Wolf Prime, Alpha, Beta
Star Adder Gamma, Delta
Coyote Zeta, Kerensky
Diamond Shark Theta, Iota
Nova Cat Iota, Kappa

Long held as the model for other heavy OmniMechs to try and eclipse. Hated yet respected by many of their enemies. Foughten over number times since it first came off the production lines in 2945. The Timber Wolf has become the nightmare to numerous Spheroids since it first was spotted in the periphery by now Khan Phelan Ward and named the MadCat by ComStar's Anastasius Focht. Utilizing still 100 years after its conception the top of the line in all construction materials and methods. There was little call by Wolf warriors to upgrade the commonly seen configurations within the Clans. It wasn't until Khan Natasha Kerensky and saKhan Phelan Ward who both sought to make their units even faster post-Tukayyid made defending the exclusivity of the Timber Wolf less of a priority that this changed as an unintended consequence.

This decision had much greater impact within the Wolf Touman than was expected by the Khans. Many ardent Crusader Wolves challenged this decision and learned the hard way through Trials that the claws of Khan Kerensky have not dulled due to her age and time amongst the Spheroids, nor that the fangs of saKhan Ward are frail and brittle like some have rumored. Using this anger that the Crusader Wolves were feeling the Khans called for them to allay them towards their trothkin and defend the production rights against the Clans attempting to take it like true warriors on the field of battle. Though nearly all Clans attempted to achieve the rights to produce the Timber Wolf as a secondary mech the Crusader Wolves were only able to defend the acquisition of it from a handful of them. Loosing the rights to Nova Cats, Star Adders, Coyote & Diamond Shark they were able to triumph against the Jaguars, Hell's Horses, Ice Hellions, Bears, Vipers and Ravens.

With some very minor changes to Wolf configurations, these new Timber Wolf producing Clans are beginning to give the Timber Wolf a makeover in their own image based on their own needs and tactical ideals.

Downgrading the standard Twin LRM 20s for the smaller LRM 15s at first looks like a questionable move by Wolf Engineers, but the addition of Artemis Fire Control Systems to the twin launchers ensures that a higher consistent barrage of missiles strike their target. As an additional bonus is the increased ammo capacity this allows the design for any new extended missions. Dropping the Medium Pulse and Twin Machine Guns again for additional ammo capacity for its main weaponry in its LRM systems.

Alpha Config has made the simple move of removing of a singular Medium Pulse Laser and 3 of its pod mounted Double Heat Sinks. Adding instead an additional Streak SRM 6 Launcher to exploit those weaknesses left by its twin ER PPCs. While this may strain the designs heat sinks it does ensure potential heat savings when its Streak systems fail to lock on target.

The last of the Wolf Configs it is the furthest in departure from its original. Stripping all of its weaponry besides the devastating Gauss Cannon. Wolf Designers have gone for a more direct fire and command configuration. Pairing the Gauss Cannon now with an ER PPC instead of its more accurate and shorter ranged Large Pulse Laser ensures the design has a range advantage verse most other foes. Stripping its SRM and LRM Pack as well as its singular Small Pulse Laser and instead replacing it with a trio of Extended Range Medium Lasers for those foes that close the distance. Outfitted now with an Active Probe and ECM suite to counter advanced targeting systems of its opponents and ensure the pilot is not surprised by an hidden foes it may come across.

The first of the designs rolling off the Star Adder's new Timber Wolf production line on Sheridan. The Adders have adopted and modified the Wolves original D configuration and made it their own.
Removing the twin ER PPCs which while quite devastating ensured the design would overheat if ever the 'Mech moved and fired the two at the same time. Downgrading to twin Extended Range Large Lasers gives a slight range advantage as well as a buffer for its heat concerns. Downgrading from the Quad Streak SRM 6 packs the Adders have replaced them with 6 Streak SRM 4 packs. Adder engineers have done this as it may fool opponents into believing the 'Mech is actually armed with LRM 15s until such time as the 'Mech fires. An additional heat sink was added as an afterthought but it still overheats when alpha striking its opponents.

The second of the configs from the Star Adders is a new configuration offered to the Clans. Inspired by the Prime config of Wolves it removes the twin ER Large Lasers and adds an additional twin LRM 15s for increased indirect fire. Bolstering its existing twin ER Medium Lasers with an additional two for when opponents close the distance. Adders have been pairing the Wolf's Primary with their own configuration for impressive fire support stars.

The Coyotes have gone in a new direction with their take of the Timber Wolf. Removing the inconsistent firepower of Long Range Missiles, the Coyotes have instead added a twin battery of Ultra AC/5s. Paired with the twin Extended Range Lasers this design can harass opponents at long range. Pilots have been known for swapping out the Ultra AC for their LBX counterparts for partnering with the traditional Zeta config for assistance in Aerospace and the occasional contest with Hell's Horses or Blood Spirits and their vehicles.

Diamond Sharks entrance into the Timber Wolf market had some observers questioning their weapons selections until they realized that the choices somewhat mirrored the Sharks Phoenix Hawk II design. Relying on the same Ultra AC 10 for its primary damage and instead of its twin counterpart adding an ER Large Laser and LBX 5 for extreme range damage capability. Bolstered by a pair of ER Medium Lasers for opponents that close in.

The Sharks second unique configuration again has gone the route of removing the iconic shoulder mounted missile pods and with this config gone for a route where it does not need to rely on ammunition resupplies. They had instead gone with the choice of ER PPC and Large Pulse to pair with its iconic twin ER Large Lasers. This design runs hotter than the Cats counterpart but it has increased damage capacity.

The Cats have choosen to make the Timber Wolf into a command mech for its Heavy Trinaries. Downgrading again its LRM pods to 10's. They also removed its secondary ER Medium Lasers instead adding an Active Probe and ECM Suite as well as twin Anti Missile Systems to knock down incoming missile fire.

Like the Sharks the Cats have also chosen to go with an energy boat configuration. Twin ER Larges are instead paired with Twin Large Pulse Lasers. Nine additional double heat sinks are not enough to counter this massive heat per barrage but it can lay continuous fire down for an acceptable period of time before it needs to stop the firing of one of its lasers to cool off.

I WIN I returned the Iconic ER Small Laser[/size][/b]

Oh I know but I'm late to the party. Now that my configs are up I can look what others did to see if need to alter any so not the same. I still need to do Config fluff but thats minor and will take a few mins tomorrow.

Well just remember that slight variation is enough to consider a difference in entered configs. Tie breakers for the exact same configurations entered are best fluff and lastly time entered which this time around you draw the short straw bud. There is also the option that folks can work together on a vision as part of a team. This hasn't been done yet for the Upgrades part of Quicksilver but if you believe strongly that a certain configuration is so perfect work with a like minded designer and you could share a point.

Oh i know you Bradshaw, always scheming something.

Your first instinct is usually right

Anyone have some design toughts on the Timber Wolf? Is it a favorite of yours? Overrated? Would have done something different?

Night Gyr is better to me differences in speed isnt enough to make it worth those lost tons in engine weight. Plus it has added mobility in its jump jets

Well i am compiling the numerous Timber Wolf variants various characters have used over the course of my Battletech playing days. It is a pretty big list so i must have a soft spot for this design.

The thing about the 75 ton weight bracket IIRC is that it hits 2 sweet spots: it's optimal for 5/8 with a XL engine and it's in the optimal slot for a 4/6 with a SFE (75-85 tons). Both are relatively expensive compared to smaller designs with the same engine/speed arrangement but you get the most effective tonnage from them.

So the Timber Wolf is basically ideal as a chassis for the Clans with their fast-heavy bias and it gets star billing in the initial Clan views with Aidan Pryde using one during the invasion and it being the first clan Mech seen by the Inner Sphere with Phelans battle ROMs.

And you can also make a fearsome pocket assault mech with a 4/6 XL which gave us the Night Gyr.

If i was to build a series of mechs for a clan from scratch. I'd center it around 300 XL engine with 30 50 60 75 and 100 tonners using it for resource savings purposes

And that would be all you need. Less is more, as they say. Cuts down on logistic strain as all engines, gyros and cockpits would be the same size. Another possible engine that works well is the 240XL as it covers five weights as well (20/30/40/60/80)

I could see a clan like Ice Hellion doing that one as it covers more of the lighter side of the spectrum.

Enough thread drift Bradshaw. Please keep on topic with the Timber Wolf.

We've had numerous discussions on these engine topics on OBT over the years.
