AC/20 BattleMech Design Challenge (circa 3052)
« on: April 14, 2018, 08:07:10 PM »

In my alternate BattleTech setting circa 3052 forces in many InnerSphere powers are asking is the AC/20 a suitable Mech weapon anymore? Heavy hitting long range weaponry and faster XL Engine Mechs have made the AC/20 increasingly difficult for a BattleMech to deliver. My redesign of the Hunchback seeks to overcome this trouble using Star League era lostech. I have an idea with the Centurion as well but I would love to see what you guys can come up with. Using existing designs in early 3052 and Level 2 InnerSphere technology please create an effective AC/20 wielding Mech that could be placed into production. As always I love good fluff so please add to the story as you see fit! Thanks for your interest and good luck!!

And let me know what you think of the Hunchback below, enjoy!

HBK-6K HUNCHBACK

Mass: 50 tons
Chassis: Crucis Type VI Deluxe EndoSteel
Power Plant: Magna 250 Fusion
Cruising Speed: 54 kph
Maximum Speed: 86 kph
Jump Jets: None
   Jump Capacity: None
Armor: Aldis Heavy Ferro-Fibrous with CASE
Armament:
1 Kali Yama Big Bore Autocannon/20
3 Hellion V Medium Lasers
Manufacturer: Kali Yama Weapons Industries
Primary Factory: Kalidasa
Communications System: Omicron 4002 Networking Channel
Targeting and Tracking System: TRSS Eagle Eye

Overview:
Focusing on pilot safety and making effective use of lostech the HBK-5M Hunchback debuted in 3046. While meeting all FWLM design specs many were disappointed by the new model’s lackluster performance. Excess Double Heat Sinks were the subject of many critiques which often pointed out the impossibility of overheating due to engine damage or repeated inferno round attacks. The presence of superfluous ‘freezers’ wouldn’t have been so bad if it wasn’t for the tiny ammunition load that the model possessed for its main gun. With only five rounds available for combat thanks to its single ton of ammo many Mechwarriors joked the 5M was safer for pilots, their opponents! Even the advanced tech Sunglow Prism-Optic Small Pulse Laser drew criticism for its insignificant short-range punch.
These drawbacks proved minor compared to the rise of long range weaponry like the Gauss Rifle and ER PPC which threatened to make the AC/20 obsolete. This was true at least for slow moving BattleMechs like the Hunchback which had difficultly closing range with faster XL Engine opponents fitted with distant hard-hitting firepower. The Clan Invasion and FedCom efforts to optimize their individual war machines in its wake threatened to make this venerable war machine and its main weapon increasing inconsequential on the modern battlefield. As the Marik Civil War began there were already several design proposals to address these problems. So, when Guardian Hestor Hepburn-Marik of Kalidasa wanted a deterrent against possible Lyran adventurism engineers from Kali Yama stepped forward with what would become the new 6K.

Capabilities:
The focus of the entire concept was to improve this venerable trooper’s rate of movement without degrading its toughness or raw firepower. While an Extra Light (XL) Engine promised greater speeds with lighter weight cores they were far bulkier and much costlier which made them somewhat of a liability. These cumbersome power plants also intruded on side torso space which would affect the placement of the Kali Yama Big Bore Autocannon/20. Thankfully engineers found the solution to this dilemma with the old Magna 250 Fusion Engine from the TBT-5N Trebuchet was on hand and readily available. This standard larger engine also had the added benefit of incorporating all ten Double Heat Sinks saving valuable internal space for advanced weight saving materials which would make the final product possible. Nine and half tons of Aldis Heavy Ferro-Fibrous developed for a new design still years away from production provided the maximum protection for this fifty-ton BattleMech. Cellular Ammunition Storage Equipment (CASE) located in the Left Torso was retained from the 5M to help mitigate any internal explosions during combat. The only component that would have to be newly manufactured was the Crucis Type VI Deluxe EndoSteel structure upon which the BattleMech would be built. Thanks to some foreign investment and the new TBT-7M Trebuchet chassis this obstacle would be overcome relatively painlessly. Even the larger three-ton gyroscope required to balance the new design was relatively easy to obtain thanks again to the Trebuchet. The weaponry remained largely unchanged with the exception of the additional Hellion V Medium Laser which replaced the head mounted Sunglow Prism-Optic Small Pulse Laser. Even with this upgrade the design still runs cool during the most strenuous combat situations with coolant to spare thanks to the Double Heat Sinks. The only other addition was one more ton of autocannon ammunition which augmented the staying power of the faster Hunchback’s main gun.

Deployment:
Since the new HBK-6K Hunchback was funded in part by Tai-sho Isoroku Kurita of the Draconis Combine a portion of production was slated for the Dieron Regulars. During the Marik Civil War all new models went to the Silver Hawks and 31st Marik Militia as Guardian Hestor Hepburn-Marik and Tai-sho Kurita agreed. Rumor has it the 6K designation was bestowed for the twin K (Kalidasa and Kurita) creators of this Hunchback. Its performance in combat has thus far been impressive surprising opponents with its speed and toughness. Closing much quicker than older models the 6K has devastated unwary adversaries who were under the impression it could not close distance. Those who made that mistake have not survived to tell about it.

Variant:
A future theoretical variant could drop the Ferro Fibrous armor and return to its original armor plating making way for a Triple Strength Myomer. This model would have to downgrade the head mounted Medium Laser back to the original Small Laser as well and return to ten single Heat Sinks enabling the design to ‘overheat’ and activate its new myomers. Simulations show this future variant would be even faster than the new 6K.

Here is my take: the CGR-2A5 Charger

Overview
The Clan Invasion was a shock for the whole Inner Sphere, even for those not directly facing the assaults of the Juggernaut. All around the Inner Sphere (perhaps even more in the States not directly facing the threat), hastily improvised programs began trying to close the technological gap with the invaders.

The Capellan Confederation was facing a real challenge as it had to reinforce its still weak army, while upgrading its economy and trying to produce new designs to face the next logical step of the invasion.
One of the ways found by the Strategios was as a first step to focus on the retrofit of some promising designs as this process was seen as less costly and quicker than the production of brand new designs. One of the ‘Mechs intended for this new program was the Charger CGR-1A5, an offspring of the Kapteyn Accords and one of the few House Liao prime Assault ‘Mechs.

Capabilities
Inspired by the motto of the old Earth Games Citius, Altius, Fortius (faster, higher, stronger), the engineering team on this project decided to give it more punch, increased resistance without forgetting an increased speed and all this without increasing the price too much.
This meant that a XL Engine was out of question to improve the ground speed, which prompted the use of a MASC., which was able to give the same final speed at the cost of a slightly risk. The extra weight needed by this incredible piece of technology came from the replacement of the standard Internal Structure by an advanced Endo-Steel one.

The firepower was deemed sufficient as it was with an AC/20 and twin SRM-6 providing the bulk of it and the increased speed allowing the Charger to get more often in range. A 3rd ton of ammo for the Mydron A was added, increasing by 50% its endurance and two CASE in the torsos increased the protection should the 15 tons of armour be breached.
For close-range protection, a Small Pulse Laser replaced the Medium Laser in the Centre Torso as an anti-infantry and anti-Elemental weapon (in spite of the lose in range and firepower, this was deemed necessary after a first review of the early battle footages that were available to the engineering team) and an Apple Churchill Golden Shield Guardian ECM Suite from Ceres Metals Industries was put in the Left Arm to further jam at close-range (where the Charger was supposed to fight) the different advanced tools used by the Clans .

The replacement of the 13 Single Heat Sinks by 10 Double Heat Sinks allows the CGR-2A5 to move at top speed while firing all its weapons at will.

The final result costed only 50% more than the original but was seen as more efficient and more resilient, giving the Capellan Confederation Armed Forces a much needed weapon before new more advanced ‘Mechs could be  produced to face the wrath of the Clans.

Deployment
The Capellan Confederation Armed Forces has ordered the retrofit of all Chargers into the CGR-2A5 as soon as possible. Due to the logistical burden it created for the CCAF and the limited access to the newest technologies, this upgrade took much more time than initially expected by the Strategios.
As more modern ‘Mechs were produced, this model of the Charger was sold to mercenary units working for the Capellan Confederation or to the other powers of the Trinity Alliance.

Battle History
The Charger CGR-2A5, the upgrade designed to fight the Clans, did not fight against them. Its first battles were during the Xin Sheng Campaign.

One such example happened during the fights on Necromo between the 2nd Capellan Defence Force and the 1st St. Ives Lancers. In one small battle, a company of the St. Ives Compact forces was trying to flank a retreating force of the 2nd Capellan Defence Force.
Defending the last pass between the pursuers and their prey was a Lance of CGR-2A5. Because of the mountainous surroundings and the Guardian ECM Suite of the Chargers the St. Ives Compact ‘Mechs had to get close to try to locate their opponents, putting them at optimal range of the hidden Capellan ‘MechWarriors.
This cat-and-mouse game continued until the St. Ives Compact decided to call for reinforcements with artillery and Aerospace Fighters destroying the pass and with it any trace of the Capellan Lance that had cost half the company and bought precious time for the fleeing 2nd Capellan Defence Force.

A memorial was later erected along the pass to remember the gallant sacrifice of these men and women.

Variants
Only a singe variant was ever produced with a LRM-10 and two tons of ammo replacing the twin SRM-6.  With 1 of every 4 CGR-2A5 produced of the variant b, this ‘Mech is meant to support its Lance as it closes into range. To allow it to perform its mission over longer periods of time, it was decided to add one ton of ammo more instead of a more precise Artemis-IV system.

Notable ‘MechWarriors
One of the few survivors of the suicide-stands of the 3rd Confederation Reserve Cavalry during the Andurien-Canopus invasion, ‘MechWarrior Min Bin was given one of the few CGR-2A5 in the rebuilding process of this unit.
It is hoped that the widespread use of the newest ‘Mechs available in the CCF, showing the interest of the Capellan Confederation, will stop their tendency to fall to the “hopeless battle syndrome”. Obviously, this did not work with Min Bin as he fell on Denbar during the Xin Sheng Campaign during the command company final suicide charge.

Very nice Ice, i like your concept alot. The 80 ton weight class is pretty ideal and i love how u kept the stadard engine and paired it with a MASC. The SRM 6 gives me an urge to swap one with a Narc. But the Charger is an excellent platform for the AC/20. Fast and powerful.

My modified Centurion named the Invictus should up tomorrow if my internet ever gets working again.

The 1A5 is the greatest 3025 Charger.

I'll have to check it out on Heavy Metal but you sure did a nice upgrade. Any other AC/20 platforms out there which can be improved??

Here is one more from me. As always tell me what you think!

INV-1DS INVICTUS

Mass: 50 tons
Chassis: Corean Model KL77 EndoSteel
Power Plant: GM 300 XL
Cruising Speed: 64 kph, 76 kph w/ Triple-Strength Myomer
Maximum Speed: 97 kph, 119 kph w/ Triple-Strength Myomer
Jump Jets: None
   Jump Capacity: None
Armor: StarGuard III with CASE
Armament:
1 Mydron Model A Autocannon/20
2 Photech806c Medium Lasers
Manufacturer: Corean Enterprises
Primary Factory: New Avalon
Communications System: Corean Transbanc-J9
Targeting and Tracking System: Corean B-Tech

Overview:
NAIS designers studying the new Hunchback HBK-6K concept were convinced they could do better with a BattleMech based Autocannon/20 delivery system. They determined fairly quickly that the Centurion which serves as the premier Davion medium Mech would provide an excellent basis for such a platform. One official variant, the CN9-AH, that had not been upgraded with lostech dropped its Medium Lasers to upgrade its Autocannon/10 to an Autocannon/20. However, the modification that captured the imagination of the entire project was the legendary Yen Lo Wang piloted by Justin Xiang Allard. This Solaris Championship Mech dropped the LRM-10 and its ammo exchanging it for an Autocannon/20 and a Hatchet. More importantly it focused this most famous Centurion into a short-ranged killing machine which scientists wanted to amplify as much as possible. When word got out about this improved Yen Lo Wang using cutting edge technology it took on a life of its own even drawing attention from the First Prince. Moved by the tribute to his belated friend Hanse Davion named the new war machine the Invictus meaning unconquered or invincible in honor of this national hero.

Capabilities:
The Invictus is a close-range mauler designed to get to point blank range as quickly as possible and devastate its opponent. Based on the Centurion CN9-D it shares much in common with its forebearer as many of its component parts are identical. The Corean Model KL77 EndoSteel chassis, the GM 300 XL engine, the Corean electronic systems, and even the two Photech806c Medium Lasers remained almost wholly unchanged. The only significant change from the Centurion was that the rearward facing laser was redirected forward. Even the single Heat Sinks were left as is in order to take advantage of the newest scientific addition, a Triple-Strength Myomer. Taking two consecutive Alpha Strikes to activate this heat activated system allows the four-ton Hatchet to double its raw hitting power. Of course, in order to make room for these additions the LRM-10 along with its Artemis IV FCS and ammo had to be removed. The LB-10X Autocannon and its ammo were replaced with the massive Mydron Model A Autocannon/20 used on the Lightning Aerospace Fighter. Manufactured at Yeffters Weapons Factory on Gulkana in the Crucis March this giant main gun generates enormous damage at short range. The 300 XL Engine combined with an active Triple-Strength Myomer can propel the Invictus forward at nearly one hundred and twenty kilometers per hour enabling it to close range rapidly with almost any opponent. With such tight quarters combat being the norm designers decided to add a ton of armor to the Invictus which they carefully positioned to take best possible protection for the ‘Mech. While it shares many components and a passing resemblance to the old Centurion some aesthetic changes were made giving the Invictus a different look. The head was changed to resemble a Samnite gladiatorial helmet from ancient Rome and like it’s hatchet wielding brothers (the Axman and the Hatchetman) functions as a Full-Head Ejection System to better protect its pilot.

Deployment:
Limited production runs at Corean’s New Avalon facility were first dispatched to the Davion Guards, the St. Ives Lancers, and the Knights Exemplar. It is with these units that the Invictus will see its first active duty combat but certain Davion gladiators on Solaris have also petitioned for this ‘Mech in the meantime. Despite its capabilities there are critics who say this is nothing more than an arena ‘Mech which has no place in a real warzone. Some Mechwarriors complain that the Invictus lacks the stamina to engage in a lengthy engagement. It takes to two full salvos to activate the Triple-Strength Myomer leaving just eight rounds of full combat fury. Once the autocannon ammo is spent the Invictus is left without its main gun, must make normal strength hatchet attacks, and is slowed to regular speed. Also, unlike the Hatchetman and the Axman it does not jump limiting its effectiveness in urban settings. However, the same can be said of the new Exemplar which as the Knights ‘Mech of choice will likely be paired in that new prestige command with the Invictus. While only time will tell for certain who is right in this debate no one should underestimate this dangerous close quarters BattleMech.

Thanks Abele, in truth I don't know how good the Invictus would be for actual combat. Originally I was gonna go for more of a CN9-AH upgrade with a MASC but that looked a lot like the Hunchback. So far the Charger and Hunchback I like the best with the Invictus as more of a niche feel.

Here's the first one, a Victor. I went with standard 3050-era switches. I swapped out the 15 Single heat sink for 10 double heat sinks. The five tons went to weapons replacements, CASE and armor upgrades. The SRM launcher was swapped out for a 10-tube LRM launcher to give the Victor much needed long-range fire support. The MGs in the legs were removed with small laser replacing them and then mounted them in the side torsos The ammo bins for the LRM and the AC are now protected by CASE. The standard armor has been replaced with 11.5 tons of ferro-fibrous of armor for a near 30% increase in protection.

The Victor has potential as a mobile assault delivery system of the AC/20. I could see it being deadly in urban environments and places where terrain can block longer ranged opponents. I'd like to drop the LRMs and max the armor for best possible protection especially if it is going to be a short range slugger.

The Atlas is of course a solid platform but its speed (3/5) and lack of mobility (no jump jets) really limits its ability to deliver the AC/20. I'd like to add jump jets and make it a mobile slugger like the Victor.

I was going to put jump jets on the Atlas, but I thought it would
be a bit cheesy and I would have change the weaponry.

I love cheese! Seriously though I am trying to see with this contest how an AC/20 can remain a viable combat option or in other words why aren't you replacing it with a Gauss. While it can take a pounding ur Atlas can never really force its way into AC/20 range. Jump Jets would give it mobility to do so like the Victor. Speed wise i think u have to go 5/8 minimally to bring it to bear.
