Rocket Launchers on Protomechs
« on: March 31, 2014, 01:18:00 PM »

in the grand tradition of Rocket Launchers as "Should have always been there" weapons (one of the soft retcons currently happening it seems) I am left wondering why Rockets are not used on Protomechs.  is it a question of being too low tech, to much of an Inner Sphere "Taint" or something else.

Making mixed tech Protos is always a risky proposition, thanks to the way the things are designed.  but if a player came to the table with a Proto that used the Tons to Kilograms conversion and put rockets (or standard lasers or other IS gear) on a Protomech, would you allow it?

If it's a pick up game, or set in a mixed-tech era (i.e., Dark Age), or if it's a high-level game and the players are all making manufacturing decisions for their factions, then I wouldn't question it.

It would be very, very strange to see such a model mass-produced during the canonical FCCW or Jihad however. A little bit because they dislike stooping to "barbarian" tech, and a little bit because I don't think they see ProtoMechs as one-shot platforms, but mostly I think regular Clan LRMs are good enough they wouldn't bother.

Maybe make RLs available around the same time that the ProtoMech Autocannon spreads beyond the Blood Spirits.

the more I was thinking about the more it seemed that IS grade lasers would be slightly more practical, particularly the medium and large.  you would save 500 Kilos on the Medium in heat sinks and a full ton for the large (factoring in an IS grade large laser still weighs in at a clan tech 4 tons)
