Overview:
While the UrbanMech was found in Capellan hands more often than not, the end of the Fourth Succession War left many in the hands of the Federated Commonwealth as they restructured their conquests into the Sarna March. The new March Militias and many planetary militias were given captured and salvaged UrbanMechs because they weren't in high demand, they fit the defensive profile of such units and they weren't considered to pose too much of a threat if these units rebelled.
In addition, other UrbanMechs were used to make good the losses suffered by FedCom employed mercenaries, although usually only where the unit hadn't performed well and the Department of Mercenary Relations felt that it wouldn't be too damaging. Receiving even a single UrbanMech among replacements was considered a stinging reprimand during the early 3030s and as a result, while UrbanMechs didn't exactly multiply, they certainly experienced something of a diaspora.
Faced with the Clan invasion and the sudden need to upgrade BattleMechs, the remains of Orguss Industries saw a chance for a piece of the pie. Having eked out a meagre income from building spare parts for the Capellans' UrbanMechs, they offered a proposal to the AFFC requesting funding to expand their remaining facilities on Marcus to produce a refit package that could be applied to UrbanMechs in the Sarna March and in mercenary hands. When this request was refused, Orguss somewhat desperately re-issued the proposal directly to the Archon. While Melissa Steiner-Davion declined to fund the project, this did bring it to the attention of the Duke of the Sarna March and Prince Victor Steiner-Davion has personally funded the expansion in exchange for a 25% share in Orguss. What he intends to do with this remains unclear.
Capabilities:
The refitted UrbanMechs are certainly a surprise to those expecting to face an old UM-60. The new reactor is a modification of those Defiance Industries developed for their new WSP-1S model and at last means the UrbanMech can keep pace with such blisteringly fast 'Mechs as a Panther or Blackjack.
Replacing the engine is such a major refit that many technicians describe the process as less a refit and more as stripping parts from their old UrbanMechs and fitting those applicable to the new torso core. After the second production run, Orguss responded to this criticism by shipping the torso components as a single unit with the expanded jump-jets and heatsinks already mounted to a structural frame. (More than a few UrbanMechs with previous niggling faults with the torso ring traverse somehow found these faults resolved after using this refit package).
In a clever marketing decision, Orguss opted to retain the Durallex medium armour plating which was already in demand for the Federated Commonwealth's WLF-2 Wolfhound and also upgrade the armament to use the same Cyclops XII large laser. The parts commonality has simplified life for technicians in units that use both.
Deployment:
The UM-70S is predominantly found in the Sarna March but also in mercenary units. The low price tag has led to a small but noticeable upswing in interest in the UrbanMech and it was a major PR boon for Orguss when the Wolf Dragoons purchased the upgrade package for their UrbanMechs.
Orguss is currently exploring the possibility of obtaining funding to expand their faciliites further and eventually begin building new UrbanMechs. Investors have so far not been willing to commit and the board appear nervous of pushing their luck further with the Steiner-Davions, since the price of such investment might leave the corporation effectively under the control of the throne - a worrying prospect for a firm so close to the border with the Free Worlds League.
Variants:
One variant found so far only in the Sarna March is functionally identical but uses Diverse Optics Sunbeam lasers in place of the Cyclops XII due to parts availability. This UM-70D is mostly found paired with BJ-2 Blackjacks.

Overview:
Desperate to rebuild the DCMS's losses during the invasion, the Combine's negotiators accepted a deal from the Free Worlds League to purchase Mechs from the boneyards of provincial militias, chassis considered uneconomic to repair even by third- and fourth-line formations. The Combine ordered these delivered to Mech manufacturers to be repurposed in any way possible as stop-gaps until completely new 'Mechs were available. The results weren't expected to face the Clans, instead being shuffled to units still stationed along the long FedCom border to free up their own better equipment as replacements along the more critical Clan Front.
Among the junk that had long been cluttering up arsenals of House Humphreys and House Halas, a significant number of UrbanMechs were delivered to Independence Weaponry, stripped of armour and autocannon but otherwise broadly intact. At a loss for what to do with them, the board offered to reward anyone who could come up with a workable solution. It was a crippled DCMS officer attached to the firm who suggested looking at the 9th Ghost Regiment's attempts to use a Gauss Rifle on their Hunchbacks for inspiration.
Capabilities:
Since most of the UrbanMech chassis needed partial rebuilds anyway, Independence carried out complete rebuilds using advanced structural and armour materials. The result is slightly better protected than the original and has a marginally lower centre of gravity - which is quite important given the changes to the weapons.
Gone are the old autocannon and small laser in place of a single gauss rifle and one ton of ammunition. The UrbanMech now constitutes a mobile defense turret intended to use its only weapon at long range to hammer invaders briefly before falling back to reload. CASE has been installed to ensure that damage to the Gauss Rifle doesn't destroy the reactors, which aren't readily replaced at this time.
Battle History:
As yet the UrbanMechs assigned to the FedCom border have not been tested in battle. Some commanders feel that this may be for the best. Test exercises have at least proven that the UM-69K doesn't fall over when firing the gauss rifle, perhaps because it can't do so at remotely the same speeds that its inspiration could be moving at when firing.
Deployment:
Only a handful of DCMS units use the 'new' UrbanMechs but they do have a certain small popularity with mechwarriors optimistic about their chances of scoring cockpit hits. It's very likely they will find themselves rotated into militia units once the Combine can provide newer machines. One alternative that its detractors have suggested is removing the gauss rifles for use elsewhere, stuffing the chassis with 16 tons of high explosives and dropping the UrbanMechs out of DCS Kyushu's Mech bays, turning the warship into a high altitude bomber. The DCA is not said to be pleased by the proposal.
Notable 'Mechs & MechWarriors:
Chu-i Hamish Subaru lost both legs and his family's Jenner during the battle of Luthien and was assigned to Independence Weaponry as part of the DCMS liaison team. While he will never be able to pilot it, the first UM-69K has been granted to his family 'in perpetuity' as a reward for his inspiration. Chu-i Subaru's son is currently studying diligently at the Dieron Gymnasium in hope of one day piloting the UrbanMech for the DCMS and in the meantime it proudly 'stands guard' over the production line where refits are being carried out.
