Re: Third Marik Civil War
« Reply #15 on: April 23, 2021, 11:09:08 PM »

I really like the idea of borrowing some concepts from the English Civil War to map out the proposed Third Marik Civil War.  Sorry so late to the party, but I do know me some English Civil War, even if I'm not a huge Marik stanboy. :)

The three factions presented here don't neatly map onto the English Civil War, but there might be some parallels.  The "True Mariks" seem like the closest thing to a Royalist faction -- the "provinces" that are being offered greater autonomy for support seem to refer to the large duchies and principalities, led by powerful aristocracy, rather than the independent world/provinces that are a closer fit to the 40-shilling freeholders that make up the bulk of the English House of Commons back in the day.  The utter lack of outside support is...a bit odd, given that you'd expect that major trading partners would probably prefer that Sun-Tzu Liao NOT have control over two Houses and the manufacturing power of the FWL.  An obvious parallel here is the War of Spanish Succession, and how all of Europe more or less unified to prevent Louis 14 from gaining (at least direct) control of the Spanish throne.  At the very least, I would expect a little covert aid from the FedCom, with the Fox and trying to put his meaty thumb on the scale here, much like the French were trying to help out covertly in the ECW.  That said, I love that Paul and Corinne, who play starring roles in the Jihad, are showing up very, very early here in the same anti-Thomas (now anti-Isis) role.  And this suggests that Kristen's Krushers are due for an appearance with some divided loyalties -- support her baby cousin Corinne, or support her baby niece Isis?

Also, I recall that one significant plot point in the Jihad is that Corinne is vaguely anti-Resolution 288, in support of her cousin Alys who is VOCALLY anti-288, to the point that the FWL kicks her out after the Jihad and "gifts" her to the Republic of the Sphere.  Granted, Alys is all of 11 years old in 3052, but still....  Intrigue!

-----

The Liao-Mariks are probably my favorite of the three factions in concept, but I've two concerns about the specific details.  First, I don't know that this is the ideal name for the faction -- highlighting how your bitter Spinward rival is undertaking a soft takeover of the FWL seems like a poor PR strategy, especially after everyone in the Inner Sphere has had a long time to be well and truly sick of Max and Romano and their insane hijinks.  How about the "Concord", because the engagement between Isis and Sun-Tzu was an attempt to revive the Concord of Kapetyn?  What's more, the religious concept of a Concord is synonymous with a Convenant, which with their overt WOB support and the obvious influence of the Capellans, is what I think is the obvious parallel in the English Civil War -- this is the Covenanter faction, only more powerful than in actual history, with loftier goals.  I am really rooting for Isis, because she's in the canon fiction she is forced into the "hapless damsel" role over and over again (= poor damn writing by nearly 100% testosterone-addled authors), and a massive litany of PTSD-inducing trauma is forced on her, over and over again.  And her "happy ending" in the canon is getting hitched to Victor Steiner Davion as the BACKUP princess, after the Asian princess gets fridged.  Ugh.  So much ugh.

I do like the notion that the Capellans are not overtly helping, but rather hiring lots of mercenaries through cut-outs to assist Isis, and that she doesn't have a lot of native support in the FWL.  Again, matches a lot of the Covenanter background.  And it would be entirely in Sun-Tzu's nature to play the other factions against each other - "help" the Parliamentarians (Periphery Mariks) against the Royalists (True Mariks) to try to weaken both, then give the True Marik leader Corinne refuge after she is in danger of being captured by the Parliamentarians (like with Charlies 1 -- I'm revising your proposed timeline a little here, but it's flexible), and then finally trying to place the 'true heir' (in this case Isis) on the throne after Corinne is displaced or made un-alive.

If you're incorporating "The Master" (Thomas Marik the Wobbly fanatic) in the Civil War, then he has an obvious reason to support his actual living child, and turn her into a puppet to support his WOB goals.

That said, the second (and bigger) issue I have with the fluff is -- "Cult of Isis terrorists"?  Seems a bit tone-deaf, not to mention I don't see the in-universe logic (Isis is very clearly a complete nothingburger and only 18 years old in 3052, with no Thuggee Cult equivalent like Kali Liao), particularly if she's being backed by the Wobblies, who would be perfectly happy to do this sort of nonsense themselves, without needing to create a front group like the "Cult of Isis".

What about bringing Kali into the mix as a wild-card instead?  She's newly inherited control of the Thuggee Cult and Sun Tzu is trying to deflect any potential damage away from the Confederation by pointing his baby sister and her fanatic assassins at Andurien or Oriente on the border regions -- who also are conveniently supporting opposition factions in the Civil War.

----------

The Duchy of Andurien, though clearly not a major player in this Civil War, can play the Irish Confederacy in this mix-up (also not a major player in the ECW).  They'd be reluctant allies of the "True Mariks" (Royalists) -- offering their aid in exchange for greater regional autonomy and regaining direct control over the Defenders of Andurien (now FW Legionnaires).  You could even call the reformed Andurien military units the Andurien Rangers (as per the Jihad).  They would be utterly opposed to the "Concord" (Convenaters, your Liao-Mariks), who are -- as you've explained -- in a soft alliance with the Magistracy of Canopus to split up pieces of the Duchy to "return" to the Canopians in exchange for their aid.  They'd also be set up to oppose to the Periphery Mariks, who would be the obvious Parliamentarians in this scenario, set on reunifying the FWL and stripping power away from the powerful larger provincial leaders (like the Humphreys).

----------

The Periphery Mariks are an interesting faction.  Might I suggest an even bolder plot-twist as to your protagonist Jeffrey Byrd Marik's background?  What if he wasn't Martin's son, but Anton's?  And that a paranoid Janos had whisked him away and claimed him as his own grandson as a safeguard against one of his own children 'betraying' him like his beloved younger brother had?  Or as some twisted form of repentance for having caused his beloved brother's death?  Etc.  Like Ice Hellion said in the post previous: Anton's Ghost!

At any rate, as the successful periphery merchant, he can clearly play the Oliver Cromwell character in this drama, with broad appeal to the dozens of independent world/provinces that are eager to weaken the larger duchies and provinces, and curtail the power of the Captain-General by ending Resolution 288.  Even better if his wife's name is Elizabeth Byrd (or even Bourchier if you're being super obvious), and she's the reason that Jeffrey had the connections and networks to become a successful periphery merchant.  And if he's already a member of the FWL Parliament, and has been for quite a few years at this point -- since 3028 or 3030 or so at least (this would match Cromwell's long career in the Commons, and his years of connections that put him in position to become Lord Protector) -- and that this is where he has his political power-base and his reputation as a radical.  That sets the stage for his role as the head of the Parliamentarian faction -- and gives a clear set of reasons why the Andurien Humphreys would be in opposition to him (as the Irish Confeds were to the Parliamentarians in the ECW) -- they were already political opponents for years, even decades, in the FWL Parliament.

I think without some established method (like above) for having built his own power-base, or without some major (living) power broker supporting him, it doesn't make sense for Jeffrey Byrd Marik to just hop out of the bushes and argue for his candidacy.  After all, Janos had a LOT of kids and grandkids, and all of them would have just as strong a claim as Jeffrey, because the Captain-Generalcy might be dynastic, but very clearly isn't a system of primogeniture.

With the backing of most of the independent world/provinces, and maybe a few of the smaller multi-world provinces, Jeffrey would have a pretty heavy-hitting power base that should seriously concern the other claimants.  He also wouldn't need much outside support (not that he'd be likely if, like Cromwell, he's promising to take power away from the major provinces, unify the breakaway regions of the state, and push through his radical political agenda).

All that's missing is some radical religious belief that is driving Jeffrey to do all this, comparable to the Puritan faith of Cromwell.  What about something like a revived One Star faith?  I don't know if this is a good match given that it's a Lyran cult, but something similar in the FWL (like I said, I'm not a FWL stanboy so I'm not sure what is comparable).  What about a splinter Exituri sect (again, fast-forwarding Jihad plotlines and "Interstellar Players" plots by several decades)?  This would give the Wobblies two potential claimants to the FWL throne!

Great post fabulousorcboy!

I am currently mulling over my next move here but thanks to you and Doc Agren we are definitely moving forward.

Doc got me back on track with the Jardine thoughts and let me move on from there. The 'Real' Thomas Marik is killed on Mars in this alternate history in a power dispute as the Word of Blake comes into being changing things to a great degree not only for the Blakist but for the Free Worlds League as well.

I'll detail this more later but I'd love to get input on this degree from you and others. Certainly your thoughts on Jeffrey Byrd are very relevant although I considered the Anton angle for his character and ultimately dismissed it. Not to say we can't have a character like that cause I've cataloged plenty of Marik candidates as part of this project.

NP, happy to help.  This past year has been weird and left me with plenty of time  :P

Overall, as weird and unrealistic as the Battletech novels are, I remember getting into the fluff originally because of the incredibly detailed sourcebooks, clearly a massive labor of love by a small group of very dedicated FASA creators.  Those sourcebooks made a real effort to create a credible history and sociopolitical context for the Succession Wars and Battletech universe.

Part of what I dislike about the Dark Age is how very trite and shallow the motivations and actions of all the characters are by comparison.  I don't know if they'll be able to make the IlKhan setting/conclusion coherent, but I don't have high hopes, even if I do like the stompy robots.

So long story short, I'm happy to try and help make this Civil War concept "realistic", which means all the factions need a realistic political power base, because they all have roughy equivalent claims to the Captain-Generalcy.  Isis is clearly backed by Liao and WOB, Corinne and Paul are cutting deals with the powerful aristocracy (the larger provinces), and that means that Jeffrey has to pull his support from....where?  There's not a lot of workable options, particularly if you don't want the Fox involved, so that's why I suggested making him a long-time parliamentarian as well as a wealthy merchant; that ends up giving him one of the strongest bases of domestic support, and explains his anti-288 position -- plus makes him easily fit the Oliver Cromwell role.  And copying an event like the ECW, at least in the broad strokes, is a straight-forward way to create a richly detailed Marik Civil War without having to do a lot of heavy lifting on your own.

Amen brother!

I don't think people appreciate how much I enjoy feedback like this. Even if I don't agree with your ideas I get alot out of them. Comments drive the story onwards and this is a bunch of good stuff right here. I'm hoping to comment in more detail tonight or tomorrow.

You don't think this is too much do you? Jeffrey Byrd could probably move back to the League after Janos' death. He probably would have enjoyed Marik citizenship his whole life even living outside the League. He was born there in my vision but do you think an MP fits here? Is it stuffing too much into his character?

If so I could have him marry Helen Montcalm of Kendall which would make a good deal more sense. Being a Parliamentarian gets him back to Atreus and he would be pro-business obviously.

Hmm.....

There's no reason Jeffrey has to be an MP, I just suggested it because of the English Civil War parallel, and there was no obvious Parliamentarian faction.  It's also the most logical power base for what you've described:

* bastard or unrecognized child of Janos Marik's oldest (and deceased) son.  Since the dynasty is not based on primogeniture, that doesn't really matter, and even if primogeniture was the rule, actual human history suggests that he still needs a power base backing his claim to the Captain-Generalcy.

* got wealthy operating in the Periphery.  That's kind of generic, but suggests that he has ties to a lot of the independent world/provinces of the FWL, because most of them are on the periphery.  Maybe even a way to tie in the Marian Hegemony here.  The core worlds are dominated by large provinces with established aristocracy, who are already being courted by the Paul/Corinne faction.  This could be a story element suggesting that he's being bankrolled by other interests, though.

* It takes a long time to develop a political power base.  Cromwell was first elected in 1628 (due to his wife's money and connections, plus his own business patrons), and by 1641 was enough of an established player to make his own moves.  That's 13 years, most of it non-continuous because of how Parliamentary elections worked in the 1600s, but we can assume that he was still networking outside of Parliament as well as within it.  Benjamin Disraeli was first elected in 1837, and by 1847 was a serious player -- he's considered a political genius and it took him 10 years to build up sufficient clout to take a leadership role (he didn't get the chance to be PM until 30 years in, but probably could have made a play if he had wanted).

So if Jeffrey is going to head a small provinces/Parliament faction, he needs at least a decade to build up the base of support to make his play in 3053.  Moving back to the FWL after Janos is killed in 3035 could work just fine -- maybe he first gets elected around 3040?

* There needs to be some reason why Jeffrey's power base supports his anti-288 position.  The major provinces and noble families are already with Paul/Corinne, with the exception of Andurien, which isn't really a reasonable power base on its own (that's why I suggested making them a fourth quasi-faction, comparable to the Irish Confederacy in the ECW).  If it's not the independent worlds, then maybe it's a corporatist base -- perhaps it's the big independent companies like Irian, Brigadier, and Kali Yama, that's supporting his play -- that would help his faction get all the nice stompy robots when the war gets real, and let him create a "New Model Army" :) a la Cromwell.  In fact, having a couple of big weapons companies, plus a lot of PMs and independent worlds, would give Jeffrey a reasonable shot at the big chair.

* Do you have an idea for an endgame here?  I'm just speculating, but Jeffrey managing to win and kill 288, then die or step down shortly thereafter, with Isis taking over as constitutional monarch in the Captain Generalcy, would give Sun Tzu a technical victory while satisfying the Fox and Dragon (and Space AT&T) that he doesn't have totalitarian control over two realms, because FWL Parliament would be holding the power, not his wife Isis.

I get that it's easier for the Battletech folks to write fiction with dynastic totalitarian states, but several centuries of Succession Wars should have made it really obvious to everyone what the major weaknesses of authoritarian rule are.  Representative democracy might have some issues, but given the other options, I would be very happy to see the FWL embrace it again.  On a tangent, it's depressing in a grimdark way that the major Battletech experiment in representative democracy -- the Republic of the Sphere -- is intentionally designed to fail spectacularly for storytelling purposes, just so a brutal, caste-based military oligarchy can achieve victory.  Yay, IlClan.    :-\

It does make a certain amount of sense linking him to Kendall and the Montcalm family who rules it, original I had planned for something different but this could work fine. I have to research Kendall's voting habits but they seem to be pretty independent. Ten years starting around 3040 or so seems to be a good number and I had planned on linking up with Bowang (Li Weaver - Speaker of the Parliament) during the Civil War so it all seems to work.

As to why he is anti-288 it could be a pre-Marik position he held to simply cause the Succession Wars are at an end. I'll have to think about this more... Captain-General Thomas Marik consolidation of power following Andurien has to be worrying to some but you can't be to outspoken here either. Independents and Corporate types backing his rise would be like. In canon he either never realized who he was or perhaps the Blakist did and eliminated him early in their journey to Gibson. There is a thought.. he maybe anti-Blakist...but either way another backer of his was going to be ComStar. Foreigners like the FedCom would likely back him hoping to weaken the central government too, all this would be covert but recognizable to the True Mariks.

I do have an endgame envisioned but want to surprise you somewhat... more on Paul/Corrine and the Isis/Sun Tzu coming up too.

What about using the two fist bullet points? And granting him support from the independent worlds/provinces, his own wealth (if any) and some will from the bigger Periphery neighbours to keep the FWL busy on something else (they could even have different real goals on this matter).

Just a bit. I would make him a bit older. 8-10 years or so. Have the other events happen at the same time (3033/3042)

Agree.  Plus, if it's 8-10 years earlier, he could easily be one of Anton's kids  8)

...or, at least rumors about the possibility would be credible.  Cue the story about LBJ spreading rumors about his opponent sleeping with pigs.

I know such an acumen for war and business he is either a Marik or Diamond Shark. I think it works better than Alexander Davion and that is sort of the goal here. Ward's unknown son provides an heir of legitimacy where Anton's kid I am not in love with. He'd likely be a bastard exiled as part of a punishment and concerns would not have to be made up there. You already have a legitimate contender with Liao ties being rejected and Anton was well known for his Liao ties. The fun fact about the True Mariks is that they have the weakest claim to the title.

His strong lineage via Ward and Janos, and Paul and Corinne's relatively weak claim, are precisely why I anticipate Paul Marik helpfully spreading the rumor that Jeffrey is Anton's son :)  Any cooperation between the Periphery Mariks and the Concord Mariks ("Liao Mariks" is so unworkable as to be a self-own of a name) would just be more "proof" of this, so far as the True Mariks are concerned.

I anticipate Paul helpfully reminding everyone about Isis's illegitimacy as well (the question of her parentage is pretty well established in canon via various DNA tests).

On a related note, I can see the Paul/Corinne faction calling themselves the "True Mariks", but not anyone else, since it's clearly a biased name.  Maybe the "noble Mariks"?  Similarly, Jeffrey's faction is unlikely to refer to themselves as that "Periphery Mariks", given that the concept of the Periphery is so negative in the Inner Sphere.  Maybe the "Parliamentary Mariks"?  I've already suggested "Concord Mariks" for Isis/Sun-Tzu.  So Noble/Parliament/Concord might be the more neutral descriptors used by ComStar News and INN and such.

OOOhhhhhh, I love this. Even though Anton died in 3015 this is a perfect way to try to ruin this mysterious newcomer whose origins are already in doubt. This is definitely going to be done. Fantastic idea!

The True Marik faction led by Minister-General Paul Marik who acts as Regent for his daughter whom a majority of the Free Worlds see as their legitimate Captain-General. However, Corrine Marik's capture on Sadurni by the Liao-Mariks has apparently undermined their ability to retaliate directly at that rival to the throne. Granting Provinces more freedom to pursue their own destiny by returning their military forces from League service has been the most effective counter to Isis' followers. The foreign invasion by the Periphery Mariks has drawn the full fury of their remaining troops Anti-Spinward. While viewed as weak and indecisive by some critics this measured approach could eventually succeed but has little outside support. ComStar in particular has been called out by supporters of this faction who despise foreign involvement which has always destabilized the nation.

While Paul clearly does not want the throne it is Corrine's status prior to Thomas' death which gives this patriotic cause its gravitas. Clearly Isis is the rightful successor but her ties to Sun Tzu make her unacceptable to any True Marik, thus the turn to Corrine and Paul. Very nationalistic to the point of isolationist this faction sees itself as the only just one in the League with other 'foreigners' attempting an outside takeover.

The Concordians (like that name for the Liao-Mariks) strike at Sadurni manages to take Corrine out of the picture complicating matters. Paul reluctantly takes pseudo-regency on Atreus with the title Minister-General (since he is the Minister of Intelligence) but really puts Parliament in a bind. Is what he is doing legal? Isn't he compromised by Corrine's status? And what of Jeffrey's claim to the throne?

Paul makes the decision to grant the Provinces greater autonomy effectively attempting to wash his hands of any reprisals by Isis and her Capellan allies against Corrine. The FWLM redeploys to its native regions where possible as the True Mariks hope to eventually resume national control. This also pits them against the Jeffrey Marik and other rebellious provinces.

Faced with the collapse of order as rival Mariks vied for control small Provinces started to form alliances which consolidated their assets. While some were based on protection (real or imagined) others simply wished to maintain commerce but most simply wished to maintain some type of normalcy with their neighbors. Whether providing simple necessities or establishing order amid the chaos of the Marik Civil War these associations continued to evolve. Proximity often dictated which these nascent associations but some were bought together by shared culture and heritage. Likewise, historic ties enabled larger Provinces to grow and reconstitute much of their old boundaries. These binding legal agreements effectively began to reverse the Camlann decision forever changing the structure of the Free Worlds League.
