Has anyone else read these comics from the mid-1990s?
« on: October 13, 2013, 01:35:34 PM »

I downloaded all four of these BT comics, then converted them over to PDF.

It seemed like the art was pretty good (for the '90s, anyway), but when I cracked the covers, things kinda went downhill.

The art wasn't bad.  But the writing?  Really awkward - I've never met anyone who talked like that.  Maybe they were lampooning the (then-current) TV show's dialogue?

The story itself was kinda confusing.  Characters get thrown at us, barely established before they get eliminated in an explosion or something.  And I could tell the writers and artists had not done very much research into the BTU itself.... or they would have known a Union Class DropShip did not enter the atmosphere nose-first... or land on it's side.  You can see the landing gear partially extended, but entering nose-first woulda fried all the sensor gear at the pointy end.

I dunno.  Anyone else get a chance to read this comic series?  I see 'em for sale on Ebay from time to time.  They even have a holographic First Issue, which is ironic, given the TV show did wire-frame '3-D' action shots.

Actually, the show itself kinda bugged me.  I mean, we had ReBoot in 1994.  Even completely computer-generated, it featured writing that was leaps and bounds ahead of...  ah, never mind.  This has all been hashed out elsewhere.

But I thought the comics were interesting, at least at first.

I've heard there were a couple different (short) series, but I haven't read them. I'm guessing that's not the one about the Black Widow during Anton's revolt... is it the one about the Belt Pirates during the Clan Invasion, or another one?

To be fair, it is crashing.

That would be The Spider and The Wolf.

The pictures kinda remind me of Battletech:Fallout but without digging it outta boxes I'm not sure.

The clip is from BattleTech: Fallout.

I know it's crashing, but entering the atmosphere top-first?  That crash would be catastrophic if there wasn't some way to slow down.

Maybe they just didn't know how to crash a non-aerodyne DropShip?

Finally, where inside the Union Class is that guy piloting from?  I thought that machine had a command deck, not just a pilot's chair.

Nevermind.  The writer goes to the trouble of having the characters learn each other's personal names - and then proceeds to have all communication between them addressing the 'Mech type, not the pilot inside....

Weird.  Almost like they are breaking the Fourth Wall and doing it so the reader knows what is going on....

Finally, I wish all Thors were that fragile in the games I've played...

Heck I have the entire Blackthorne series... they were decidedly mediocre in terms of comic stories.

Well they also blow up the planet at the end of Fallout if I remember correctly. Not the best comic series ever but its somewhat BattleTech.

Oy.  I looked.

It was 'just' an asteroid.  But one big enough to hold an earthlike-atmosphere so the characters could walk around dressed like characters from a Rob Liefeld comic but not die from lack of oxygen.  And it had standing water.

And yes, they blew it up.  I gotta agree with that Clan Commander - WTF?  How are you able to blow up something that big - and still get your butt handed to you by mere 'Mechs?
