Nike (Omni) Medium Battle Tank
Overview:
Designed after the debut of the Epona Pursuit Tank, the Nike Medium Battle Tank
is a favorite of the Warriors within Clan Hell's Horses Toumen. Relatively
swift for a 50-ton tracked vehicle, the Nike is fairly well protected for a
Clan combat vehicle and utilizes Omni-technology to a higher degree than the
older Epona. With fourteeen and one-half tons of pod space available, the Nike
is certainly able to carry a substantial amount of firepower (just one and one
half tons less than the Nova OmniMech).
By the of the Clan Invasion in 3049, the design had spread from the Horses to
nearly every surviving Clan of Kerensky. Although more expensive than the
standard Clan combat vehicles, the ease of repair and ability to customize the
design for specific assignments quickly won over many Warriors. Today, the
Nike can be found in the garrison and second-line forces of virtually every
Clan.
Capabilities:
Massing 50-tons, the Nike was designed to fit within the standard light vehicle
bay used aboard Clan DropShips. This tracked vehicle used a 250-rate standard
fusion engine that provides for a cruise speed of 54 kilometers per hour and a
flank speed of 86.4 kph. A one-and-one-half ton turret was fitted to the
design, allowing for all of the Nike's weapons and equipment to be installed
within the spacious volume.
Crew consists of four personnel: a driver and a technician who are seated in
the lower main hull, and a gunner and a commander whose stations are within the
turret. Typically, only the commander and gunner are Warriors; the driver and
technician normally come from the Technician class. Each crewman has their own
hatch (two on the forward hull, two on the turret). There is little, if any,
spare room within the hull of a Nike, but each crewman has a survival backpack
stowed in compartments within the hull (the Warriors also have their personal
weapons) and a twenty-liter tank of fresh water comes standard. In addition, a
bustle rack on the rear turret allows for the storage of additional equipment,
rations, ortools.
Armor protection is decent with seven and one-half tons of ferro-fibrous armor
plating distributed fairly evenly across the hull. The front, sides, and
turret can resist two hits from a Gauss Rifle or Clan ER PPC without suffering
internal penetration; the weaker rear armor can withstand a single Class 20
autocannon burst and still have armor remaining in place. Although some
critics still fear that the armor protection is too light, Clan Warriors point
out the rather sizeable amount of pod-space available for weapon systems.
With 14.5 tons available in pod-space, the Nike can pack a considerable punch
for a 50-ton tank.
The Nike Prime carries three weapon systems: all located in the turret. A
Large Pulse Laser is the main gun, providing good range and hitting power, as
well as superb accuracy. A ten-tube LRM launcher with Artemis IV fire-control
is emplaced to the right of the laser, while a four-tube box launcher for
Streak SRMs is mounted on the left side of the turret. Twenty-four LRM and
twenty-five SRM salvoes are carried.
Configuration A is armed with an ER PPC. Due to the weight of the heat sinks
required, only a standard LRM-5 launcher and a Vehicle Flamer with 20 bursts of
fuel are carried as auxiliary weapons. Like the Prime (indeed, most versions
of the Nike), all weapons are carried in the turret for maximum field of fire.
The Nike B has two weapons: an ER Large Laser and a fifteen-tube LRM launcher
with Artemis IV fire-control and 24 missile salvoes. This configuration also
carries an ECM Suite for electronic warfare.
Configuration C is designed for close-combat operations. Twin ER Medium Lasers
are mounted, along with the fifteen-tube LRM launcher with Artemis IV of the B
(24 salvoes). However, a six-tube box launcher for Streak SRMs is mounted on
the left side of the turret (15 salvoes) and two-machine guns are carried; one
each on the turret and front. A single half-ton of MG ammo provides 100 bursts
of fire shared by the two guns.
Configuration D features two Medium Pulse Lasers, supporting a twenty-tube LRM
launcher with Artemis IV (18 salvoes). An Anti-Missile System in the turret
with 24 bursts provides additional protection.
The Nike E is a dedicated anti-aircraft vehicle. The main guns are twin LB-2X
autocannons (with 45 bursts of cluster ammunition only), supported by two ER
Medium Lasers and an Anti-Missile System with 24 bursts.
Configuration F carries an Ultra AC-10 in the turret (20 bursts), with a
co-axial ER Medium Laser. Secondary weapons consist of a Flamer and two MGs
fed by a half-ton of ammunition (100 bursts). One MG is fitted to the turret,
the second to the front.
The Nike G carries a single turret mounted Gauss Rifle with sixteen shots. The
only secondary weapon is a single Flamer for anti-personnel work.
Configuration H was designed for short-range combat, the Nike H carries two ER
Medium Lasers and three Streak SRM-6 launchers in the turret. Two tons of SRM
ammo provide a total of 30 missile salvoes. An Anti-Missile System with 24
bursts gives some additional defensive fire.
The Nike I is much like the Prime, with a Large Pulse Laser as the main gun
supported by an LRM-10 with Artemis IV fire-control and twenty-four missile
salvoes. However, instead of a short-range missile system, this configuration
carries an Active Probe, an ECM Suite, and a TAG system; all are turret mounted.
Configuration J is fitted with an LB-20X autocannon with an ER Small Laser in a
co-axial mount. Two tons of ammunition provides for just ten bursts, normally
divided with five each of cluster and slug.
Finally, Configuration K appeared in 3054. This fearsome opponent carries just
four Medium Pulse Lasers and a Light TAG system.
The Nike L was introduced in 3068. It carries a HAG-20 with 18 bursts as the
primary weapon, supported by an ER Medium Laser and a Flamer.
Configuration M debuted in 3069. This model carries an ER Large Laser as the
main gun, along with an ATM-6 launcher (with 30 salvoes of missiles carried).
For anti-personnel work, two AP Gauss Rifles sharing a ton of ammunition (40
bursts) are mounted: one each on the turret and front.
Deployment:
Clan Hell's Horses remains the single largest users of Nikes to this day,
however the design has spread to the other Clans of Kerensky and can be found
throughout the Clan Occupation Zone and the Homeworlds.
