Optimizing the Vulcan
« on: April 26, 2020, 10:37:03 PM »

The niche nature of our seventeenth BattleMech, the Vulcan, in our continuing optimization series should breathe some variety in our latest forty-tonner. This anti-infantry machine was rapidly designed in two years (2775-2777) by the SLDF during their liberation of the Hegemony. Nicknamed the ‘Scarecrow’ it effectively dealt with Amaris foot soldiers who fought with absolute fanatism as Kerensky closed in. In under ten years it made a name for itself even though the Volunteer Regiments who used them took heavy causalities. Mere months into the 1st Succession War the MatherTechno Incorporated facilities on Northwind were destroyed but both the Free Worlds League and the Lyran Commonwealth were able to obtain the design. For the past twenty-seven decades the Vulcan has fought in the service of every Great House and now with the sudden Clan Invasion infantry has evolved. Can ‘Mechs like the Vulcan keep up? Let's see what you guys can do with this Medium BattleMech for the BattleTech: Shattered Dawn setting. I imagine there are a few variants which might make it here.

Unfortunately, I could find no Mech of the Week Article again for us to draw inspiration from but there is always Sarna.net!

BattleTechwiki Page for the Vulcan

Design Criteria
Design: Vulcan Medium BattleMech
Era: 3052, just following the Truce of Tukayyid
Tech: InnerSphere Level 2
Mass: 40 tons

Tech Base
The tech base for this enterprise will be InnerSphere Level 2, also known as Star League lostech, circa 3053. Remember some Level 1 standards which Bradshaw and myself think still have value like Large Lasers and PPCs which feature the same damage factor as their higher tech brethren with less range and perhaps most significantly less heat. Here is a list for your design reference. Let me know if there is anything I missed!

Star League LosTech
Anti-Missile System
Arrow IV Artillery Missile System
Extended Range Large Laser (ER Large Laser)
Extended Range Particle Projection Cannon (ER PPC)
Gauss Rifle
Ultra Autocannon/5
LB 10-X Autocannon
One-Shot Missile Packs
Pulse Lasers (Small, Medium, & Large)
Streak SRM-2
Swarm LRMs
Thunder LRMs
Artemis IV FCS
Beagle Active Probe
Guardian ECM Suite
Myomer Accelerator Signal Circuitry (MASC)
Narc Missile Beacon
TAG
Cellular Ammunition Storage Equipment (CASE)
Double Heat Sinks
Endo Steel Internal Structure
Ferro-Fibrous Armor
Extra Light (XL) Engine

InnerSphere Low Tech
Blazer Cannon (or Binary Laser)
Recon Camera
Remote Sensor Dispenser

New Innovations
Triple Strength Myomer
Hatchet
C3 Computer

Design Traits of this Setting
The Free Worlds League in particular have embraced massed LRM-5s over the larger batteries to provide closer mass equivalents to Clan LRMs. Thanks to a corresponding increase in NARC units these ‘fire teams’ have become quite effective in the Marik Civil War. Also, the Blazer has made an appearance in the shattered FWLM searching for an advantage over their former brethren.
Both the Federated Commonwealth and ComStar seem to have gone in the other direction with LRM batteries preferring larger LRM-15s and 20s linked to Artemis IV FCS to enhance accuracy.
Many Draconis optimizations have included the C3 System which is accelerated from the canon setting which saw their deployment lag.
Regional factions like the Draconis March and the Periphery have seen the introduction of some ‘simple’ lostech items like Double Heat Sinks, Ferro-Fibrous, Streak SRM-2s, and Pulse Lasers. Extra-Light (XL) Engines remain too expensive and have drawbacks which make their deployment unlikely here. Advanced orbital facilities needed for EndoSteel manufacturing also remain out of reach at this point. They are not beyond using PPCs and Large Lasers either which they view as more efficient than their ER successors.

Please do your research (think Objective Raids) for available components as this will be another factor in rapid production. I love fluff and your winning designs will be featured in my BattleTech Salient Horizon alternate setting. I'd like to go beyond the refits bought to you by Technical Readout 3050 and delve into extensive redesigns of your BattleTech favorites. Sharpen up your favorite war machines perhaps drawing on past or current variants while remembering the spirit or role of these Mechs. Don't forget to justify the expense of your project and multiple winners are possible. Figure that all entries have to be completed and posted on these forums by Friday May 8th, 2020 by 11:59 PM which should give you all a full two weeks for this contest, good luck!!

More than two years ago Abele responded to my NARC Missile Beacon Challenge with a version of the Vulcan that I'd like to lead off with here. Just finished this design based on his (only alteration was one ton of NARC ammo was subtracted for the addition of a ton of armor). I consider it a joint effort. Hope you enjoy!

VL-6N VULCAN

Mass: 40 tons
Chassis: Crucis-II Delux Endo Steel
Power Plant: VOX 280 XL
Cruising Speed: 75.6 kph
Maximum Speed: 118.8 kph
Jump Jets: Rawlings 75
   Jump Capacity: 210 meters
Armor: Kallon Royalstar
Armament:
1 Tronnel ERL 24 Extended Range Large Laser
   1 Randell Medium Laser
   1 Octagon Missile-Magnet Narc Beacon
   1 Flame Tech Flamer
Manufacturer: Nimakachi Fusion Products Ltd.
   Primary Factory: Tematagi
Communications System: Omicron 4002 Networking Channel
Targeting and Tracking System: TRSS Eagle Eye

Overview:
The appearance of the Clans and their hyper advanced technology forced the militaries of the Great Houses to innovative. The Invaders missile racks in particular were just half the size of their InnerSphere equivalents. In order to keep pace some proposed the utilization of a number of compact LRM-5s over a larger LRM rack which tended to weigh more. While many traditionalists quickly pointed out the reduced accuracy of this 'massed small battery approach' other radical thinkers pointed to the NARC Missile Beacon as a solution. Such a NARC unit working in concert with small battery Missile Boats could come close to matching Clan technology. Intrigued the FWLM Quartermaster General put out a Request for Proposal (RFP) for such a NARC Missile Deliverer which would take off just prior to the outbreak of the 3rd Marik Civil War. Nimakachi Fusion Products Limited of Tematagi quickly responded with a variant of their venerable Vulcan which impressed many in Marik space.

Capabilities:
The new VLN-6N was based on the 5M introduced a few years prior which used the new light weight Crucis-II Delux Endo Steel internal structure as its core. Combining this advanced structure with more powerful VOX 280 XL Engine found on the SDR-9K Venom increased its maximum speed by nearly twenty-two kilometers per hour. This also allowed for the inclusion of a seventh Rawlings 75 jump jet which further improved its overall mobility and movement factor in order to deliver its new Octagon Missile-Magnet Narc Beacon with maximum efficiency. Mounted in the left torso and fed by a two-ton ammunition bin this shoot and sit targeting gear draws friendly missiles to enemy targets with impressive results. The Tronnel ERL 24 Extended Range Large Laser was developed on site to serve as the VL-6N's primary weapon replacing the Large Pulse found on the VL-5M. Moderately powerful it can project fire at long range to keep opponents off balance or add to withering fire support from NARCed targets. The Sperry Browning Machine Gun was replaced by the venerable Randell Medium Laser found on the original VL-2T. The signature Flame Tech Flamer was retained to deal with any targets who closed to point blank range. Finally, two and a half tons of Kallon Royalstar armor plating was added to increase it's battlefield survivability.

Deployment:
The Rim Commonalty, which morphed into the larger Rimward States, quickly put the new VL-6N into service during the 3rd Marik Civil War. Working along side BattleMechs like the Stalker, Longbow, Goliath, Orion, Archer, Crusader, Griffin, Shadow Hawk and Trebuchet the NARC Vulcan established itself as force to be reckoned with. Capable of reaching speeds in excess of one hundred and ten kilometers per hour as well as jumping two hundred and ten meters this Medium BattleMech can enter and exit combat in quick order. Closing rapidly to NARC its target it can return to ranged attacks or NARC other threats for friendly missile strikes.

As stated in the Hermes II thread, I will be giving this one a hard pass. Based on its original state, this is the third 6/9/X mech in a row in the 40-ton class and I am worn out. I will see you guys in two weeks when Whitworth is up for optimising.

Re: Optimizing the Vulcan
« Reply #3 on: April 27, 2020, 07:55:56 AM »

The new Vulcan was eagerly received by the troops of the FWLM.  The design featured significantly improved firepower, making the mech more effective against enemy mechs, while retaining its potency against infantry units.  Even so, suggestions for improvements began to trickle back to Nimakachi from mechwarriors assigned to the new mech. The two biggest complaints were that the new mech did not improve on the Vulcan's thin armor and that the machine gun ammo was not protected against an explosion.  The Nimakachi engineers quickly found a solution to these problems, replacing the old Kallon Royalstar armor with the new Jolasa-328 with CASE Ferro-Fibrous armor.  However due to space limitations in the narrow Vulcan frame, the ammo supply for the Machine Gun was cut in half.  This was considered acceptable as the large number of rounds was still sufficient for most engagements.

Several other minor changes were made to the design.  One heatsink was removed to free up space in the chassis.  Field trials showed that the VT-5M tended to run cool, even with addition of the Large Pulse Laser so this was considered and acceptable change.  The designers also found room to mount a rear firing medium laser. As the Vulcan commonly operates in urban areas this provides some protection against enemy units that may get behind the mech.

The new VT-6M has begun deploying to units across the league where it has received rave reviews from mechwarriors assigned to it.

Re: Optimizing the Vulcan
« Reply #4 on: April 27, 2020, 09:31:17 AM »

The original Vulcan was designed as an anti-infantry unit that was commonly deployed in urban areas.  The mechs weapons were largely optimized for that role, although the long range Armstrong Autocannon was better suited for open field operations.  With the rediscovery of advanced technology the design team at Coventry Metal Works developed a new model of the Vulcan.  The design team began developing the new model without consulting any Vulcan mechwarriors.  The result was a design that emphasized the wrong aspects of the Vulcan and resulted in a substandard mech.  The new Vulcan carried an XL Fusion Engine, the large bulky engine took up most of the space in the Mech's chassis, greatly increasing the chance that a hit to the torso will damage the engine. They also replaced the old Armstrong Autocannon with an Imperator Ultra AC-5.  This does not remove the biggest problem with the Armstrong Autocannon, the minimum range which is a liability in an urban setting where close combat is the norm.  The design team also decided to use Myomer Accelerator Signal Circuitry to provide the mech with a burst of speed, again something of limited value in an urban setting.

As a result of these decisions sales of the Vulcan lagged.  In an effort to increase sales, Coventry developed a new version of the Vulcan.  This time they consulted with a number of veteran Vulcan Mechwarriors to come up with specifications.  The result was the VL-6S.

The first change made was to the motive system.  Citing the vulnerability of the XL engine to damage, the mechwarriors pushed for a standard engine.  They also suggested that Coventry could use a smaller engine to free up space and weight for other improvements.   This led to the installation of the Pitban 200 engine.  The design team also used a new Endosteel chassis to further reduce the weight.

The smaller engine freed up significant space in the Vulcan's narrow chassis.  This allowed the design team to replace the Imperator AC-5 Ultra with a Defiance Disintegrator LB-10X.  The large cannon finally gave the Vulcan the weapon it needed.  The large cannon has no minimum range making it ideal for urban operations, while the cluster munitions are high effective against vehicles and armored infantry.  To increase battlefield endurance the designers added a second ton of ammo for the cannon.  The secondary weaponry remains unchanged from that of the VL-5S.

All of these changes also forced the removal of the MASC system.  This was not considered to be much of loss by the mechwarriors.

The new Vulcan has been greeted with great enthusiasm from mechwarriors.   Coventry has already seen sales orders double for the new model of the Vulcan.

No problem Abele but you are already in this one thanks to your NARC entry challenge which I entered. I am gonna fluff this one at and perhaps make a few minor changes but you will be credited. Any thoughts you have please just let me know. If not we will see you in two weeks! ;)

The second is battlemech is based upon the Vulcan and features an upsized powerplant:

Battle Value: 1,055

Chassis: Unknown Endo-Steel
Power Plant: Unknown 280 Fusion XL Engine
Walking Speed: 75.6 km/h
Maximum Speed: 118.8 km/h
Jump Jets: Unknown
    Jump Capacity: 210 meters
Armor: Unknown Standard Armor
Armament:
    1  ER Large Laser
    1  Medium Laser
    1  Narc Launcher
    1  Flamer
Manufacturer: Unknown
    Primary Factory: Unknown
Communications System: Unknown
Targeting and Tracking System: Unknown

Overview:
Nimakachi Fusion Products Limited received the RFP from FLWM Quartermaster just
like every other manufacturer in the Free World League's Military Industrial
Complex and had two battlemechs on which to base their new Narc-capable
platform, the Spider and the Vulcan. Ultimately they chose the heavier Vulcan
using the 280XL powerplant that was developed for an improved Spider (Codename:
Venom) and a possible upgrade for their Warhammer.

Using the 280XL allowed for the inclusion of a seventh jump jet an allowed the
Vulcan to retain much of its combat effectiveness. The large pulser has been
stripped away on replaced with an ER large laser and the machine gun has been
replaced by a medium laser. The Narc launcher is mounted in the left torso and
fed by a large 3-ton ammunition bin. Capable of reaching speeds in excess of
110kph as well as jumping 210 meters allows this Vulcan to enter and exit in
fairly quick order. A  30 percent increase in armor protection also helps with
battlefield survivability.

Two good ones Irose!

The first one you submit is very similar to a concept I was considering with some minor differences for a ComStar variant. Would you be alright with me submitting it??

The second slow Vulcan with a big gun feels very Lyran to me. I really didn't considering going slower but it does work. Nice job!

The VL-5S is just so...broken.  IMHO its a horrible upgrade and I wanted to see what I could do while not making it look like the Marik variant.

The Clan Invasion spurred several crash design programs aimed at countering their fantastic technological advantage. One of these was a ComStar refit of the Vulcan intended to defeat their massive Armored Infantry called Elementals. The ‘Mechs role as an anti-infantry platform was well known but neutralizing these highly mobile battle suits would present a challenge. Thankfully the Precentor Martial who likely foresaw an eventual clash with Kerensky’s descendants prioritized the upgrade at General Mechanics on Mars. Obtaining the original design specs through their vast Archives on Terra enabled some progress but other enhancements were the product of pre-Reformation ROM industrial espionage. A limited number of these war machines were ready for action at Tukayyid but since they were so few it is generally overlooked as a Clanbuster. The successful performance of the ComGuards at this titanic clash has the Order actively considering mass production at this time.

Capabilities:
Perhaps it is no surprise that the VL-5P is so similar to the VL-5M upon which it is based because industrial espionage. The nefarious actions by ROM to steal the blueprints of that lostech upgrade would seem to implicit the entire design of simple intellectual theft. However, if the design team is to be believed the only outright use of copyrighted Nimakachi property was the new Crucis-II Delux Endo Steel chassis. By taking this internal structure shortcut engineers were able to cut months of the entire process and jump start a vital weapon in an effort to stop the Clan Invaders. The decision to replace the old Armstrong Autocannon/2 with the Terran made Blankenburg Large Pulse Laser was made to defeat Clan Elementals in tight quarters. The range was dramatically shortened but increased firepower and accuracy were desired far more than that. Other that much of the original VL-2T was simply replicated from ComStar Archives by General Mechanics which was directly ordered by the Precentor Martial to expedite the project. As such the power plant, jump jets, electronic systems, and flamer are exact copies of the defunct MatherTechno Incorporated design. Even the Randell Mediums Lasers were copied but engineers choose to double their number in order to supplement the Large Pulse Laser against Clan Armored Infantry. Finally, in a move to go all energy and eliminate the need for resupply Martell Small Pulse Laser made by Skobel replaced the Sperry Browning Machine Gun. Without the old ballistic weaponry heat spiked but that was dealt with by the addition of eleven Double Heat Sinks which did much to keep the Mech running cool. Perhaps the single biggest improvement came from the replacement of standard armor plating with five and a half tons of Leopard V Ferro-Fibrous. Used on the Kintaro this lostech boosted the BattleMechs protection rating significantly allowing it to survive longer in combat.

Deployment:
Even with the shortcuts taken by the design team only a handful of these war machines were ready for Tukayyid. Operating as a ‘Double Vulcan’ team two of these machines had the ability to nearly obliterate an entire point of Clan Elementals with a single point-blank strike. While the Invaders neutralized most of these Elemental killers their performance was notable and could justify further production. Omitted as a Clanbuster because of its limited number and dubious introductory process the Vulcan could have a future. Hurdles remain however with all the legal problems caused by its initial rapid development and the subsequent Reformation which has revealed all the intellectual property theft which has further been complicated by the outbreak of the Third Marik Civil War. If a settlement can be reached General Mechanics could begin mass production quickly but has so far limited its operations to refits of existing machines.

Vulcan VL-5K

Mass: 40 tons
Tech Base: Inner Sphere
Chassis Config: Biped
Rules Level: Tournament Legal
Era: Age of War/Star League
Tech Rating/Era Availability: E/E-F-D-A
Production Year: 3052
Cost: 3,917,060 C-Bills
Battle Value: 1,096

Chassis: Mather Tech 500 Standard
Power Plant: Pitban 240 Fusion Engine
Walking Speed: 64.8 km/h
Maximum Speed: 97.2 km/h
Jump Jets: Rawlings 75
    Jump Capacity: 180 meters
Armor: Kallon FWL Special Ferro-Fibrous
Armament:
1 Diverse Optics Sunbeam ER Large Laser
    3 Randell Medium Lasers
    1 Firestorm Flamer
    2 SperryBrowing Machine Guns
Manufacturer: Nimakachi Fusion Products Ltd
    Primary Factory: Tematagi, Lapida II
Communications System: Hartford 200S
Targeting and Tracking System: Hartford TA10

Overview:
Nimakachi Fusion Products Limited, as a corporation with factories located in both the Free Worlds League and the Draconis Combine has been a conduit for technical assistance between the two states since the signing of the Kapteyn Pact. Following the Outreach Conference of 3051, Thomas Marik's assistance to the Coordinator included loans to expand the Nimakachi factory on Lapida II to build Vulcans.

It's rumoured that some of the tooling provided dates back to the original Northwind factory destroyed in the first months of the First Succession War, looted and then stored or used for other purposes over the centuries. Whether this is true or a misdirection as to Combine and League ability to construct new tooling, the Vulcan that marched off the new line was at first thought to be  a slighly modified VL-5T. It wasn't until the Tematagi factory updated to produce it that outside sources confirmed the VL-5K was an advanced Elemental hunter design, merely based on the VL-5T.

Capabilities:
The VL-5K maintains the triple medium laser array that replaces the original autocannon, but upgrades the original medium laser to a much larger extended range laser that restores long-range capability. Mechwarriors are advised to use this or the medium lasers but not both unless they are willing to accept a rapid rise in temperature.

Internally, the heatsinks have been significantly improved with advanced models (the Lapida factory has to import these from the FWL at the moment) but they still struggle to cope with the primarily energy based armament. Upgrading the armour of the Vulcan with ferrofibrous plating has allowed slight improvement of the plating around the slim torso - an all around upgrade given the risk of being swarmed by the Elementals it is intended to hunt.

The other major chance is reducing the ammunition payload and doubling up the left arm machinegun. This cuts endurance of the weapons sharply but given the short-range of the guns and that they are the only weapons installed that use ammunition, this is considered a trivial issue by the DCMS.

Deployment:
The VL-5K has been deployed exclusively to DCMS units along the Clan border and a handful of highly trusted units of the FWLM. It appears the Captain-General is hesitant to place new technology in the field until he has a sufficient number of advanced 'Mechs, something slowed by exports to realms facing the Clans.
