Overview
The SM-1 Tank Destroyer was created to give the Nova Cats a mobile ground cavalry unit capable of supporting regular Mech and Battle Armour units. The result was a fusion powered hot-rod of a Hovertank capable of levelling any BattleMech in service in a few solid rounds of combat. The resulting SM-series vehicles led to the Nova Cats choosing to produce a Snow Tiger OmniVehicle based on the craft.
Capabilities
All variants of the SM Hovertank and the Snow Tiger are capable of eighty-six kilometres per hour cruising speed and nearly one hundred-and-thirty kilometres per hour. The primary SM-1 tank has an Ultra-class assault autocannon with six tons of ammo fixed forward. The idea of the craft is to charge forward hitting a Mech with several rounds of assault Ultra autocannon, then spinning around behind a target hitting its rear armour. Supporting this is four Light Machine Guns in a turret.
The SM-2, 3, 4, 5 variants which make up the alpha, beta, constellation and delta configurations of the Snow Tiger are a variation of the theme. The SM-2 is the sniper craft of the series with a gauss rifle with eight micro pulse lasers in a turret. The SM-3 is the anti-aircraft model of the series with a massive HAG-30 fixed forward on a tilting mount five tons of ammo allow the SM-3 to keep up the pressure for longer periods of time. The SM-4 is the anti-infantry variant of the Hovertank with two plasma cannons fixed forward and six anti-personnel gauss rifles allowing the craft to burn fortifications and cut down conventional infantry or battle armour asset. Finally the SM-5 is the support configuration for the series, and the Snow Tiger, with two massive twelve tube Advanced Tactical Missile Launchers fixed forward supplied by five tons of ammo, normally this is a mix of HE, Standard and ER rounds however it allows crews to choose what they carry for their environment. An SM-5 in a city with HE rounds is an absolute terror to enemy Mechs or vehicles as individual missiles can destroy various systems in a single salvo.
When the Snow Tiger was debuted an Echo variant of the Hovertank was created this has been dubbed the ‘Super-Support’ variant by the Nova Cats as it features an Arrow IV Artillery Missile Support Launcher fixed forward supported by three tons of armour. On the craft is a forward fixed anti-missile system, a Light Active Probe and an ECM Suite. On the turret there are two Extended Range Medium Lasers for anti-armour operations. Considering it is an artillery version of the OmniVehicle it is a surprise that the Snow Tiger Echo is a popular configuration amongst the Nova Cat warriors who use it. With advanced electronics, an anti-missile system and turret mounted Extended-Range Medium Lasers as well as an Arrow IV artillery piece there is little wonder.
Unlike many vehicles the Snow Tiger does not have an LRM support configuration. This is something many Nova Cat units have asked for as it would bring a highly mobile support vehicle to the table. Engineers have looked at it however warriors testing LRM support variants complain the vehicle is not effective as it is too low to the ground to provide effective support and its speed limits its effectiveness. So far the Nova Cats have not produced a fully fledged LRM support variant.
Deployment
Clan Nova Cat initially deployed all the variants of the SM-Series Hovertank and the Snow Tiger in all cases the tanks were first added to Tau Galaxy which was based on New Haiti of the Nova Cat’s Den where most of the Hovertanks were produced. Once the Snow Tiger entered full production the older SM Hovertanks were mothballed from service or sold to the Nova Cat’s allies. Clan Sea Fox has been a large buyer of the tank as has Clan Snow Raven of the SM-3 for their bases in the Outworlds Alliance. The surplus SM-type craft have been sold to the Federated Suns, the Filtvelt Coalition and the Fronc Reaches though neither periphery realm has bought many of the craft as they lack support facilities for Clan technology.
So far the Nova Cats have kept a monopoly on the Snow Tiger OmniVehicle.
