Prospector Mining Ship
« on: September 10, 2018, 09:34:59 AM »

The Prospector class mining ships began being refitted by the Ghost Bears in 2884 during the height of the Golden Age. As new technologies began becoming more available to the Clans and the OmniMech first made its appearance 30 years earlier. The Ghost Bears realized that the necessary resources to enact all of their policies wasn't readily available. Determining to exploit the large asteroid belts available to them the Bears designed the Prospector off the Behemoth class Dropship frame. Easily the largest class dropship available and with its limited role as it could only land on the lower gravity moons and planets it filled the void needed for the project. It wasn't until 2911 that the newly produced Prospectors began being produced at the Ghost Bears Shipyards after exhausting their supply of Behemoths that could be refitted.

The internal layout of a Prospector is nearly identical to the Behemoth such that the bridge deck is self-sufficient, with independent life support and power supply, and can easily be sealed off. Supporting two stars of Elementals increases its security features ensuring that seizing control of a Prospector is nearly impossible. The Prospector is noted for comfortable individual rooms for its crew of 310, including first class quarters for its officers and gunners. A large hydroponic garden, a medical facility, an exercise room, a lounge, and a relatively spacious mess hall.

As a cargo carrier, the Prospector's armament is pitiful at best, consisting of 12 Extended Range Large Lasers backed up by 24 Extended Range Medium Lasers. Intended as purely defensive, they are arrayed equally along the craft with the aft lacking the Extended Range Large Lasers. 40 tons of standard armor protect the craft.

The Prospector's cargo capacity of 60,949 tons is split into twenty cargo decks linked by a central spire running the length of the vessel. Four heavy duty cargo lifts allow transit of cargo within the vessel. Due to the large degree of compartmentalization, the Prospector can easily deal with both cargo that can and cannot be exposed to vacuum. Owing to its heavy reliance on shuttles for cargo transfers, the Prospector features thirty small craft bays along with 30 Industrial Mech bays.

figured you'd get the image inspiration lol.

And thanks for that snowden link. I was wondering how to work out the processing equipment.

I've got to figure out how to make a small craft that would work for this image. I figure mining lasers and some type of equipment for the arms that tear up rocks and load it.

This had been my original inspiration for an asteroid mining but didn't see it as a ship more as a facility

I probably wouldn't max out on the tonnage and go closer to a 20k ton ceiling.

We could certainly add a mining ship to our to do list if you like.

I figured its basically a mobile space station its the reason i used behemoth as base, that the clans dont really have a use for the ones they have due to its limitations. Great for the exodus useless afterwards. And to fit everything it would need for extended time in the vastness of space you need something like this. Could definitely have gone smaller but one or two in a system and your pulling in massive amounts of resources relatively fast. I figure theres no more then 30 or so built by them

Well we also have to figure out what was so revolutionary about the Ghost Bear asteroid mining operations and would that play into ship design.

I couldnt find anything. I was thinking it could be one of four things

1. A ship like this or smaller
2. Mining lasers ive seen these used in multiple scifi space games and could be ship mounted
3. Drones (i started a design like this but its for gas giant mining)
4. Unique style battlearmor

Industrial Mining Suit would a very Clan innovation. An aquatic suit for underwater ops was how the Elemental came into being.

Gonna look at the Star League books for hints

The only thing i found in their unique was the reference to Digger 500 mining robots controlled by neurohelmet with mining lasers and diamond bits. Its under death of simon cameron. So mining lasers enlarged for ships could be an avenue. Itd be cool to make up the digger 500 as well. Ill look on main forums see if anyone has done so already

Well rereading the story its a 30 ton mech and remote controlled

We may be overthinking it and it could be improved smelting or extraction techniques but thats not as fun as my original ideas

From era report 2750

Quote
ASTEROID/COMET MINING AND BOMBARDMENT
As any Belter will say, “There’s gold in them there floatin’ rocks.” They are correct, there is gold… and also uranium, titanium, iron, aluminum—more or less any element. In the initial stages of terraforming a world, DoME DropShips would burn to a system’s asteroid belt or to rogue asteroids and tow them into a nearby Lagrange point. Automated mining and refining facilities were set up to get at the raw materials needed to construct more complex machinery. The convenience of having all the necessary raw material already in orbit meant that time and energy was not wasted in dragging material up out of the planetary gravity well.

Once all the valuable material was extracted from an asteroid, there were two options to get rid of the waste byproduct. The first was to deorbit the material into the system’s primary star. The second was used on worlds that were far too cold for habitation and needed to be warmed: deorbiting the waste rock onto the planet itself. The energy transfer from a huge mass of rock re-entering the planet’s atmosphere and the impact itself would help warm the planet slightly. Hundreds
of such impacts, spread out over many years, could make a huge difference. Mars was one such world that this technique was used on; asteroids from Terra’s main belt were mined and then flung into the Martian atmosphere to accelerate the warming of the planet.

The only difference with cometary mining was the material produced. More than just balls of dusty ice used for water, comets also provided DoME with gases such as carbon dioxide, ammonia, and methane. Most of these gases would be introduced into a planetary atmosphere in order to augment its greenhouse effects, helping to warm the planet faster—as was needed on worlds like Mars. The water, of course, remained one of the most valuable commodities in the early days of humanity’s expansion. In all cases DoME would deorbit cometary bodies, providing huge amounts of water with each impact. With each comet, Mars’ atmosphere would get thicker and more humid.

This would make my ship an improvement as it brings the refinery to the asteroid instead of vice versa

Interesting find on sarna under karma novel of course its Apocryphal

Silic Mining asteroid mining vessel

"Silberstreif", an asteroid mining vessel of unknown type; might technically be a DropShip or a Small Craft. Noted to be incapable of atmospheric operations due to its non-streamlined shape. Built for multi-day trips to the asteroid rings, it has room for 10 passengers in the cockpit and features a kitchen and a storeroom for space suits. It can carry at least 80 tons (two Hermes II) in the cargo hold, but does not feature proper 'Mech bays. Mounts a civilian asteroid laser which is unsuitable for military purposes.

"Gebron's Pride", an unspecified asteroid mining vessel, possibly of the same type as the "Silberstreif"

Other things of note

http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Erinyes_(WarShip)

Jeez rereading FM Warden clans we really overthought this. It says while other clans were still using planetary mining to avail themselves and mineral resources the ghost Bears used Advanced asteroid mining techniques

This just makes me think they started asteroid mining first and have a monopoly on it

Instead of new thread I'll post this here as well.

Clan honor held that the usage of Drones in combat was a dishonorable action. Clan Ghost Bear scientists though realized the technology could be used for the often dangerous mission of harvesting valuable gasses from the untapped resources of their systems Gas Giants. Ensuring the Warriors of the Clan that these had zero combat capacity and were ultimately saving personal resources and gaining material resources for other war production efforts.

The Honeysucker Drone is an ideal solution incorporating the natural design of the Hunyadi Kraken which despite its huge size and fearsome appearance is like the giant Blue Whale of Terra eating only small sea life in massive quantities. Able to skim the gas giants and target pockets of valuable gases. It is able to deploy small recon buoys for itself or other drones in the area to target for later extraction. Enhanced sensors mounted on the drone allow the technicians safely on the mothership to scan and map large areas of the giants at a time. With over 67 tons of cargo capacity for the small craft small multiple compartments make up the storage as it goes from pocket to pocket picking up various gasses. Able to handle a crew of 5 when needed the sparse living environment would only be used in extreme situations.
