Well first I got to find time to evaluate this contest Abele. I am in the midst of moving so it is taking a wee bit. However I do believe the Koshi is next on deck.

Sorry this took so long to evaluate gang been very busy as of late with happy real-life events so BattleTech is taking a bit of a back seat. Reviewing the five existing canon configurations, seventeen different entries, the ‘Mech of the Week article, and masterarminas As They Should Have Been was a tall order but a lot of fun. Initially I choose eight winners then went back eliminated three and finally decided on a total of ten configurations for the upgraded Fire Moth (Dasher). I am going to go by the configuration and spell out my reasoning a little. Hopefully you agree with the final product but if you don’t please let me know!

Primary Configuration – Here is one I went back and forth a bit. The existing canon loadout just did not do it for me with its different types of SRM launchers it seemed like an odd ball rather than the base for the OmniMech. marauder648 cut out the SRM-4 for 2 Medium Pulses which was interesting as I was looking for a Pulse config but ultimately, I passed because it just didn’t do enough for me. First time around I chose drakensis Primary entry which mounted three SRM-6s which I think is a great concept. However, each launcher only has ten shots a piece and it proved too radical a departure for me to endorse (stay tuned). This left Abele’s rather conservative replacement of the SRM-6 with another SRM-4 and the addition of an ER Small as my choice for the upgraded Primary Configuration for the Fire Moth. Score 1 for Abele.

Alternate Configuration A – The Fire Moth’s canon support configuration needed some work in my eyes and we had plenty of contenders. The Jump Configurations submitted by drakensis and marauder648 quickly earned a spot of their own but I wanted a premier recon asset with all the electronic bells and whistles the Clans could muster (ECM Suite, Active Probe, and TAG). So, stay tuned for jumpers in another configuration to come while we stay focused on configurations that featured those surveillance items. Abele’s A entry was a good one which I considered but unfortunately this ‘on the bubble’ (near winner) design didn’t quite make the grade. Instead drakensis’ D was the one I picked with its anti-infantry weaponry (4 Machine Guns, 2 Flamers, ER Medium Laser) and complete scout package. It was the clear winner to me and my choice for the new Alternate A, score 1 for drakensis.

Alternate Configuration B – For this selection I wanted something with twin Medium Pulses like the canon configuration which I decided after some contemplation needed an upgrade. Unfortunately, I had to immediately disqualify marauder648’s B entry as it featured a Light Active Probe. Please make sure that all future entries for these challenges feature Clan Tech from the Invasion era which is the early 3050s before Heavy Lasers, ATMs, and Light Active Probes. With my Pulse preference which was a late consideration only a couple of Abele designs were so qualified. None more so then Abele’s B entry which got rid of canon’s ECM and A-Pod for three ER Smalls which provided more offensive punch especially against infantry. Score 2 Abele!

Alternate Configuration C – The LRM Fire Moth struck me as something that would mount four or maybe even five LRM 5s with the rest as ammo but the math was tough to make work with just 6.5 tons. The canon version left me unsatisfied and thankfully all three contestants took a shot at replacing it. Abele’s C consolidated the 10 LRMs of the canon design into a single launcher with a ton of ammo and removed the AMS for 2 ER Mediums and a Small Pulse. Despite a good loadout I wanted more LRMs so I went to marauder648 who had the most LRMs with two 10 launchers. Only a dozen shots though between two systems meant six shots and your done plus a Flamer which just didn’t do it for me. This bought me to drakensis’ entry whose LRM-15 with Artemis IV FCS and two tons of ammo was the most efficient long range fire support in my opinion. Score 2 drak!

Alternate Configuration D – My favorite canon Fire Moth (Dasher) configuration was this one which featured 5 ER Medium Lasers tied to a Targeting Computer along with a Flamer. While everyone stepped forward with a challenge I ultimately choose to keep the existing package. marauder648’s B was his closest comparable entry with 6 ER Smalls and 2 Small Pulses all tied to a Targeting Computer. While it was DQ’d I did consider it along with Abele’s D which pulled an ER Medium from the canon loadout and replaced it with two ER Smalls. For me the closest was drakensis’ B which added a Heat Sink to deal with all the high heat generated by the ER Mediums and swapped out 3 of those for 5 ER Smalls. Almost bud but not quite, we will stick with the canon D here.

Alternate Configuration E – For the first expanded configuration, number six, is appropriately an Extended Range sniper which marauder648 came up with. An ER Large Laser tied into a Targeting Computer gives the Fire Moth incredibly accurate long-range firepower. Be hard to hit this one moving so fast at a distance just wearing down opponents with an inexhaustible arsenal. An ER Small provides close in support when necessary while an ECM Suite insures that its Targeting Computer can not be jammed. Very nice work! Score 1 for marauder648.

Alternate Configuration F – Going back to the Primary entries drakensis three SRM-6 entry was just too good to pass up even though it has a limited ammo supply. This machine would have its uses on the battlefield allowing for the utilization of special warheads if so desired. I liked it enough to give it seventh place in our competition. #3 for drakensis.

Alternate Configuration G – Perhaps standing for Big “Gun” this loadout by Abele features the largest main gun of any entry. Bjarni A has an ER PPC which can knock out any Mech opponent with a hit to the head making it a formidable fast striker. Backed up by an ER Small for in close defense I always am I fan of these big gun entries. Bjarni B was somewhat less desirable to me but substituting a Large Pulse Laser is conceivable. That too might receive an honorable mention in the final accounting for ‘G’.  #3 for Abele.

Alternate Configuration J – Jump Jet entries seem only too appropriate to place here for the Fire Moth and we had two good ones which I really liked. marauder648’s entry featured 8 jump jets and so had another ton for an ECM Suite which drakensis did not. Both had an Active Probe and an ER Small but what stood out to me was the maximized jump ability of drak’s. With ten Jump Jets his entry impressed me the most and won another spot in the upgraded Fire Moth. Four for drakensis!!

Alternate Configuration K – Finally for the tenth and final configuration I wanted to put in an idea floated by Bosefius in the Mech of the Week article on the main BattleTech forum into practice. Imagine 10 ER Smalls tied into a Targeting Computer! With a half a ton left over why not put in an A-Pod? This “mini-Nova” would be aptly termed a Knife Fighter for its need to close with opponents to deliver 50 points of possible damage in a single round! I am thinking Goliath Scorpion or Hell’s Horses is the Clan who originally come up with it. Too good a concept for me to pass up so I hope you will all accept it.

So with 4 winning configurations the win goes to drakensis with Abele in second place with 3. marauder648 got on board with one winning entry himself so congratulations everyone, well done! I am thinking about putting this all in Technical Readout 3050: The Quicksilver Upgrades which will be a supplemental fanbook to my first TRO which is still in the works. The next challenge should be up tomorrow night and it probably won’t surprise a lot of you so go and get ready. I’ll see you tomorrow!!

IIRC, the Hellbringer was discontinued in favor of the Ebon Jaguar for the 65-ton assailant role, so you may not have to worry about that one.

Aye and the Ebon Jag's just as under armoured, well not quite so criminally under protected as the Hellbie but it gives it the good 'ol college try :p

Yes and no. Just because something has been discontinued from production by circumstances (see Nova aka the Black Hawk) or a decree by the ilKhan (see the Hellbringer aka the Loki) does not mean certain Clans will not continue to use them and seek to improve them.

For example, lets go to the Hellbringer (Loki) notes I have in my Clan OmniMech Preferences 3054 file.

Quote
The Hellbringer was long the most popular OmniMech of the 65 ton class however two new comers have challenged that status. The Ebon Jaguar in particular was designed to replace it on the battlefield. During the Quicksilver Trails this competition came to a head and despite the Hellbringer distinguished service record it was defeated by the Ebon Jaguar. Angry with the results and at odds with the ilKhan over the Hellbringer’s retirement from primary manufacturing many Clans remain committed to it. Particularly effected by the lose were the Hell's Horses who lost their premier OmniMech line to the Smoke Jaguars. They along with Jade Falcon and Coyote each committed their own resources to Secondary Factories (smaller wholly supplied by an individual Clan facility and thus producing much less than a Primary facility) which still manufacture the Hellbringer. While Goliath Scorpion discontinued their production of the Hellbringer they still prefer it to all other 65 ton OmniMechs currently favored by the ilKhan. Similarly Burrock and Snow Raven have clung to the Hellbringer rather then commit to a new chassis but in time limited production as it currently exist will undoubtedly force them to change. Other Clans have started to look in directions like Ghost Bear which obtained production share for the Cauldron Born and Fire Mandrill for the Crossbow.

Then there is the Nova (Black Hawk) another Clan Hell's Horses design which was out of production for years but was allowed by the ilKhan to compete with the Huntsman (Nobori-Nin) from Clan Nova Cat during the Quicksilver Trials. These combat trials formalized what many already knew relegating the Nova (Black Hawk) to the scrapheap of history so to speak. However, many of these OmniMechs still existed in the service of some Clans (Hell's Horses, Burrock, Snow Raven, Cloud Cobra) who stubbornly refused to move on to other 50 ton designs. While no Clan dedicated any manufacturing (secondary) facility to the Nova (Black Hawk)  the new Quasar which was based on that venerable design allowed all of its components to remain in production. This has insured that the Nova (Black Hawk) will remain in service for some time to come.

I am researching the Random Assignment Tables from Operational Revival Trials to see how many OmniMechs were deployed prior to the Quicksilver Trials so I will run the numbers on these as well. So long story short you just may see these designs for our Quicksilver Upgrades competition. Of course I'd love to hear what you think on the subject so please chime in with questions and/or opinions on the subject.

BTW I am hard at work on the next challenge which should be up tonight. ;)

OVERVIEW
Already in production and popular among several Clans, the Fire Moth is considered unsuitable for combat with the heavier OmniMechs that dominate the Trials fought in the Kerensky Cluster, and losses have been heavy to the Mechanized Infantry (conventional and Battlearmor) and armored vehicles that accompany Inner Sphere forces despite being primarily used to deliver Elementals to the battlefield.
As interest and enthusiasm for the IlKhan’s Quicksilver Trials began to make inroads among the Ghost Bear Warrior Caste, the products of those same Trials began to inflict growing losses in Trials across the Kerensky Cluster.  While still an effective method of delivering Elementals, saKhan Aletha Kabrinski challenged Scientists and Warriors to update and improve its performance in the Cluster and against the forces of the Inner Sphere, attracting both allies and foes from a cross-section of the Clans, in essence widening the Quicksilver Trials across the existing ‘Mechs of the Touman.
Clan Steel Viper was a surprise addition to the project, bidding several Stars of Solahma infantry to obtain access to the data being gathered by the Ghost Bears, although several Clans (both allied and opposing) have taken note of the Fire Moth’s new configurations after field tests confirmed their effectiveness.

CAPABILITIES
One of the fastest OmniMechs built by the Clans, the Fire Moth can easily outpace most Inner Sphere ‘Mechs and vehicles before using its efficiently-designed Configurations to complete its mission, whether defeating the opponent or delivering Elementals to the battlefield.  During the course of the project nearly every Configuration was changed in some way, in most cases at the urging of Solahma Warriors reflecting experience gained over decades in active service both at the controls and fighting against it.
The Prime, with its heavy SRM battery and ammo-independent ER Medium Lasers that allowed it to remain in the field indefinitely won praise from all involved, but Merchants consulted during testing advised replacing the SRM-6 with a second SRM-4 to make ammo resupply in the field easier. Moving it into the Left Torso with another ton of ammunition increased mission endurance substantially, while one of the ER Medium Lasers was moved to the Left Arm where it providing the greatest field of fire. The remaining tonnage was used to add an ER Small Laser to the right arm, compensating for the loss of damage potential at close range.  Proving itself in Trials on Niles, the Hell’s Horses have begun to adopt several of the new configurations as part of their own aggressive Battlearmor tactics.
Considered a mediocre scout, Warriors assigned to Alternate Configuration A frequently found themselves unable to defend themselves effectively when detected, leading Warriors with experience from Operation Revival and the growing use of Fire Moths for high-speed recon to locate guerrillas and ambushes to suggest a radical change.  Retaining the Active Probe and TAG while adding a versatile ECM Suite to assist in the scouting role, the new Configuration is optimized to engage the multiple ‘soft’ targets frequently encountered in ambushes with the substitution of Flamers and Machine Guns.
Closely related to the ‘A’ Configuration, Alternate Configuration B reduces the electronics in favor of an anti-infantry specialist oriented to eliminating enemy Battlearmor and Light vehicles while remaining ammunition free with the exception of a pair of Machine Guns sharing a half-ton of ammunition.  Moving both Medium Pulse Lasers to the arms with ER Small Lasers mounting below (mimicking the Primary Configuration of the Timber Wolf), a third ER Small is mounted in the Left Torso. Split between the two side torsos, ammunition from the right torso feeds both Machine Guns.
Despite the ammo endurance of Alternate Configuration C, the Fire Moth frequently found itself unable to match that endurance with only two tons of Ferro-Fibrous armor across the ‘Mech.  Tested against the Svantovit and Shamash who reach comparable speeds, the Bears elected to rely on the accuracy provided by the Artemis IV system mated with a LRM-15 mounted in the Right Torso to allow the Fire Moth to support friendly units at long range before returning to re-supply before the armor protection is breached, reducing losses and providing a significantly larger impact on the battlefield when available.
Favored as a skirmisher and in augmented Trials by Warriors, Alternate Configuration D remained untouched. Despite heat concerns its five Extended Range Medium Lasers tied to a Targeting Computer along with a Flamer provide superior mid-range offense for this ultra-fast Light OmniMech.
Taking note of the Inner Sphere designs favoring a large, single weapon designed as an ultra-mobile fire support platform, Alternate Configuration E uses an ER Large Laser mounted in the Left Arm with the added accuracy provided by a Targeting Computer to engage effectively at range. An ECM suite makes the Fire Moth a more difficult target, while the remaining tonnage is allocated to the E’s single defensive weapon, an ER Small in the right arm that receives the same benefits.  Embraced by the Scorpions, Hellions, and Spirits, the new Configuration’s mix of firepower and mobility make it a threat that cannot be ignored.
Choosing to replace the entire Configuration with the new B, Steel Viper Warriors assigned to the project suggested a radical combination of specialty ammunition for special circumstances to be utilized by three standard SRM-6s.  The F is equipped with two tons of ammunition, maximizing flexibility while limiting potentially crippling ammunition explosions.
Another Configuration hoping to make the Fire Moth an effective combatant by limiting exposure to the enemy, the G features a single offensive weapon, either an ER PPC (or Large Pulse Laser depending on circumstances).  The defensive ER Small Laser also seen on the E is retained to provide a backup weapon in case of damage or Elemental attack.  Proposed by Star Commander Bjarni of the Ghost Bear contingent re-assigned from the InnerSphere, the G is anticipated to be a popular choice for Trials among Light ‘Mech pilots, especially the Hellions.
Seeking to maximize the ability of the Fire Moth to deliver Elementals through difficult terrain, the G carries an unprecedented ten Jump Jets to cross 300 meters at a time, but relies on a single ER Small Laser to defend itself.  Concerned with the potential of losing this variant, an Active Probe was used to assist in the detection of hidden units.  Anticipated to be restricted to Solahma Warriors, the –J is expected to be used only in unusual circumstances.
Seeking to match the Fire Moth’s immense speed with the maximum short-range firepower and accuracy, the K mimics the layout of the popular Nova OmniMech to deliver a stunning blow with the assistance of the Targeting Computer mounted in the Right Torso. Ten ER Small Lasers across the Arms and Torsos are accompanied by a single A-Pod to defend against conventional infantry at close range. Suggested by Warriors assigned to the project from the Goliath Scorpions, the remaining Clans are considering using the K to replace the D in Trials where skirmishing is expected.

DEPLOYMENT
Having successfully proved the viability of the Fire Moth amongst the six Clans who favored deploying it in a combat role, the outcome of the spate of Trials has caused several others to reconsider their former reluctance to consider it for Front-Line service, at least in the Inner Sphere.  The Smoke Jaguars, hoping to limit the disruption to Front-Line Clusters faced with civil disobedience have deployed the Fire Moth (particularly the –A Configuration) to Solahma Warriors, leading to a surprising number of upsets in Trials of Grievance by Warriors allowed to use standard Configurations.
As Clans such as he Bears and Horses continue to use the Fire Moth’s high ground (and now Jump) mobility to aggressively deploy Elementals. Cloud Cobra which has embraced the ‘ParaJump’ maneuvers have also taken note of how the highly agile J Configuration can enhance their own operations. Other Clans such as the Ice Hellions, Coyotes, and Steel Vipers prefer using several of the most aggressive skirmishing or assault Configurations in roles similar to the old ‘Headhunter’ ‘Mechs of the Star League, penetrating deeply into enemy-held territory to strike with lightning speed either with the support of an Elemental Point or alone.
With the exception of Blood Sprit and Fire Mandrill all the rest of the Clans also utilize the Fire Moth but prefer other twenty-ton designs. Burrock, Diamond Shark, Jade Falcon, Nova Cat, Smoke Jaguar, Steel Viper, and Wolf tend to operate this tiny speed demon infrequently but in traditional ways. While Snow Raven and Star Adder in particular make more extensive use of this light war machine often reserving it for scouting roles rather than dedicated combat duty.

Rules question for everyone, when inputting our Dasher-G (ER PPC) into a design program I keep getting told I need to remove the hand actuator. Rather than doing that I am considering moving it to the Torsos. Thoughts?

Think loosing the hand actuator and leaving it in the arm makes the most sense.

  • Beware of the all-seeing eye: Ice Hellion

Why? There is enough room.

The design program made a big deal of it. Basically if you put an ER PPC in the arm you have remove an actuator. Is this a hard rule? If so how big of a deal is this??
