Overview
With the Raven fleet starting to show its age, a series of proposals for a new series of ships were requested
from the office of the Khan to move the Ravens towards a newer fleet paradigm. The first concept to be
accepted was a corvette escort design, though rival design teams caused delays in finalizing the design. The
end result is that the Unkindness-class corvette was beaten to activation by the Constellation-class frigate
by nearly fifteen years.
Capabilities
The Unkindness-class is built to work for two roles in the Raven fleet, the first is as a picket ship, acting
as a first responder to enemy incursion. The second is as an escort, where a pair of them are hoped to be
deployed to defend a larger ship against smaller threats, allowing it to focus on heavier targets. The design
of the ship allows for it to function well in both roles.
As a picket ship, the 10,000 ton cargo bay allows it and its attached pair of DropShips to function
independently for many months, and possibly years, at a time. The pair of small grav-decks will allow the ship
to lie in doggo while maintaining the health and morale of the crew and those of the attending DropShips. The
pair DropShips can function as extended system surveillance units, allowing the Unkindness to survey more of a
system at a time, or can be used in a more offensive role by attaching assault ships or pocket warships.
The weapon loadout of the ship emphasizes the other perceived role of the class, that of an escort. It has a
quite powerful NAC bay on the nose, but surrounding the rest of the ship layers of capital, subcapital, and
standard sized lasers. These lasers allow the ship to prioritize targets and fire increasingly accurate
weapons as opposing fighters and dropships near its charge.
Deployment
As these warships can be completed in the same slips as the similarly sized Comitatus-class jumpships, once the
supply lines mature, they will be very easy to produce in numbers. The Ravens plan for the first pair of ships
to deploy with the Raven Watch and their recently acquired 1st Rangers Cluster in early 3108, if they work as
well as expected, full scale production could begin as early as 3110, turning out at least two vessels a year.
If this happens, the Ravens may attempt to use the class in trade to other clans.
