What are the different ethnic groups living in the Rim Worlds Republic and the in the Rim Protectorate?

In Turn they tested each Clan namesake in trial against the Ice Hellion's mettle. Each chased the Ice Hellion, hunting it down. All failed to match the predator's speed and grace. Khan Cage smiled and said, "And that is how we shall be."

Well Ice I was just over at CBT and it seems that TPTB agree with my assessment that a substantial amount of Terrans settled the RWR after the Reunification War. The early composition of the Republic government seemed to be styled on ancient Greece although I'm not sure if there were any ethnic Greeks. There is also a Scottish angle (of course this is BT) on Somerset who was settled by way of natives who fled Loxley after a Lyran assault who early fled Stewart after a Marik assault. Quite a journey yes. There also seems to be quite an Eastern influence as well to the RWR. Some have suggested Mongolian but Central Asian would certainly be interesting.

The only statement I've ever seen in a canon source related to the ethnic makeup of the RWR was in Handbook House Steiner.

"Its denizens hail largely from a mix of German, Italian and Eastern European roots, whose starfaring ancestors found the wide
expanse a haven for their various cultures. Also included in the region are many former Rim Worlds planets, whose ethnicities were far more varied." (Pg. 73)

So we know that the ethnic background of the RWR was polygot even by Battletech standards. Individual worlds were probably settle by one or two ethnic groups, and had little in common with their neighbors. The exceptions would have been the core area around Apollo where the original settlers moved in en masse at the start of the Republic, and Stefan Amaris's personal colonies settled during the end of the Star League. In the latter case, those worlds would have been more uniformly settled by groups loyal to Amaris himself, and would have had a common culture.

As for the Greek angle, while I'm sure there was at least one world with such a population, I doubt they had a big influence on the overall culture. Modern and Ancient Greece are two very different civilizations afterall. Most Greeks in the Batttech universe seemed to have settled in the FWL, CC and MoC, and that where their cultural roots are the strongest.

That Mongolian influence being limited mainly to those terrible images of Stephan and the loose written descriptions of his personage in print. TPTB kind of patterned the git after Genghis Khan, making parallels between the Genghis's destruction of the Abbasid Caliphate and that of the Terran Hegemony. (Both we're more or less at their peak, with poor rulers at the time)

And to forestall argument or objection, I'm only looking at the big picture here. The manner of their respective destruction obviously differed...

Era Report 2750 helps flesh this subject out a bit.

Major Languages of the Rim Worlds Republic.

English, Portuguese, German, Finnish, Japanese

Minor

Sami, various languages found in the Lyran Commonwealth.

Surprised Greek isn't one what with the Republic's origins and ranking structure were. I could have also seen a Turkic or Central Asian language in there too. Finnish is the biggest surprise to me. Were did that come from? Rasalhague??

Finnish makes sense- per periphery 1e p. 17 Rasalhagians fled Shiro Kurita and went to Steelton, Toland & Bensinger in the RWR.

Still wouldn't you think Greek would be a major language for them? Their early civilization based their culture on them. Helots, First Consul, Plato, Military Ranks, etc...

Not necessarily.  Per Periphery 1e p. 15 Rowe was a student of classics & history on Alexandria.  Per p.16 he modeled the RWR on on "his own warped interpretation of Plato, his favorite classical author".  Even if you go so far as to assume that Alexandria was colonized by Greeks (who spoke Greek), Rowe only had 500 followers with him when he founded Apollo.  Remember when the RWR was originally founded it was created more through Diplomacy then force- so it is unlikely that the Rowe's would have tried to force Greek as the national language.

True.

Well Rasalhague is Swedish, but most of the area around Rasalhague was colonized by Scandinavians of various descent. So having Finnish as a major language isn't much of a stretch. Perhaps having the Finns flee Shiro helps create the culture vacuum filled by the Swedes, and that's why today the Rasalhague District is overwhelmingly Swedish in nature.

But Rasalhagians are Swedish and not Finnish (two quite different languages).

Rasalhague (both the region and the planet) was settled by a variety of Northern European people. The old SBs mention Swedes, but also Norwegians, Danes, Finns, and Germans. I seem to remember a reference to "Balts" (Lithuanians, Latvians, and Estonians (another Finnic people)) living there as well, but I can't find the exact passage right now.

Overall it seems the Republic was heavily settled by a mix of Lyran, Draconian, and later Terran Hegmonian peoples. The exact proportions seemed to vary from province to province, with Apollo having more Terrans (and specifically Portuguese) and Timbuktu having more Lyrans. Finnmark was the most "Finnish" (obviously) while having strong Germanic influences. Erdvynn seemed to have a strong German presence as well.

We know there were a lot of other groups as well. Luanda seemed to have a strong Muslim East African population. Mohammed Selim came from Delagoa, a world named after a bay in modern Mozambique (a former Portuguese colony). It's possible a lot of the Portuguese-speakers in the Republic came from Lusophone nations, not Portugal proper.
