BLT-2R Blitzer: A better InnerSphere copy of the Clan Dasher
« on: February 28, 2021, 09:56:43 PM »

This one was inspired by masterarminas and I have tried to pay him the proper respect herein. His original concept is in the link below. I hope you like my InnerSphere take on it.

The Dasher (Fire Moth): As They Should Have Been
https://www.ourbattletech.com/forum/index.php?topic=2677.msg36352#msg36352

BLT-2R BLITZER
Mass: 30 tons
Chassis: Optimal Light-Omega EndoSteel
Power Plant: Vlar 300 XL
Cruising Speed: 108 kph
Maximum Speed: 162 kph, 216 w/MASC
Jump Jets: None
   Jump Capacity: None
Armor: Victory Anchor 2 Ferro-Fibrous
Armament:
6 Magna Mk II Medium Lasers
Manufacturer: Optimizers Prime
   Primary Factory: Terra
Communications System: Arclight Matrix 1A
Targeting and Tracking System: Vector Supreme

OVERVIEW
BattleMech experts were absolutely stunned by the immense speed of the Clan Dasher as the invaders rapidly swept through the InnerSphere. Early efforts to replicate the design actually turned out better than most InnerSphere copies but there was one designer who was still not satisfied. Master Tech Arminas contended that if the chassis was bumped up to thirty tons it could still maintain the same speed and weaponry with room left over for armor which was critically deficient. His design paper entitled ‘As They Should Have Been” eventually reached the Precentor Martial who was intrigued by the concept. Focht recognized that this swift striking BattleMech would be a boon for his rebuilding ComGuards following the Battle of Tukayyid. The new design firm of Optimizers Prime won the contract production rights and expedited construction of its first ‘Mech. Proudly commissioned as the Blitzer in 3053 this new design promises to take the fight to the Clans with the same blinding speed as their ‘Fire Moth’.

CAPABILITIES
This new BattleMech not only matches the Dasher’s movement profile exactly but it also captures its appearance as well. While it is thirty-three percent larger than its Clan forebearer the biggest visual difference is it arms. Gone are the unusual high mounted arms of the original Fire Moth which were inverted for early Elemental transport. As the Blitzer was not intended to serve as a Battlearmor transport more normal arms could be fitted to this new design. The super-sized ton and a half Optimal Light-Omega EndoSteel chassis and the Vlar 300 XL Engine produced an exceptional pairing which had many benefits. The larger engine size helped incorporate all ten of the Double Heat Sinks which would cool the Blitzer incredibly well. A two-ton MASC mounted in the center torso produces the same speed bursts as its lighter Clan forebearer. Five tons of Victory Anchor 2 Ferro-Fibrous previously used on the Hussar provides much better protection than the Dasher could hope to provide at best. With an eighty five percent of maximum armor protection and its one-third larger size it is more than twice as durable as its Clan predecessor. While this came at a cost of half a ton less ‘pod space’ than the old ‘Fire Moth’ the space was well utilized for armament. Six venerable Magna Mk II Medium Lasers fitted in the arms of the BattleMech gave it solid mid to short range firepower that is nearly inexhaustible. Not limited by ammunition the Blitzer is a superb raider capable of taking down opponents of all shapes and sizes on the modern battlefield. All this high-tech performance comes at a price of over six million C-bills however making these units a substantial investment for ComStar at this time.

DEPLOYMENT
The first runs of the Blitzer went straight to the 12th Army stationed in the remnants of the Free Rasalhague Republic. Raiding parties armed with this BattleMech were more than impressed at its performance which included the defeat of a Dasher in single combat. The Clans will be likely be more wary of future encounters of the Blitzer as a proven unit going forward.

This is a nice fast scout design, but the Word of Blake already designed a 10/15 30-ton chassis with 5 tons of FF armor and a mix of ER Mediums and SRMs: that's the Nyx (production starting in 3077 according to Sarna).  The Nyx NX-100 in particular is extremely versatile, although it uses MML launchers that aren't available prior to the 3060s.

That said, I think this "Blitzer" is very nicely more optimized than the Nyx, and has the Dasher-style MASC that the Nyx does not.

I think the only way to improve on this design would be to make it a true Inner Sphere Omni that allows even more weapons versatility, AND allow it to act like a Battle Armor transport like the Dasher.  With only arm-mounted weapons, it is perfect for the role.  By my count, with Endo and FF armor and MASC integral, it has 11 critical slots for 6 tons of pod weight, which is more than plenty for a light 'Mech.

If you wait until 3078 to manufacture the "Blitzer", you can drop the integrated MASC and use an (optionally Omni pod-mounted) Supercharger instead, which gives you an additional crit and ton of space in place of the MASC.  It does very dramatically boost the retail cost of the 'Mech if you do either or both of these changes, of course (Omni and/or Supercharger).

(small quibble: the image and your flavor text say that the Medium Lasers are arm-mounted, but the stats say torso mounted)

Good catch fabulousorcboy!

I had originally planned to place the Lasers in the torsos as I thought they'd be better protected. But as the Blitzer came into focus as a smaller Dasher II placing them in the arms made visual sense as I appropriated the image.

While true modularity (OmniMech status) is beyond ComStar at the moment a semi-modular approach could make sense here. Especially since the Lasers are placed in the arms. Might work, what variants would you recommend?

I'll have to take a look at the Nyx.

Ok, updated the capability section with a word about the arm lasers.

Quote
While this came at a cost of half a ton less ‘pod space’ than the old ‘Fire Moth’ the six tons reserved for weapons and equipment was well utilized. Originally the weaponry was to be placed into the side torsos of the BattleMech for maximum protection but the ease of swapping equipment in the arms in a semi-modular fashion led designers to place its arsenal there.

And rewrote deployment to sex it up a little bit.

DEPLOYMENT
The first runs of the Blitzer went straight to the 12th Army stationed in the remnants of the Free Rasalhague Republic. In early 3053 elements of the still building 278th Division stationed at Tukayyid struck at the icy Clan held world of Rubigen held by Clan Ghost Bear. Using several Blitzers their raiding parties struck hard at supply depots garrisoned by the 332nd Assault Cluster. Their impressive performance included an impromptu duel which saw veterans of the great battle renew their rivalry. Adept Myles Hickman had been defeated in his Spider during the fighting at Luk by Star Commander Everard Dasher but now armed with a Blitzer returned the favor. The Clans will be likely be more wary of future encounters with this BattleMech as a proven fighting unit going forth.

Also thought of a very solid and easy to achieve variant

Quote
VARIANTS
One of the first modifications to appear in service with the ComGuards was the 2Ra which replaces two of the Medium Lasers with two Small Lasers. This opens up enough room to mount a TAG in the head of the Blitzer which can call in additional artillery support. Initial reports of this ultra-fast spotter in action appear to be overwhelmingly positive in spite of the reduction of overall firepower from the ‘Mech itself.

Weapons and Ammo:         Location      Criticals   Mass
2 Medium Lasers         Right Arm      2      2
Small Laser            Right Arm      1      .5
2 Medium Lasers         Left Arm      2      2
Small Laser            Left Arm      1      .5
TAG                  Head         1      1
MASC               Center Torso   2      2

A variant I would think more for a harasser role would be

Code: [Select]
Weapons              Location  Critical   Heat    Tonnage
LRM 5                    LA        1        2       2.0
LRM 5 Ammo (24)          LA        1        -       1.0
LRM 5                    RA        1        2       2.0
LRM 5 Ammo (24)          RA        1        -       1.0

Scouting and attacking from distance to ensure survival. Sure speed is a good defense but thats negated when you have to get into shorter ranges to use your weaponry.

Interesting long range annoyance, the lack of CASE concerns me somewhat but you do have a point with long range high movement.

Was thinking about an anti-infantry version as well featuring two Flamers and two Small Pulses while retaining two of the Medium Lasers. Not sure how important that would be against the Clans at this time.

I thought about ER Large and TAG but like the symmetry in arms

Yeah, I'd rather go with the two LRM-5s as you suggested.

So with the spotter (TAG), harasser (LRM), and anti-infantry (Small Pulse & Flamers) packages that is four good semi-modular configurations all with a solid purpose.

If we're doing semi-modular variants with arm-mounted weapons (you could even assign the Quirk "Modular Weapons" and specify only arm-mounted weapons...or just only have 5 crits per arm free, and one in the head or CT for balance), then my suggestions are:

Linebacker: 1.5t for three sets of Torso Spikes.  Charge at top speed.  Absolutely lethal against 40t and lighter 'Mechs with a 10/15(20) movement profile -- potentially up to 66 pts of physical damage including spikes, probably in the low-50s most of the time.  That's hitting as hard as an Assault 'Mech on full alpha. (Plus, the spikes negate physical damage on the 'Mech that has them, up to 4 pts, which means you can prey on 40t and lighter 'Mechs with impunity...if you keep making your PSRs)  Combine with TAG and a mix of lasers and after your first successful blitz, you'll be everyone's primary target numero uno.

NARC-buddy: 3t for the launcher in one arm, one or two ton ammo bin as well.  Not quite symmetrical but close 'nuff.  That leaves one or two tons for lasers in the other arm just for pot-shots.  Run in, Narc, run out.

Recon: 1.5t in each arm for a Beagle and Guardian (one each side).  Then a medium and small laser in each arm for pew-pew.  Wave your arms around like a lunatic (or an Ostscout) when using your electronics.  You can even go whole-hog with a TAG in the head, and no small lasers.  Expensive in-universe, but fast and fun, and really useful when facing ECM bubbles or hidden/stealth units.

Rocketman: 2 RL-15s in each arm, plus a medium per arm, too: Anime missile cloud up to four times in the game.  Crits prevent you from getting 3 RL-15s in each arm (only 11 free in the design), but you'd have no backup weapons if you did this, so oh well.  If you really, really, really don't care about heat or back-up weapons, 6 RL-10s in each arm (okay, not enough crits, so it would technically be 6+5) and you can really pull off an insane, surprisingly long-ranged alpha-strike, for the low, low cost of +13 heat on the scale.

I could do quirk 'Modular Weapons' fabulousorcboy, right now a still had 1 critical space in each side torso and 4 in each arm but the more I think about it your probably right with the 5 in each arm.

Linebacker: Bradshaw will die laughing at this one, just ask him about the Charger II LAM. Sounds nasty though!

NARC-buddy: Considered this one but ComStar may be too wedded to Artemis IV systems unlike the FWL in this setting.

Recon: Another one that I thought about and it does make sense, probably most likely to get my seal of approval. I could drop the Spotter variant for this one.

Rocketman: I don't believe RLs aren't out yet or rather back in style yet so I'd have to decline this one. Aren't they one shot weapons??

Catalyst has several different intro dates for Rocket Launchers, including "pre-spaceflight".  Tech Manual printing says "3064", but it was errata'd to FedCom (3050).   And yes, they are one-shot and hilarious.

So what do you think should I remove the Spotter package for the Recon or keep both??

If it's modular, you can have both your cake and eat it, too!

More seriously, I can see some House armies wanting the full recon package, and others just wanting an ultra-fast spotter with standard sensors.  The full recon package is suuuuuuper pricey in-universe.
