Time Jump

So having had a snoop around the offical BT forums I see we are set to make a jump to 3150 (ish) to flesh out the dark age timeframe and then in 2014 make another jump to 3250.

What do you all think about this?

I'm so far behind the times that jumping ahead another 100 years isn't going to matter a whole lot to me.  ::)


Hell, I'm so old school I'm more or less still stuck in 3025...  :o

Whoa, didn't realize they were planning another jump to 3250, I knew about skipping ahead to 3150. Very interesting.

I think its a good idea.  The jump is far enough to "reset" the universe without actually resetting it and loosing the exisiting canon.

I expect we migh go back full circle to a era of similar political makeup to the end of the 3rd War, but with the 2nd Tier players a little more of a factor.  But that's just a guess.

I actually like the time jumps, so hopping over to 3250 sounds good to me if it's true.

...Well, they wanted the authority to write their story, their way - I guess it all depends on how far the original 'battletech summit' went.  If the DA was part of the roughed-in events, moving beyond it would give them what they wanted.

I'm ok with it - but I am a little worried about the 'power creep' we've been seeing as advanced technology returns.  I had hoped the Jihad would reverse that, re-creating the slow loss of technology seen during the 1st Succession War, but I wouldn't want too many new weapons and technology coming out to make the HWAE chart longer than the current two pages.

I think Free Taiw...St. Ives gave us a glimpse of that with 3rd Generation Technology, especialy considering some of the Developer comments regarding it.

Hmm. That's very interesting.

My main concern is that it means they do have to start over, fleshing out the characters and factions in the 33rd century.

That would be an issue for the 32nd century since the Dark Age personalities are not as well fleshed out, but there would be a starting point there. Recreating the setting after a second leap forwards is going to be a lot of work and will feel much less fleshed out than other eras.

Captain, we have been allowed to jump into Warp but I think the fluctuations of this black hole near us will have unforeseen consequences.

I would say why not. What matters is the quality/interest of the products.

I look forward to it in some ways and not in others

I noticed they plan to flush out the era with 5-6 books covering the 'DA' time period the time jump is acceptable and gets beyond the DA era to start afresh

What I don't look forward to is the 3rd Gen stuff that's spoken about.  I think primitive, standard and advanced is enough.  At the moment any tech can fight any tech the rumours of 3rd Gen sounds like it will screw over the older tech royally

But if the 3rd Gen Tech renders all of the existing stuff obsolete, it could bring the number of mechs down to a managible level instead of the 100's of designs each with multipule varients.

I like the diverse units it shows how viberant the universe is how much there is available going back to a single TRO type document with (uber) units dominating the old stuff is a bad move I believe

Right now Clan War units can fight Star League units on a field using very similar weapons and the same construction rules different types of the same technology

I can take a unit from any period and fight it out 3rd gen on the other hand would have inclusive tech in units using different equipment

Actually that is how it was with the Clan invasion. I remember we got a veteran BattleTecher of the 3025 era to come back for a game. Gave him a full company of his era choice Mechs against three of our choice Clan machines (3055). My clan Mech was the only one to take significant damage while his company was annihilated. Everyone had a lot of fun but for everything there is a time. Heck Jihad era stuff that I've seen would probably do the same thing to 3050 stuff. Would be a cool story if you start with your old family Mech in the new time jump that has seen years of inactivity in Militia service and now your mobilized. Good luck!!

I do not believe that 32XX setting will be better or worse than 31XX setting or Jihad setting because same developers wrote them all.
