Hell's Horse Star
« on: March 20, 2012, 05:21:34 PM »

You guys are the defacto game top experts in my opinion.

What are your thoughts on this Iota Galaxy Star?

Highlander IIC
Athena Combat Vehicle x 2
Enyo Tank x 2
Roc ProtoMech Point
Centaur ProtoMech Point

Useful? Not?

Don't know if you're looking for non-Hexare input, but I'll put this up. From my own personal experiences, I've found mixed Stars with few Mechs to work best at the Binary level. If you're going with a mixed single Star, I've found a lot of success with 3 Mechs, 2 tanks, and a single point of Protos (I'd recommend the Rocs). Once you dip below 3 Mechs, you really start to risk losing too much of your force to vehicle crits, artillery, etc. You need solid stand up units to absorb punishment to let those non-Mech units shine. That means Mechs. My general rule of thumb with Horses (or other mixed Clan forces, like the Nova Kitties) is 3 Mechs for a single star. If you're going Binary, then you take the riskier 1 or 2 Mechs and just have a lot more sacrificial tanks.

I'm looking for any and all input. Thanks Dread!

(I've just posted a similar question in this area before.)

The single zombie assault 'Mech seems like a liability.  Any enemy with any tactical ability is going to ignore it to crit-kill your medium tanks and then work over the ProtoMechs to quickly cut down on the amount of firepower you are fielding.

What do you expect from this unit?
I would bring another 'Mech into the game.

The problem might be the same as the one we are discussing for your Age of Chaos: what is the smallest efficient combined-arms unit?

Suggestions or corrections?

These were leftovers in the bin. I have more, but I'd like to hear everyone's thoughts.

Thanks!

It's a good question Ice. I'm not sure what the smallest efficient combined-arms unit is in this particular case. That's why I'm askin.  ;D

Personally, I'd go with newer Horses stuff. Particularly the upgrades of various Clan vees and second-line Mechs found in 3060U. I'd look to a Balius, a Cygnus, and swap something else out for the Highlander IIC. Then again, I never liked the Highlander IIC. Maybe one of the non-Omni Black Hawks. I'd keep that for the three Mechs. Then maybe an Athena (HAG) and one of the other HAG upgrades. Then I'd go with a point of mixed Rocs.

As for the second question, I've always found that a company for the IS and a Binary for the Clans was the most effective way to have a small combined arms force. It also helps if you do what I do in my campaigns, and consider a platoon of infantry equal to 1 Mech, instead of 1 platoon equal to a full lance.

The issue is that the single 'Mech doesn't bring much to the fight on it's own.  My suggestion is to either replace it with a faster Heavy/Medium design that can take advantage of a 'Mechs inherent maneuverability and terrain-crossing advantages, or either add more 'Mechs, or field no 'Mechs at all, swapping it out for a point of Mars.  The pair of Mars are going to deliver a hell of a lot more firepower than your Highlander IIC, and the damage will get passed around more.

Thanks fellas. Anyone else?

What are your thoughts on the Centaurs? I also have a couple of points of Harpies. Not sure what to do with them. (They were a gift.)

Harpies are just bigger/faster Elementals.
Centaurs are one of the most flexible  ProtoMechs but it doesn't have the ammo to last long.

Thoughts on combining a Highlander IIC, Mad Cat II, Cygnus and a Point of Rocs? Keep the Athenas, or dump them? Replace the Cygnus with something else? For some reason, I really like the Highlander & Mad Cat.

As for expanding into the Binary Range. I wanted to incorporate the Centaurs, but what else? Add the Enyos or Rhinos? Maybe a Bowman and something to take advantage of the artillery? This is an Iota Galaxy Binary, so definitely Second-line.

The single star you mentioned sounds great, keeping the Athenas. I'm a fan of the Cygnus (depending on variant), but not everybody agrees.

Enyos are awesome. I haven't used a Bowman, as I tend not to care for the artillery Mechs. You certainly couldn't go wrong with some Centaurs, some Enyos, a Mars or two. Some of the newer Thunder Stallions might be worth considering as well.

I was thinking something like this for a mixed Binary/Trinary. Thoughts? Some of this has to do with availability of the minis and ease of procurement, but also taking advantage of minis I already have in the bits box.

Highlander IIC
Mad Cat II
Hellstar
Roc Point
Athena Point

Guillotine IIC
Bowman 2
Vulture or Thresher
Centaur Point
Enyo Point

Elemental Star

I'm also thinking about grabbing some Orcs, or some standard Hell's Horse infantry just to lend everything a little more Horse flavor.

I'd maybe drop either the Hellstar (because I hate the cynicism in that design mentality) or the Guillotine for another point of vehicles. Then again, I prefer vees in BT. :)

The newer Ares or a Mars point is a real strong contender, if you want more staying power. If you're willing to go for one front line unit, I'd even splurge for some Eponas. That unit could use some mobility. If not, then take a closer look at the Hephaesteus Jump Tank (if you're willing to go newer) or the Belladonna or Balac VTOLs. Personally, I'd go for some speed, but that's just personal preference speaking.

I would add more vehicles/infantry (this is a Hell's Horse unit).
I think the ideal might be:
- 2 'Mechs, 2 Infantry/ProtoMechs/Elemental Points and 1 Vehicle Point,
- 2 'Mechs, 1 Infantry/ProtoMechs/Elemental Points and 2 Vehicle Points.
