Silly frost rats.

Should I challenge you?

Masterarminas, I am really wondering why the Clans wouldn't bring more Second Line units to the Invasion?
After all, they now know how hard it is to "convert" people.

Clan arrogance?  Overall, many Clans (not all, but many) probably feel that the '2nd-rate' warriors did not do their job in pacifying Chainelane . . . or needed overwhelming force to do so.  True borns will do better.   :(  They are wrong, but that thought is still going through many of their leaders heads.  Also, they have to protect their possessions in the Homeworlds.  While probably still thinking that with the reduction-in-forces there, THEY are going to be the ones to gain the strategic enclaves that they have always wanted.

And they ARE bringing far more second-line/garrison forces than the canon Invasion . . . just not nearly enough.  Heck, the Clans don't have ENOUGH if they brought every last garrison cluster forward, IF they are going to be forcing the conquered IS planets into the Clan way.  If they just change the flag and gradually change, maybe they will have enough.  Maybe.  But how likely is that?

Clan Totals
Front Line Clusters:  24
Garrison Clusters:  20
WarShips:  16

Jade Falcon Touman Organization and Overview
Clan Jade Falcon uses the traditional organization for its front-line Clusters:  three OmniMech Trinary, one Elemental Trinary, and one OmniFighter Trinary.  Transport is provided by three DropShips (an Overlord-C class, a Sassanid class, and a Charybdis class) with every Clusters being assigned one Odyssey-class JumpShip.  The fourth docking collar is normally used for a cargo vessel carrying fuel, munitions, and spare parts for the Cluster.

Second line/garrison Clusters are almost identical:  each has three Trinary of BattleMechs, one Infantry Trinary with 10 vehicles and 250 Conventional Infantry, and one Trinary of Aerospace Fighters.  Each Cluster is equipped with three DropShips (one Overlord-C class, one Seeker-C class, and a Charybdis class), but unlike front line Clusters, JumpShips are not permanently assigned to garrison units.

The Falcons do not have the largest Merchant Fleet, but they do have a respectable one, fielding 5 Wanderer-class, 5 Voyager-class, 5 Traveler-class, 20 Odyssey-class, 20 Discovery-class, and 20 Aggressor-class in their active fleet.  An additional 5 Odyssey-class, 10 Discovery-class, and 10 Aggressor-class are in mothball reserve at the Orbital Naval Cache over Ironhold.

The Jade Falcon Touman has a total strength of 124 JumpShips (5 Wanderer-class, 5 Voyager-class, 5 Traveler-class, 49 Odyssey-class, 30 Discovery-class, and 30 Aggressor-class), 216 military DropShips (including 40 Assault DropShips), 390 civilian DropShip, 1080 OmniMechs, 900 BattleMechs, 200 Vehicles, 1,010 OmniFighters, 600 Aerospace Fighters, 1800 Elementals, and 5000 Conventional Infantry.

Operation Revival
The Falcons are deploying four front line Galaxies and three full second line Galaxies for Operation Revival, along with 75% of their active Fleet Strength.  Having won sole possession of the system of Vannes (a high honor, considering that it is the closest world in the Isles to the Inner Sphere), the Falcons descended upon the single inhabited planet in that system in 3005 full of wrath and fury.  Rho Galaxy, comprised entirely of free-born Warriors and those true-borns whose dedication to the Falcon Way were in question, quickly conquered the world.  In a fashion, the Falcons were fortunate in that these dredges of Falcon society were the ones charged with bringing Vannes under the Falcon Wing.  They responded less violently to provocations than ‘real’ Falcons would have and managed to end all resistance to Falcon rule by 3025.  Since then, the population of Vannes has been slowly and inexorably converted to the true path (although recent True Born arrivals from the Homeworlds still find their taste for contractions, amongst other things, to be signs of their insolence).  Still, this integration into Clan culture has called many True Borns to believe that can accomplish the same thing, in a shorter time frame once the Invasion begins in force.

Three Galaxies remain in the Homeworlds:  the front line Sigma and the second line/garrison Lambda and Omega, along with the Gauntlet Naval Star.  One second line/garrison Cluster from Lambda and Omega are assigned to each of the eight Falcon enclaves:  Dagda, Eden, Gatekeeper, Glory, Ironhold, Marshall, Strana Mechty, and Tokasha.  Sigma Galaxy remains concentrated on Ironhold for rapid deployment

NOTES:  I have made some changes to the Falcon Touman, primarily (but not limited to) the size of the Falcon Fleet.  I mean, it was seriously out of whack in canon.  All of those cruisers and larger ships and almost no escorts?  Anyway, this is more in line with what I picture for these Clans.  The size of the Touman has been reduced as well, but the Falcons still field the single largest force among the Clans, with 44 Clusters in total, eleven more than the smallest (Clan Goliath Scorpion).  I have also removed those Galaxy Command Stars; having a separate Star just complicates transport so much.

What is the reasoning for having the Clans much closer in strength?

That is a good question.

As written, we have Clans (pre-Revival) that are more than twice as strong as the smallest Clans  This always struck me as odd because in the Clan traditions, such a weak Clan as the Scorpions (24 Clusters, front line and second line, no PGCs) should have been absorbed.  Especially with their isolationist tendacies, their abuse of necrosia, and all the things that made them different from other Clans.  Same with the Cloud Cobras and Ice Hellions.  They were just simply too small to exist as independent Clans in the Homeworlds.

In canon, that is explained by a hand-wave and 'oh, those Clans just didn't expand.'  The others took advantage of opportunites and did.

Well, that could be the case.  The Wolves absorbed the Widowmakers and the Jaguars did the same with Clan Mongoose.  But the Falcons?  The Bears?  How did they grow to 60+ cluster powerhouses where the Wolves didn't?

And what about those 'middle-tier' Clans?  Like the Cats and the Vipers and the Horses?  A lot of the why behind how the Clans are came about from the end result the writers wanted.

In this AU, I am starting from looking at the 20 Clans facing off against each other.  The Wolverine Annihilation happens in 2823, followed quickly by the Widowmaker Absorption (on the heels of the death of Nicholas Kerensky) in 2834.  The Clans began to settle down in the aftermath of this, but then just a little more than decade later, Clan Mongoose gets Absorbed.

This was a wakeup call.  Sure, the Mongeese (??) had infuriated everyone, but now all of the 'weaker' Clans saw that they too were in danger.

In this AU, that event (the Mongoose Absorption) causes the Scorpions and the Hellions and the Cobras and the Ravens to begin building up their strength . . . to stave off the possibility of a future Absorption.  Meanwhile, the second-tier Clans (Spirits, Burrocks, Sharks, Mandrlls, Horses, Cats, Adders, and Vipers) begin to 'tag-team' the more powerful Coyotes, Bear, Falcons, Jaguars, and Wolves.

As the lead Clans are constantly under attack (Trial, but you get the drift), their forces are not rapidly expanding, closing the gap between them and the growing second-tier Clans, even as the third-tier are also becoming stronger.   Eventually, the Coyotes fall from top-tier into second, even as the Adders rise.  The balance is maintained, even if the players change.  The Coyotes, for example, destroy Kindraa Smythe-Jewel not only because they are pissed at that Kindraa, but to show the other Clan that despite their slipping, they were still a powerful force.

And, as one of the second-rank Clans (Star Adder) begins to garner too much power, the others take it down a peg.  It is a delicate balance of power in the Homeworlds where all Khans fear that being shown as weak can lead to an Absorption Trial . . . and even a successful Trial of Refusal will weaken the Clan even more.  In much the same fashion, the Hellions have managed to step up a peg, leaving just the Cobras, Scorpions, and Ravens with 33 Clusters or less (bottom tier), while those at the very top all field 40+ Clusters.

That's why there haven't been any Absorptions since the mid 2800s . . . all sides know well how tricky it is to carry off, because the damage a Clan can inflict during a Refusal might be enough to jeopardize even one of the most powerful Clans position in the heirarchy.

For this AU, the smallest Clan can field 31 Clusters (front line and second line/garrison; the Scorpions) whereas the strongest (Jade Falcon) brings 44 to the field.  I've also reduced overall Fleet sizes and strengths to take that wild card out of the equation (even the Ravens aren't going to have much more than two dozen ships in their Fleet, but it will still be the largest and most powerful in the homeworlds).

Anyway, that is just some thoughts and ideas I have had on the reasons behind why the Clans are far more equal in size and power.  With equality being a relative variable.

Seems reasonable and an interesting way to achieve it.

The Piranha Principle applied to the Clans essential. Makes sense in a way. How did the Mandrills get out of the third tier Clan status where they should be? IMO anyway..

The Mandrills have always been a fairly powerful Clan, though far from the largest.  Their problem was their internal divisions.  Now, with that eliminated (addressed in the Fire Mandrill post), they have managed to build up to a strength of 37 Clusters . . . putting themselves solidly in the middle tier.

Even fractured (and after the destruction of Kindraa Symthe-Jewel), the Mandrills maintained (in canon) 30 Clusters.  That would put them in the bottom tier, except that they have now increased their strength . . . all of the Clans have over the past century.  They started in the second tier and have remained there through good and bad all the way up to the present.

In this AU at least.

Clan Totals
Front Line Clusters:  17
Garrison Clusters:  20
WarShips:  14

Nova Cat Touman Organization and Overview
Clan Nova Cat fields 50 OmniMechs, 75 Elementals, and 20 OmniFighters in their front-line Clusters organized in a Command Binary of 10 OmniMechs, three Battle Trinary of 10 OmniMechs and 25 Elementals, an OmniMech Binary, and an OmniFighter Binary.  Transport assets consist of a Traveler-class JumpShips and five DropShips (an Overlord-C class that houses all three Battle Trinary, two Union-C class for the Command and OmniMech Binary, and two Carrier class for the OmniFighter Binary).

Second line/garrison forces have a Command Binary of 10 BattleMechs, a BattleMech Binary, two mixed Trinary of 10 BattleMechs and 10 vehicles, an Infantry Trinary of 10 vehicles and 250 conventional infantry, and a Binary of Aerospace Fighters, for a total strength of 40 BattleMechs, 30 vehicles, 250 conventional infantry, and 20 Aerospace Fighters.  Transport assets consist of four DropShips (one Fortress-C class for the BattleMech Binary and Infantry Trinary, one Overlord-C class for the Command Binary and both Mixed Trinary, and two Carrier class for the Aerospace Fighter Binary).  JumpShips are normally not assigned on a permanent basis to garrison forces in the Nova Cat Touman.

With fourteen WarShips, the Nova Cat Fleet is not particularly large, but it is well-handled and exquisitely trained—it is more of a rapier than a sledgehammer.  The Clan’s Merchant Fleet is large and robust, and has been built to minimize difficulties with logistics.  The Cats retain one hundred Odyssey-class JumpShips on active duty, with an additional 30 Odyssey-class in mothballs at their Naval Cache orbiting Barcella.

Total force strength for the Nova Cat Touman is 147 JumpShips (17 Traveler-class, 130 Odyssey-class), 181 military DropShips (including 16 Assault DropShips), 528 civilian DropShips, 850 OmniMechs, 800 BattleMechs, 600 vehicles, 540 OmniFighters, 400 Aerospace Fighters, 1725 Elementals, and 5000 Conventional Infantry.

Operation Revival
The Cats won joint possession of Far Reach along with the Ice Hellions.  While the Hellions are not the best of neighbors (and have seen significant resistance to their rule), the Nova Cat enclaves have been pacified and are fairly quite.  Having committed six Galaxies to the Invasion (three front-line and three second-line), the Cats are planning to shine in the coming years ahead.

With seven enclaves in the Homeworlds and three Galaxies to garrison them with (one front line and two garrison), the Cats are spread thin, but retain a sizeable reserve in their Gamma Galaxy and Thunderbolt Naval Star (both based on Barcella).  Each enclave has one cluster from Rho and Upsilon Galaxy assigned as the permanent garrison force (Barcella has two Clusters) while Gamma and the Thunderbolts serve as rapid reaction forces to deal with any incursion into Cat territory.

Garrison Clusters:  16

Smoke Jaguar Touman Organization and Overview
Although smaller than Clans Jade Falcon and Wolf in overall strength, the Jaguars field the largest number of front line Clusters of any Clan, albeit at the expense of garrison forces.  Each Jaguar front line Cluster contains one Command Star of 5 OmniMechs, three OmniMech Trinary, one Elemental Trinary, and a Binary of OmniFighters (for a total strength of 50 OmniMechs, 75 Elementals, and 20 OmniFighters).  Transport consists of a Traveler-class JumpShip with five attached DropShips (one Union-C class for command and supplies, one Overlord-C class, one Sassanid class, and two Carrier class).  In addition, each front-line Galaxy and the Clan Command Keshik have a Trinary of 15 OmniMechs assigned, plus one Aggressor-class JumpShip and two DropShips (a Union-C class and an Assault DropShip, typically a Noruff class).

Second line/garrison Clusters use older equipment and contain all of the Clan’s freebirth; only True-born Clan Warriors serve in the front line formations.  Each consists of a Command Star of 5 BattleMechs, three Trinary of BattleMechs, one Infantry Trinary of 10 vehicles and 250 Conventional Infantry, and a Binary of Aerospace Fighters.  Second line/garrison forces lack dedicated JumpShips, but are assigned five DropShips:  one Union-C class for command and supplies, one Overlord-C class, one Condor-C class, and two Carrier class.

The Jaguars have a solid Fleet that is built around a Battle Cruiser and two Cruisers, although they lack any battleships (the one that the Jaguars gained access to, the Clan Mongoose Ship Quicksilver Mongoose, they sent to the breakers).  This lack of a battleship is an itch that the Jaguars have (to date) not been able to scratch; their poor relationship with the Ravens ensures that Clan will not be building them one, and the other Khans have consistently blocked Jaguar attempts to seize one of their active battleships.  And while there are half a dozen SLDF battleships remaining in the Central Naval Cache orbiting Strana Mechty, the Jaguars lack of shipyards means they cannot refit one and restore it to service, even if the other Clans agreed to allow them to withdraw one of these vessels.

On the civilian side, the Jaguars Fleet is quite small, with just 45 JumpShips (5 Traveler-class, 10 Discovery-class and 30 Aggressor-class) on active duty, and an additional 4 Odyssey-class and 10 Discovery-class in mothballs over the Jaguar capital of Huntress.

Overall, Clan Smoke Jaguar fields 90 JumpShips (30 Traveler-class, 4 Odyssey-class, 20 Discovery-class, and 36 Aggressor-class), 238 military DropShips, 166 civilian DropShips, 1340 OmniMechs, 800 BattleMechs, 160 Vehicles, 690 OmniFighters, 320 Aerospace Fighters, 2325 Elementals, and 4000 Conventional Infantry as part of its Touman.

Operation Revival
With ten enclaves in the Homeworlds (and an eleventh in the Chainelane Isles), the Jaguars have the largest holdings of any of the Clans of Kerensky.  This does stretch their strength, however.  Despite having to secure these many enclaves, the Jaguars have committed four front line and two garrison Galaxies to Operation Revival, along with two Naval Stars.

Zeta Galaxy (a front line unit) and the Tau and Kappa Garrison Galaxies remain to protect their worlds.  One Cluster each from Tau and Kappa are assigned to the enclaves of Atreus, Circe, Eden, Kirin, Londerholm, Stacha (in the Tanite worlds, seized from Clan Cloud Cobra in 3044), Tranquil, and Vinton.  Zeta has four Clusters stationed on Huntress and the fifth on Strana Mechty . . . a noticeable reduction in the defenses of the Jaguar capital from normal standards.  The Korat Naval Star also remains on station at Huntress.

In the Isles, the Jaguars are the sole owners of the system of Fredotto, with a pre-invasion population of nearly 60 million.  The planet has proved itself to be a sullen and resistive enclave, however, spurring the Jaguars to such acts of brutality that gives other Crusader Clans pause.  Sporadic violence continues to this day.  Contrary to the plans for Operation Revival, the Jaguars have steadfastly refused to build any military production factories on Fredotto; all of the Jaguar facilities are concentrated on their capital of Huntress in the Homeworlds.  Immense warehouses have been constructed that stockpile munitions, parts, and equipment, but all replacements for the Jaguars must either be purchased (or seized in a Trial) from other Clans or be transported from Huntress to Fredotto.  To keep saboteurs from attacking the warehouses, the Jaguars relocated all native civilians from a one hundred mile area surrounding the Port.  Those who resisted or protested were shot.

Well, they do have long range strategic plans:  conquer Terra, become the ilClan and force all others to do their bidding!   :o  Of course, that sounds pretty much like all of those great super-villian plans that start with . . . "first, kill the Batman."   ;D

Seriously, that is their goal.  They (well, their current leadership) currently believes that if they become the ilClan, the others will have to follow their example, and then the Clans will reign over all forever and ever.  It is extremely unrealistic, but they believe that with an almost religious fervor.  To their mind, the Inner Sphere wlll fold at their advance because Kerensky promised it would be so.  The reason they have no factories on Fredotto is the famed Jaguar paranoia.  They keep all of their factories on Huntress, where no one dares to assault them.  And they are too rigid to make even this one exception.

Clan Totals
Front Line Clusters:  17
Garrison Clusters:  15
WarShips:  25

Snow Raven Touman Organization and Overview
None question the Snow Raven command of the orbitals; in the sphere of WarShips, they are matched by none, and outnumber their closest rival (the Diamond Sharks) by nearly a third.  But, where they are powerful indeed in space, they field one of the smallest ground Toumans.  At a mere 32 Clusters, they fall squarely in the lowest tier of the Clans (with Blood Spirit and Cloud Cobra) and outnumber only the Goliath Scorpions.

But the lack of numbers does not tell the full story.  Despite lies to the contrary, they remain capable Warriors with a very concentrated ground Touman.  Those who mistake the Ravens for weaklings in combat on the ground are liable to see only defeat at their hands.

Raven front-line Clusters are divided into Raven Battle Clusters (including the Corvus Keshik) compromised almost exclusively of heavy OmniMechs (although a handful of assault-weight war-machines are present), the Raven Regulars which use a balanced force of medium and heavy weight designs, and the Striker Clusters, who field just light and medium-weight OmniMechs.  Otherwise, front line units follow the same structure:  each fields a Command Trinary with 10 OmniMechs and 25 Elementals, two Trinary of OmniMechs, a Supernova of 10 OmniMechs and 50 Elementals, and a Binary of OmniFighters, for a total of 50 OmniMechs, 75 Elementals, and 20 OmniFighters.  Transport is a Voyager-class JumpShip, with six DropShips:  one Overlord-C class, two Union-C class, two Carrier class, and one Assault DropShip, typically a Death Dancer class, although the newly introduced Moriggan class (based on the SLDF Pentagon) has been slowly increasing in numbers.

Second line/garrison Clusters are built around a Command Star of 5 BattleMechs, three Trinary of 10 BattleMechs and 10 vehicles each, one Infantry Trinary with 10 vehicles and 250 Conventional Infantry, and a Binary of Aerospace Fighters (total strength of 35 BattleMechs, 40 vehicles, 20 Aerospace Fighters, and 250 Conventional Infantry).  Each Cluster has their own Voyager-class JumpShip for transport, with six DropShips:  one modified Overlord-C class, one modified Union-C class, one Seeker-C class, two Carrier class, and one Assault DropShip.

WarShip assets are impressive, with the Ravens fielding twenty-five Warships in six Naval Stars . . . including four Battleships.  Two of those Battleships are Nightlord-class, which the Ravens have modified, removing the internal ‘Mech bays and all but 75 of the Elemental bays to instead carry a total of 90 OmniFighters (including the 20 fighter bays that are normally part of the ship) and additional stocks of fuel and munitions.

With only four enclaves in the Homeworlds, one would expect that the Ravens have a fairly small civilian Fleet; one would be wrong.  Second only to the Diamond Sharks in size, the Raven Merchant Fleet is normally available for other Clans to hire as needed, giving the Clan a steady stream of resources.  The active duty Raven Fleet consists of 10 Wanderer-class, 20 Voyager-class, 20 Traveler-class, 20 Odyssey-class, 20 Discovery-class, and 20 Aggressor-class JumpShips, with 10 Odyssey-class, 10 Discovery-class, and 10 Aggressor-class in mothball reserve orbiting Lum.

174 JumpShips (10 Wanderer-class, 54 Voyager-class, 20 Traveler-class, 30 Odyssey-class, 30 Discovery-class, and 30 Aggressor-class), 246 military DropShips (including 86 Assault DropShips), 618 civilian DropShips, 850 OmniMechs, 525 BattleMechs, 600 vehicles, 960 OmniFighters, 300 Aerospace Fighters, 2325 Elementals, and 3750 Conventional Infantry.

Operation Revival
The Ravens are committing three front line Galaxies, two garrison Galaxies, and four Naval Stars to Operation Revival, leaving just one front line Galaxy (Gamma), one garrison Galaxy (Kappa) and two Naval Stars to hold their possessions in the Homeworlds.  Brim and Circe each have two Clusters from Kappa assigned to their defense, with the last Cluster stationed on Lum.  Gamma Galaxy has assigned a single Cluster to Strana Mechty (the 7th Raven Regulars) with the remainder concentrated on Lum.  Both Naval Stars are based out of Lum, but the Valkyrie Naval Scout Star makes regular patrols of the other Raven worlds.

In the Isles, the Ravens share the world of Paran with Clan Ghost Bear.  Here, the Ravens have constructed a massive shipyard complex in orbit around one of the systems Gas Giants.  Although not yet ready to start construction of WarShips (but observers believe that it will be so capable in as little as five years time), the Raven’s Nest Yards are quite capable of handling any WarShip or JumpShip repairs.  One of the four of the Newgrange-class YardShips operated by the Ebon Keshik on behalf of all of the Clans are stationed here as well, to provide mobile assistance to any Clan vessel in distress.  (Two more of the mobile Yards are stationed along the DeChavillier Corridor, with the last remaining in the Homeworlds.  They are considered Clan-wide assets and are not the property of any individual Clan.)

With the combined forces of the Bears and Ravens, Paran may well be the single most well-defended of the Clan conquests in the Isles.  Already looking ahead, the Ravens have begun construction on a limited ground-based SDS system for when the majority of their forces will be called off-world for the actual Invasion itself.  Although not yet operational, it is believed that the Paran Defense Grid will become so by the summer of 3051.

Math check:  You have only 22 warships listed for the Ravens when you stated that there should be 25.  Looks great otherwise.  :)
