Crucis Pact. Maybe we could set the founding date back some as a result but the reasoning is there. Anyway I figure the Institute always remained true to the Davions in spite of the treatment of the Navy which gradually was pushed to the back burner by the Army. This facility possibly was damaged in the War of Davion Succession starting some thinking of relocating the Naval Academy deeper in Davion space. Neglect and the new Galax facility are slowly spelling the end for FNI.

Sorry I didn't get back to you Six. During the 5 Principalities the Outworlds March capital was Filtvet, the Draconis March capital was Tancredi, the Terran March capital was Robinson.

I want to thank everyone for their input on the AFFS thus far, think we've got all the unit names now.

Armed Forces of the Federated Suns
139 BattleMech Regiments (as of 2785)

Regular Army (40 regiments)
I might change the overall name of this formation as the Regular Army is a catch all. Let me know if you have any suggestions here. Again these are national commands that roam the Federation at the discretion of the High Command. The Andalusian Cazadores are a BTSD creation already hinted at in FM TR 2785 that replaces the Deneb Light Cavalry.
   Davion Guards (8 regiments)
   Avalon Hussars (26 regiments)
   Ceti Hussars (3 regiments)
   Crucis Lancers (2 regiments)
   Andalusian Cazadores (1 regiment)

Training Cadres (6 regiments)
Again if we use the DCMS example that has approximately 5% of your total force reserved for these formations. As our target number for the AFFS is nearly 140 Mech regiments that could mean as many as 7 regiments could be training formations. The only large school that certainly uses these units is Albion. Are there others likely smaller? Of course we need to assemble a list of Federated Suns Military Academies.
Albion Training Cadre (3 regiments) again style like a standard SL Division
NAMA Cadet Cadre (3 regiments) again style like a standard SL Division

Regional Commands (66 regiments)
You can see the current arrangement (as of 2785) of Davion Marches and their twenty two separate Combat Regions on Fanmap 01. These forces I believe form the bulk of the AFFS at this time. If you look and agree with the rest of my math then this could mean as many as 60+ Mech Regiments spread over the 22 Combat Regions of the Federated Suns. An average of 3 Mech Regiments per Combat Region. The UNR news article above says “This group is made up of units like the Clovis Guards, the Syrtis Fusiliers, the Messengers of Shiva, the Kestrel Grenadiers, and the Franklin Gorgons.” Thoughts? 3 Mech regiments for each command styled after a standard SL division, During the SL the High Command would rotate a third of these on/ready/off
     Draconis March (6)
Clovis Guards (3 regiments) [Clovis Combat Region]
Robinson Reivers (3 regiments) [Robinson Combat Region]
Franklin Gorgons (3 regiments) [Franklin Combat Region]
Verde Lancers (3 regiments) [Verde Combat Region]
Tancredi Roughriders (3 regiments) [Tancredi Combat Region]
Kilbourne Defenders (3 regiments) [Kilbourne Combat Region]
     Crucis March (10)
Marlette Musketeers (3 regiments) [Marlette Combat Region]
Kestrel Grenadiers (3 regiments) [Kestrel Combat Region]
Avalon Borderers (3 regiments) [New Avalon Combat Region]
Tsamma Kommandos (3 regiments) [Tsamma Combat Region]
Point Barrow Bulldogs (3 regiments) [Point Barrow Combat Region]
Remagen Panzer Brigade (3 regiments) [Remagen Combat Region]
Anjin Muerto Caballeros (3 regiments) [Anjin Muerto Combat Region]
Broken Wheel Charioteers (3 regiments) [Broken Wheel Combat Region]
Killarney Kerns (3 regiments) [Killarney Combat Region]
Messengers of Shiva (3 regiments) [Islamabad Combat Region]
     Capellan March (6)
Chesterton Dragoons (3 regiments) [Chesterton Combat Region]
Emerson Pikemen (3 regiments) [Emerson Combat Region]
Hobbs Hospitaliers (3 regiments) [Hobbs Combat Region]
Syrtis Fusiliers (3 regiments) [New Syrtis Combat Region]
Seven Sister's Brigade (3 regiments) [Pleiades Combat Region]
Lothair Legionnaires (3 regiments) [Lothair Combat Region]

Independent Regiments (5 regiments)
Based on the SL formations of the same name these single regiments are the problem solvers of the AFFS.
Federated Irregulars = smaller units deployed as troubleshooters
Nahoni Striker = SLDF Striker regiment
Woodbine Chassuers = SLDF Light Horse regiment
Exeter Cavaliers = SLDF Hussar regiment
Kathil Cuirassiers = SLDF Dragoon regiment

March Militias (22 regiments)
     Draconis March (6)
Clovis DMM (1 regiment) [Clovis Combat Region]
Robinson DMM (1 regiment) [Robinson Combat Region]
Franklin DMM (1 regiment) [Franklin Combat Region]
Verde DMM (1 regiment) [Verde Combat Region]
Tancredi DMM (1 regiment) [Tancredi Combat Region]
Kilbourne DMM (1 regiment) [Kilbourne Combat Region]
     Crucis March (10)
Marlette CMM (1 regiment) [Marlette Combat Region]
Kestrel CMM (1 regiment) [Kestrel Combat Region]
New Avalon CMM (1 regiment) [New Avalon Combat Region]
Tsamma CMM (1 regiment) [Tsamma Combat Region]
Point Barrow CMM (1 regiment) [Point Barrow Combat Region]
Remagen CMM (1 regiment) [Remagen Combat Region]
Anjin Muerto CMM (1 regiment) [Anjin Muerto Combat Region]
Broken Wheel CMM (1 regiment) [Broken Wheel Combat Region]
Killarney CMM (1 regiment) [Killarney Combat Region]
Islamabad CMM (1 regiment) [Islamabad Combat Region]
     Capellan March (6)
Chesterton CMM (1 regiment) [Chesterton Combat Region]
Emerson CMM (1 regiment) [Emerson Combat Region]
Hobbs CMM (1 regiment) [Hobbs Combat Region]
Syrtis CMM (1 regiment) [New Syrtis Combat Region]
Pleiades CMM (1 regiment) [Pleiades Combat Region]
Lothair CMM (1 regiment) [Lothair Combat Region]

Also I'd like to thank Irose whose got some great ideas for the AFFS including Regional Academies. This alternate recruiting strategy (aside from major and planetary academies) predates the 3025 era Training Battalions. Each Combat Region has an academy of some sort that trains troops for the regional forces- the best of those recruits may be selected for service with the line regiments. The quality of each academy would vary greatly and they would be more hands on and practical then say NAMA or Albion which would focus more on theory.

The other 2 Ceti Hussars regiments formed from SLDF units that stayed behind.

only reason I ask is that the Merc book lists the units that formed the 2nd and 3rd hussar's as being merc in SD

That would be because Takiro and I decided to ignore the FM:FS in this case because the writers were sloppy.

The 8th Striker almost certainly became the 8th Striker Regiment of the Fighting Urukhai
The 1894th Light Horse is part of the Blue Star Irregulars
The 250th Battlemech Division became the Screaming Eagles Mercenary Unit

As for the 199th & 396th Dragoons- we decided that it made more sense for them to be mercenaries and for the Ceti Hussars to be raised from local troops.

FYI
We have a reference for the 3rd Syrtis Fusiliers- they are mentioned in the Merc Guild book entry for the Lazy Eights.

I'll try to go through the rest of the Merc book and see what other references we may have put in.

FirstStarLord

The Syrtis Fusiliers should probably have more then 3 regiments. They are the premier combat brigade of the Capellan March, and the three regiments that exist in the regular timeline all seem to date back to the Star League era or earlier.

On the issue of the training cadres, other acadamies may have had their own regiments. The War College of Goshen, while formed much later then the schools of the Star League era, did have a training cadre regiment at some point that was a key part of the Capellan March's defenses (House Davion Source Book). So some of the smaller schools during this era should have a regiment as well.

Maybe a combined arms regiment instead of a mech regiment with supporting forces?
