Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.

Part of it is I've got an Unseen Shadow Hawk mini that lacks an autocannon.  This seemed like a decent alternative representation for it, and perhaps a better choice than the ML + AC/5 of the standard primitive Shadow Hawk.

I can see that, but its lighter than it should be. I think chassis should (generally) stay at the same weight, or it's no-longer the same mech - like the Marauder - when upgraded to 100tn chassis it became the "Marauder II" which is a different mech. They didn't pass it off as just a new "Marauder" at 33% more weight. This is more of a "Shadow-Accipiter" (Accipiters are relatively small, slender forest hawks) or perhaps a "ShadowKite" (Kites are small to medium-sized, agile birds of prey)

ShadowKite is a cool idea I like that

The canon Primitive tech Shadow Hawk, the SHD-1R, was 50 tons. All I did was a weapons swap, dropping the AC/5 for missile launchers.

Never saw this - it makes no sense, the whole point of 3025 was that that is the "primitive" tech. so the "modern" Mechs have lasers with a range of 1500ft ? you realize that's less than 1/3rd of a mile right . a (real) modern tank can hit targets at over 2 miles with precision accuracy - that's what happened to the Republican Guard in DS, they set up a rear guard in defilade behind berms and waited for the US tanks to get into the 1mile range of their 2nd hand Russian junk, but the M-1s just stopped at 2miles and popped them like popcorn 1 turret at a time. The SL tech should have much better weapons than listed in the 2750 tech. The old SL book mentioned head seeking missiles (fired from a SL Wolverine so roughly the size of an SRM-6 but fires a single 12pt missile that automatically tracks the targets head - com, IFF or radar transmissions?) which they never published stats for. That should be the "modern - IE SL" tech  with the 3025-3050 tech the (as originally intended) the old junk they are left to make do with. They don't need even crappier junk.

Primitive 'Mechs represent the earliest 'Mechs like the Mackie and have things like 5-ton cockpits, a 20% penalty to their engine ratings, etc., and often use prototypes of weapons like the PPC.  They represent BattleMechs that were built in the 25th Century before "Introductory" (ie. original box set or "Level 1" tech) became standard.

I'm aware of the concept but it's not necessary, the 3025 tech is suppose to be the 'backwater' just to begin with. It certainly has ranges that are completely unrealistic (such as "long" range missiles with a range of < 1/2 a mile that's 1/2 the range of Iraqi tank guns - which were far out ranged by U.S. tanks) one of the biggest detractions I've heard was the horrible ranges provided. and why would any mech need a 5tn cockpit? - that's the size of a large pickup! why would they need that much room/weight? - the 3025 tech was plenty low-tech enough and the "Mackie" is pretty-much a useless design. there was no reason to give it even crappier equipment.

I beg to differ, and adding Primitive BattleMechs is completely logical from the standpoint that we know, in many cases, the designs of 3025 were an evolution of previous designs: just look at the original fluff text for 'Mechs like the Shadow Hawk or Wasp, which make it clear they evolved into those forms. Codifying the rules that made these earlier 'Mechs makes sense to me.

Of course, you don't have to like it, but if your primary complaint about a Primitive BattleMech is that it's a Primitive BattleMech, my advise would be to move on.

I like the idea, it's well-balanced as the Shadowhawk should be. Wasn't there, though, a mech called the Liberator with a very similar layout?

Even so, it's a surprisingly tough trooper for primitive tech.
