First, the idea of the semi-Omni (OM, OM-2...) comes from Blacknova. It might be a bit away from what you envisioned but you gave me the fluff idea.
Second, this is no Omni or not true one but 6 interchangeable and quite flexible versions of the Hunchback.
As we all know Blake, be He blessed, inspired the pale copy from His Truth that is the Unholy Book Movement, which spread in the former Federated Suns (May Blake’s Wrath fall upon them). However, even those that are not blessed can sometimes found the Truth but once they have seen It, they should acknowledge it for what it is and bow to the Holy Blake’s Wisdom as “He will shine His Light on everyone and they will all be blessed if they accept the Truth.â€
Just look at Kali Yama Weapons Industries. They tried to make profit by turning out imperfect designs, yet when we approached them requesting in the name of the Free Worlds League (as Conrad Toyama once said “To spread the Truth of His Vision, deceiving those blind to the Word of Blake is not a sin but a meanâ€) a new more advanced design based on the Hunchback they greedily agreed to develop something new without looking at the credentials of our agents (“The unbelievers who He will want to lose will not be able to see His Lightâ€) finding out useful elements in what we provided them with and inspired by the Mercury and some intel our lost brothers had on the Clans, they managed to develop the idea of a semi Omni, making good use of the easiness with which “Swayback†versions had been produced for years. “At the end of the time, those blessed will turn the weapons of the Abomination against it and triumph over it.â€
From what our fellow brothers in Kali Yama (“Even in the darkest place, the Holy Words of Blake will echo in those you shall call brothers and sistersâ€) told us the idea was to use the huge torsos of the Hunchback to make room for weapons in it while keeping the general disposition of things with the main gun in the Right Torso and the ammo protected by a CASE in the Left one. However due to the lack of flexibility, this CASE had to be retained in all variants including those not needing one. If we are to develop a true OmniMech this total flexibility will be of great value to us.
The ground speed remained the same but was improved through the implementation of a MASC System. Even if some say it is a gamble, it is worth playing it and “Blake will watch over His sons and daughters, bringing them luck.†The final touch for the base was to improve the Heat Sinks to 10 Double ones, increasing the cooling capacity by 54% for a drop in weight of 23%,
The first variant is a classical Hunchback with an AC/20 and 3 full tons of ammo paired with 3 Medium Lasers.
In spite of several intents, the Gauss Rifle version of the Hunchback always had troubles with recoil. Thanks to the use of Endo-Steel and a clever repartition of it, the newest version of the Hunchback carries one and can fire it without any problem with 2 Medium Lasers being available as back-up weapons.
The third available version is a true city fighter with 4 Jump Jets, 4 Medium Lasers and 3 SRM-6 linked to Artemis-IV.
The fourth version is the opposite focusing on firepower at longer ranges thanks to an ER Large Laser and 4 LRM-5. For close fights, 2 Medium Lasers back up the heavy battle fists of the Hunchback.
For reasons linked to the damage/heat ratio, the next variant of the Huncback carries 3 Large Lasers instead of a Blnary Laser Cannon. The 13 Double Heat Sinks are barely able to prevent it from overheating when the 2 Medium Lasers are added in the mix.
The last version invented by Kali Yama is a mix between a heavy hitter and an urban fighter. Packing an ER PPC, a Large Pulse Laser together with a Medium Laser and a Small one, it can provides a heavy firepower at all ranges. Its Jump Jets and Guardian ECM just increase its overall flexibility.
The final results of this “official†Marik order were deemed a total success thanks to the semi-modularity enjoyed by the HBK-5Y and the number of Hunchbacks produced was also easily increased thanks to the higher standardisation afforded by the Kali Yama factory.
All the production units have been shipped to our units and I have been told that the office of the Chief Armorer has launched an investigation to find out what happened to the latest year shipment of Hunchbacks has they never arrived where they were supposed to. However, it is rather unlikely that they will find anything as everyone involved in this project has been dealt with.
