Overview:
The DCMS has been struggling to provide itself with sufficient double-heatsinks for their forces, a particular issue with their fondness for PPCs and the new ER PPC. With requests to provide a machine suitable for export to the Combine, Kali Yama altered one of the Hunchback production lines they have been restoring to accommodate this new customer.


Capabilities:
The HBK-5K strips out the massive autocannon of standard Hunchbacks, using the internal volume of the weapon pod to house additional heatsinks displaced by the larger but lighter engine (shared with Irian's upgraded Trebuchet).

Now moving as fast as most Inner Sphere cavalry designs, the HBK-5K uses the power conduits in the arms to carry a pair of Lords Light 2 Extended Range PPCs. These weapons are generally fitted on arrival in the Combine at a Quikscell facility and there have been complains about poor connections leading to occasional examples of the weapons cutting out in the field. Kali Yama is adamant that this caused by Quikscell technicians, while Quikscell take the position that redesign of the mounts is required. No immediate end to this debate is in sight, although the threat of the Clans means that shipments continue regardless.

Since the ER PPCs strain the power conduits as it is, there are no other weapons on the HBK-5K. Instead the tonnage usually allocated to lasers is used for jumpjets mounted on the rear torso. This has proved a little vulnerable to weapons fire, but the DCMS high command is unsympathetic towards mechwarrior complaints, suggesting that they should refrain from showing their backs to the enemy. Kali Yama recognise the issue but take the position that the rear armour of the Hunchback was always comparatively thin and that this would be the result of any components mounted there.

Variants:
The DCMS has been working on using the Hunchback chassis to carry a gauss rifle since 3039, when the 9th Ghost Regiment made successful use of two conversions only to run into gyro problems. The HBK-5G has resolved this by removing heatsinks that were deemed superfluous and increasing the armour on the legs to lower the centre of gravity. Enough free tonnage was left to upgrade the head laser to a third Hellion-V. Refit packages to this variant are being sent to
the Ghost Regiments first as a reward for their pioneering work.

First, the idea of the semi-Omni (OM, OM-2...) comes from Blacknova. It might be a bit away from what you envisioned but you gave me the fluff idea.

Second, this is no Omni or not true one but 6 interchangeable and quite flexible versions of the Hunchback.



As we all know Blake, be He blessed, inspired the pale copy from His Truth that is the Unholy Book Movement, which spread in the former Federated Suns (May Blake’s Wrath fall upon them). However, even those that are not blessed can sometimes found the Truth but once they have seen It, they should acknowledge it for what it is and bow to the Holy Blake’s Wisdom as “He will shine His Light on everyone and they will all be blessed if they accept the Truth.”

Just look at Kali Yama Weapons Industries. They tried to make profit by turning out imperfect designs, yet when we approached them requesting in the name of the Free Worlds League (as Conrad Toyama once said “To spread the Truth of His Vision, deceiving those blind to the Word of Blake is not a sin but a mean”) a new more advanced design based on the Hunchback they greedily agreed to develop something new without looking at the credentials of our agents (“The unbelievers  who He will want to lose will not be able to see His Light”) finding out useful elements in what we provided them with and inspired by the Mercury and some intel our lost brothers had on the Clans, they managed to develop the idea of a semi Omni, making good use of the easiness with which “Swayback” versions had been produced for years. “At the end of the time, those blessed will turn the weapons of the Abomination against it and triumph over it.”

From what our fellow brothers in Kali Yama (“Even in the darkest place, the Holy Words of Blake will echo in those you shall call brothers and sisters”) told us the idea was to use the huge torsos of the Hunchback to make room for weapons in it while keeping the general disposition of things with the main gun in the Right Torso and the ammo protected by a CASE in the Left one. However due to the lack of flexibility, this CASE had to be retained in all variants including those not needing one. If we are to develop a true OmniMech this total flexibility will be of great value to us.
The ground speed remained the same but was improved through the implementation of a MASC System. Even if some say it is a gamble, it is worth playing it and “Blake will watch over His sons and daughters, bringing them luck.” The final touch for the base was to improve the Heat Sinks to 10 Double ones, increasing the cooling capacity by 54% for a drop in weight of 23%,

The first variant is a classical Hunchback with an AC/20  and 3 full tons of ammo paired with 3 Medium Lasers.
In spite of several intents, the Gauss Rifle version of the Hunchback always had troubles with recoil. Thanks to the use of Endo-Steel and a clever repartition of it, the newest version of the Hunchback carries one and can fire it without any problem with 2 Medium Lasers being available as back-up weapons.
The third available version is a true city fighter with 4 Jump Jets, 4 Medium Lasers and 3 SRM-6 linked to Artemis-IV.
The fourth version is the opposite focusing on firepower at longer ranges thanks to an ER Large Laser and 4 LRM-5. For close fights, 2 Medium Lasers back up the heavy battle fists of the Hunchback.
For reasons linked to the damage/heat ratio, the next variant of the Huncback carries 3 Large Lasers instead of a Blnary Laser Cannon. The 13 Double Heat Sinks are barely able to prevent it from overheating when the 2 Medium Lasers are added in the mix.
The last version invented by Kali Yama is a mix between a heavy hitter and an urban fighter. Packing an ER PPC, a Large Pulse Laser together with a Medium Laser and a Small one, it can provides a heavy firepower at all ranges. Its Jump Jets and Guardian ECM just increase its overall flexibility.

The final results of this “official” Marik order were deemed a total success thanks to the semi-modularity enjoyed by the HBK-5Y and the number of Hunchbacks produced was also easily increased thanks to the higher standardisation afforded by the Kali Yama factory.
All the production units have been shipped to our units and I have been told that the office of the Chief Armorer has launched an investigation to find out what happened to the latest year shipment of Hunchbacks has they never arrived where they were supposed to. However, it is rather unlikely that they will find anything as everyone involved in this project has been dealt with.

A number of Hunchbacks were sold off to mercenaries from Coventry without their weapon loads, surprisingly many of these have later shown up in the Marian Hegemony, leading many to believe the Caesar is using his funds through intermediaries to bolster his limited 'Mech reserves. While primitive in nature the twin Blazer configuration that the Marian Hegemony has deployed is a savage killer Able to headcap opponents with either weapon. While not as devastating as the Clan's Hunchback IIC the design is more durable and may have been inspired by it.

Kali Yama Weapons Industries of Kaladisa has long been one of the few remaining facilities able to produce the venerable HBK-4G Hunchback BattleMech.  As the Free Worlds League Military began to integrate recovered technology from the Helm Datacore in the late 3030's, the Hunchback was a prime candidate for an upgrade and overhaul.

However, with the amount that the FWLM was projected to expend on upgrading other (more crucial) BattleMechs, Kali Yama execs were told that affordability for their new Hunchback was of critical iimportance.

Accordingly, the design teams at Kali Yama decided against installing a very expensive extra-light engine, and instead retained the venerable Nissan 200 standard fusion engine.  While this meant that the new Hunchbacks would be no faster than their ancestors, it also kept the price tag low and the design affordable.

Four different designs were proposed and in a very rare instance of corporate brilliance, Kali Yama decided to integrate all four designs into a single coherent whole.  Each would feature an newly developed Endo-Steel II internal structure to save mass; further weight savings were made through the adoption of double-strength heat sinks, allowing Kali Yama to remove three dedicated heat sinks from the basic chassis, while the Starshield armor was increased to 10.5 tons . . . giving the new Hunchback near maximum protection for its weight class.

Each chassis would incorporate CASE (Cellular Ammunition Storage Equipment) in the left torso to prevent any ammunition from gutting the 'Mech and rendering it unsalvageable.

The basic frame was the HBK-5G . . . which was very similar to the HBK-4G.  The primary weapon is a Kali Yama Big Bore Class 20 Autocannon in the right torso, supported by a Hellion V Medium Laser in the right arm.  The left arm mounted a Hellion X-III ER Large Laser, however, while the prior head-mounted Small Laser was removed entirely.  An 11th double-strength heat sink was installed to deal with heat, while two tons of ammunition provided adequate (if not great) endurance on the battlefield.

The HBK-5H removed the Hellion X-III and Kali Yama Big Bore, along with the 11th DHS.  This variant instead mounted a Kali Yama LB-10X Autocannon (with two tons of ammunition for twice the combat endurance!) and a Parti-Kill Heavy Cannon PPC in the right torso, supported by three Hellion V Medium Lasers (right arm, left arm, and head).  While the Kali Yama LB-10X and Parti-Kill Heavy Cannon delivered the same damage as the Kali Yama Big Bore, they possessed twice the range and extended the combat endurance of the design . . . albeit at the cost of concentrated damage!  With the addition of the third Hellion V Medium Laser, this variant was able to inflict greater damage, but also proved easier to overheat.

The HBK-5I retains the three Hellion V Medium Lasers of the -5H, but replaces the Kali Yama LB-10X Autocannon and Parti-Kill Heavy Cannon PPC with a pair of Imperator Ultra-5 Ultra AC-5 Autocannons.  Fed by two tons of ammunition, this variant has the same damage potential as the -5H (but with even more scattered damage!) and greater overall range, but has roughly the same combat endurance as the -5G.  On the positive side, however, the -5I is virtually impossible to overheat, even on a running Alpha Strike while double-tapping both autocannons . . . and being covered in inferno gel!

The final variant is the HBK-5J, which attempted to fit a Gauss Rifle onto the Hunchback chassis.  The design team at Kali Yama had learned from earlier attempts and managed to reset the gyroscope to offset the immense recoil of the Imperator Dragon's Fire Gauss Rifle.  Fed by two tons of ammunition, this variant has endurance somewhere between the -5G/-5I and -5H.

Secondary weaponry consists of a Hellion X-III ER Large Laser (left arm) and a Hellion V Medium Laser (right arm), giving this variant perhaps the greatest damage profile at long range of any of Kali Yama's new Hunchbacks. 

Even with just the standard 10 DHS, the -5J is cool running, although not to the same extent as the -5I.  It has, however, proven quite popular in the FWLM.

Kali Yama delivered a full battalion of these new Hunchbacks to the FWLM for field testing.  Each lance consisted of one each of the new variants, with a total of nine of each variety delivered to the FWLM.  The lances were divided amongst FWLM units and Provincial units and underwent substantial field trials and testing in the actual field of combat.  It was discovered that the various Hunchbacks meshed well together with a good mix of short- and long-range combat weaponry and offered unit commanders a flexible approach, while using just a single base chassis.

It is believed by many that Kali Yama is considering upgrading the HBK-5 series Hunchback to an actual OmniMech after studying salvaged Clan OmniMechs handed over to the Free Worlds by the Federated Commonwealth and Draconis Combine.  If this rumor is true, then the HBK-5G/H/I/J would be the perfect test-bed for such an experiment, although that lies years in the future at the very least.

VARIANTS:
The popularity of the new 6K approach led quickly to an entire series of AC/20-less Hunchbacks commonly referred to as ‘modern Swaybacks’. Patterned after their Succession War precursors they featured smaller weaponry which fundamentally alters their appearance. Thanks to a lack of interior space caused by the bulky EndoSteel skeleton and Ferro-Fibrous plating these variants often utilized missiles as their main weaponry.
The so-called Narc Swayback or the 6SN swaps out the massive Autocannon for three SRM-6s and a Narc Missile Beacon System. Similar to the old 4SP this variant transforms the Mech into a devastating spotter for friendly missile units. Each SRM rack comes with a ton of ammunition resulting in longer staying power for this model as well as greater potential overall damage generated (+16). However, this damage is more spread out than a single focused AC/20 blast and running Alpha Strikes also produce a small overheat effect (+3).

   The fire support Swayback also known as the ‘Trebacket’ relies on massed LRM-5s rather than a single AC/20 to cause damage from range. The head mounted Medium Laser is also removed to make way for a sixth LRM-5 which allows it to match the Trebuchet’s missile array. While this only results in a small damage increase (+5) from the base Hunchback model it’s striking distance is increased more than two times as far. Additionally, five tons of LRM ammo allows for twenty rounds of consecutive missile fire which can outlast most opponents and since running alpha strikes from the HBK-6LT variant results in heat neutrality (20 heat) the results should prove absolutely withering.

   Finally, the HBK-6LB swaps the massive AC/20 for a lostech LB 10-X AC which doubles the main gun’s weapon range. Even though damage is decreased by half the possibilities especially versus Clan Elementals are intriguing. Additionally, it adds three Medium Lasers for a total of six such energy weapons on this ‘Shotgun Swayback’. This arsenal is slightly more powerful (+5 damage) than the base model even if it is less focused. Heat generated during a running Alpha Strike (22) produces a slight overheat effect which doesn’t impact battlefield operations unless performed three times in a row.

The Mech known as Hodgepodge by its designer and pilot, Mad Martin 'Marty' Ganz is based on the laser bedecked HBK-4P Hunchback. Ganz, one of the most experienced Gladiators on Solaris 7 has been shot out of more Mechs than most Solaris 7 gladiators have had fights. He's a former Class 3 champion and has been to the Class 6 quarterfinals a total seven times in his 30+ years of fighting in the arenas. A man of great engineering skill and personal wealth (estimated at five billion C-Bills) he continues to fight as an independent even though has major connections to many of the Stables on Solaris 7. He's also famous for being the lead singer and guitarist for the band Mad Marty Ganz and the Willows (which was wildly popular on worlds within two jumps of Solaris for a decade). While many of the Stables had great technicians they did not have the ability to redesign a standard fusion engine with double heat sinks. So, at great expense, he contacted the managers at Norse-Storm's Solaris facility and they agreed after some intense negotiaions, to modify a Magna 250 fusion engine with double heat sinks.

The original HBK-4P was armed with eight medium lasers, but with the engine upgrade and the switch from 23 single heat sinks to 12 double heat sinks, a total of eleven standard medium lasers now arm this new version. This being Solaris, the lasers come from a variety of different suppliers, six to be exact, mostly found in various salvage yards on the planet. For greater mobility in the various arenas, four Northrup 12000 (salvaged from a Wolverine) have been added. Paired with the new triple-strength myomers Hodgepodge has unexpected mobility and maneuverability and has surprised a number of opponents. The Guardian ECM suite is just another advantage for Hodgepodge and has been used to great effect in the Factory and the Jungle in its first two fights.

After the sucess of Hodgepodge, the powers that be at Norse-Storm Solaris, contacted Ganz to work on a more standardised version of the Hodgepodge. Ganz agreed and the HBK-5P Hunchback was born. All of Ganz's structural changes, including the new myomers, were retained with the only significant changes being made to the weapons loadout and number of heat sinks carried. Seven of the eleven medium lasers have been replaced by five medium pulse lasers while two heat sinks have been removed to allow for the number of lasers and make greater use of the TSM that equip the Mech. After acquiring the design rights from Ganz, for what amounted a slight loss after the Hodgepodge conversion, Norse-Storm Solaris submitted the design for approval by the Lyran Command's Logisitics and Procurement Division nearly a month after the HBK-5H was submitted.

A trio of periphery-based refits and upgrades. The Canopians with the assistance of sources from within the Free Worlds League upgaded their Hunchbacks with
double heat sinks and replaced the large autocannon with an LRM20 for long-range fire support and an SRM6 to replace the loss of the autocanno's damage potential. The lasers have been retained, but are now of local manufacture. As an added change four Pitban LFT-50 jump jets borrowed from the Shadow Hawk give the HBK-5MC added manueverability. Armor protection remains the same, but some armor has been redistributed to give the rear of the Mech more protection.

Though they are completely separate developments, this Taurian revision to the Hunchback shares many of the same design elements of the Canopian upgrade including the double heat sinks, jump jets and new armor layout. The main change from the original Hunchback is the replacement of the  large auto-cannon with a pair of Donal PPCs borrowed from the locally produced version of the Warhammer. The secondary laser battery has been retained, but is providied by local suppliers.

I was going to post a 5/8/0 standard fusion engine Hunchback (i.e., the Fastback) . . . but Takiro beat me to it!  His was virtually identical to the one I posted in my "Royal 'Mechs of the SLDF" thread a LONG time ago.  But, it is what it is.  And I am happy with my four 4/6/0 SFE variants.
