A Wolf's Tale
« on: June 08, 2010, 01:05:18 AM »

A short story I'm playing around with figured I'd share it with you guys.

A Wolf's Tale
A Short Story By Blacktigeractual
Chapter One

In which I perform some badly needed pest control and take a shower.

What the fuck is it with vampires?  I thought as the Twilight wannabe with the ridged brow and piss colored eyes leaps on me.   The haft of my fire axe takes him in the gut and he woofs in surprise.  I come around with the axe head hitting the idiot in the temple.  The blade cuts through dickhead's head and out the other side.

I mean trust me they ain't sexy.  Unless you're one of these assholes into the Vampire Diaries or some such shit.  Sorry I like my girls to be living, breathing, and sans a demon in their soul.

I guess it was close enough to beheading for whoever writes the laws for such things and a puff of foul smoke and ashes is all that's left.

Sorry Jordan, your boyfriend won't be taking you to the prom.

The fact that he also won't be sucking the life out of her and anyone else will be small comfort.  The funny thing is that everybody knows they exist, but nobody believes'  Or at least they don't want to.  As I wipe the sweat off my forehead I smell something like a week dead corpse.  The wolf-spirit inside me snarls and I spin, axe coming up If had been anyone else, Id have paused, hesitated.

The girl would have been pretty if the spirit sight didnt show me her soul.   Instead she looks like a corpse left out in the sun too long.  I knew her.   Helen Collins, Jordans best friend, missing for a week.  Piss gold eyes widen as my axe cuts through her neck.

Ashes to Ashes, Dust to Dust

Naturally my leap takes me through the cloud of burning ash and well thats the thing about dead tick; it gets everywhere.  Your nose, your mouth, your hair; you reek of it later.  I spit it out and sneeze, hawking up a lunger full of dead leech.

Looking around while wiping my mouth, I decide to have a quick look around then head home, its only midnight, but Ive already put closure on two missing persons cases.  Not what I was hoping for but whats done is done.

A search of the surrounding area turns up a beat up old van under a reservoir inlet far enough back to shelter it from the gloomy Leighton sun.  I reach into my pack and toss a homemade incendiary in the back.  Its the wet season here in Washington State so nothing is gonna go off and start a forest fire and I dont want anybody else to use the van.

The cute couple had amassed a couple hundred dollars and a few credit cards.  Id drop the cards off with Sheriff Delaney, but the cash?  Hunting things that go bump in the night isnt lucrative and hey a guys gotta make a living.  Nobody was dumb enough to touch my Mustang and the ride home was uneventful.

D.J. was asleep when I got home.  My combination surrogate mom/big sister/best buddy had been all day in Seattle purchasing rare books.  I knew she was also seeing that professor she liked.

Good for you, Deej, hope ya got laid.

The shower was heaven, Laws may make us civilized but showers keep us that way.  Toweling off I look at myself in the mirror; six one, one eighty pounds, no fat.  My face has been described as either too pretty or feral depending on my mood.  The wolf in me keeps me lean and muscular despite a serious appetite for fresh killed meat and a secret love of Ding Dongs.  My dark brown hair hangs in a wild tangle down my back; in the sun it has hints of red and gold.

I look pretty normal, like any late teenaged rocker fan.  Like Im human.  Like I used to be.  My canines tend to be a giveaway; a double set on the top, slightly longer than the human norm.  My eyes complete the picture.  Jade green with what I call my kill rings they show the wolf that lives inside.  Brittany, the bartender down at the Pussycat Lounge says theyre my best feature.

Most people dont look me in the eyes much, even my friends.

My friend's youngest is of that age...so I sympathize I'll post more of this later, trying to work up the mojo again as I have no clue what to do with the second novel or Wedding Bells so it may be a bit.  Some timesto get a bit of perspective you have to take a step back.

Second novel? Wedding Bells? I think I missed something here.

I do agree about stepping back from a story once in a while to get back in the groove to write it.

Takiro, if you need a little short piece of fiction for any future supplement, I can work on that.

The Pussycat Lounge is as typical a strip joint as it's name suggests.  Dark and dingy where it isn't bright neon and garish decorations.  It's still mostly a bar and the kitchen is open 24/7.

Mitch the bouncer at the door passes me through with a nod.  He felt the need to test me once, after he got out of the hospital we've been tight.  Good thing too since I tutor his eldest in math.

I still feel bad about the hospital thing.

I grab my usual spot at the bar by the register.  Britt smiles at me.  Behind the bar the drain platform, some wood planks, sits high enough to let the raven haired bartender look me in the eye.

Brittany MacConnell former head cheerleader at Townsend High, hell she was the goddamn homecoming queen.  Married the quarterback, divorced his ass a year later.  You'd think what she'd been through with that piece of shit and where she ended up would have broken her, but she's one of the strongest people I know.

She passes me a cold one that tastes like heaven after tonight's fun. I chug half the mug and find myself looking into her deep brown eyes.

"Zup B?" Too bad I ain't livin' a normal life Britt, ya may got a a couple of years on me but..  I shut that line of thought down.

"Long night, got some bad news for Sheriff Delaney."

Her face fell, strong yes, poker face not so much.

"Petey Russo...?"

"Among others, gonna close a few cold case files tonight.  Pete had Hellen Collins as a playtoy up there."

"Jordan's gonna freak..."

"It's not a good night for anyone, honey."

A booming voice and a huge hand on my shoulder interrupted us.  Joe Delaney (never call him Joesy, his dad's penchant for Clint Eastwood movies was a sore point.) was a big man going soft around the middle.

Don't let the "Bubba the Hick" appearance fool you, Joe is sharper than half the FBI and Wall street types I knew in New York. He uses his appearance as a tool.  A damn effective one at that.

That said, only the fact I'd smelled him through the miasma of smoke in the club kept the Wolf at bay.  Sneaking up on me is not the best way to keep yourself healthy.  Britt saw the smoldering fire in my eyes.  A gentle smile and the touch of her warm hand sent my feral half swooning off to never never land.

I nodded at Joe.  He raised his eyebrows as I handed him the stack of ID's and credit cards.

"Some more for the files, Sheriff, plus close out Peter Russo and Helen Collins."

Closing his eyes Leighton's sheriff muttered a curse and a prayer.  Opening brown eyes that looked like those of a Bassett hound I'd had as a kid he fixed me with a stare.

"It's getting worse out there, Winter."

"Something's definitely up, Sheriff, but I'll be damned if I can say what..."

"You talk to Naomi?"  He said carefully.

"You'd better do it, she'd lie to me even if it meant the end if the world..."

"Oh come on, kid, I've known her since she was I'm pigtails, she was always the sweetest kid...". Joe shook his grizzled head.  "She can't blame you for what that bitch Dru...". My growl cut him off.

Everybody involved knew I wasn't to blame, after all my soul, what made me me was trapped in a little crystal sphere held in a mad English vampire's purse.

But anyway remember what I said about knowing somethin' and believing it?

Yah, it's like that.

Memories flood me as I drive home.  Naomi laughing at an offhand remark I'd made.  The first time we'd made love...

Sitting in math class, viewing as if from afar...

The teacher, damned if I can remember her name was droning on something 'bout logic.  In my prison of glass I could sense the demon's amusement.  Little fucker could do calculus in his head.

Naomi knew me well enough she could see somethin' was wrong.  Concern furrowed her brow.  Brushing her golden brown curls back from her face she smiled and touched my arm.  I felt my hand clasp hers.

She gasped then, Naomi had always been sensitive to the supernatural, she'd become one hell of a witch.  That didn't help her though.

I couldn't do a damn thing to help her either as my hand squeezed hers painfully.

"Scream and I'll butcher everyone in the room."

With that I (not me, damn it not me!) crushed her wrist...
