The Atlas in the 32nd Century has shown a mech that was once an Icon becoming something of a "Me Too" joke in the Inner Sphere. The Federated Suns began Replacing Atlases with their Broad, Gatling Cannon wielding III models, while the Lyrans gladly accepted the Blakist upgrades to produce the Star Leauge's Atlas II. Meanwhile the Republic of the Sphere used a faster, slimmer more toned down model that shared the DCMS "K" designation but looked anything but.
the Draconis Combine, meanwhile was still using the AS7-K that they had been producing since the close of the War of 3039. But where being assigned an Atlas was once a source of Combine pride, it became a joke in the DCMS. between the Showpiece that was the Shiro and high tech options like the Tenshi, Akuma, or Tai Sho, (to speak nothing of Clan Tech replacements) there just slowly became less of a place for the DCMS Staple.
Seeking to have the icon reclaim it's place int he DCMS and make the old visage feared once more, :AW sought to upgrade the Atlas the same way the Hatamoto was upgraded with it's V2 series.
the first step in revitalizing the Atlas was to remove the dreadful single heat sinks that were once common but now rare to the point of being specially manufactured for the Atlas. this upgraded allowed nearly 5 tons to be shaved off the mech's mass. Further mass was saved by using an endo composite structure. Finally as a secondary asset from the removal of Clan Nova Cat, Clan Spec LRM launchers replaced the older missile rack.
nothing that the Atlas was meant less to be a command mech and more an unstoppable force of nature on the battlefield, special armor plating was erected around the engine housing and cockpit, and CASE II was installed to mitigate Combat Loss Groupings.
the end result is an Atlas for a new Generation of DCMS warriors. With the Tenshi being assigned to Ghost Regiments and the Ryuken, this new Atlas is being issued to District Regulars instead, letting the mech prove itself in battle to drive up demand.
