Optimizing the Clint
« on: March 29, 2020, 10:57:18 PM »

The fifteenth optimization challenge for the InnerSphere stays in the forty-ton weight class with the Clint. Not as fast as our first two forties the Clint is more of a fighter who says 'go ahead, make my day'. I didn't really appreciate this design until BattleTech: Shattered Dawn came along and Irose really opened my eyes to just how versatile it was. Let's see what you guys can do with this Medium BattleMech which I expect to have a lot of different variants.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a Mech of the Week Article over on CBT of the CLNT-*** Clint but there is always sarna!

BattleTechwiki Page for the Clint
https://www.sarna.net/wiki/Clint

Design Criteria
Design: Clint Medium BattleMech
Era: 3052, just following the Truce of Tukayyid
Tech: InnerSphere Level 2
Mass: 40 tons

Tech Base
The tech base for this enterprise will be InnerSphere Level 2, also known as Star League lostech, circa 3053. Remember some Level 1 standards which Bradshaw and myself think still have value like Large Lasers and PPCs which feature the same damage factor as their higher tech brethren with less range and perhaps most significantly less heat. Here is a list for your design reference. Let me know if there is anything I missed!

Star League LosTech
Anti-Missile System
Arrow IV Artillery Missile System
Extended Range Large Laser (ER Large Laser)
Extended Range Particle Projection Cannon (ER PPC)
Gauss Rifle
Ultra Autocannon/5
LB 10-X Autocannon
One-Shot Missile Packs
Pulse Lasers (Small, Medium, & Large)
Streak SRM-2
Swarm LRMs
Thunder LRMs
Artemis IV FCS
Beagle Active Probe
Guardian ECM Suite
Myomer Accelerator Signal Circuitry (MASC)
Narc Missile Beacon
TAG
Cellular Ammunition Storage Equipment (CASE)
Double Heat Sinks
Endo Steel Internal Structure
Ferro-Fibrous Armor
Extra Light (XL) Engine

InnerSphere Low Tech
Blazer Cannon (or Binary Laser)
Recon Camera
Remote Sensor Dispenser

New Innovations
Triple Strength Myomer
Hatchet
C3 Computer

Design Traits of this Setting
The Free Worlds League in particular have embraced massed LRM-5s over the larger batteries to provide closer mass equivalents to Clan LRMs. Thanks to a corresponding increase in NARC units these ‘fire teams’ have become quite effective in the Marik Civil War. Also, the Blazer has made an appearance in the shattered FWLM searching for an advantage over their former brethren.
Both the Federated Commonwealth and ComStar seem to have gone in the other direction with LRM batteries preferring larger LRM-15s and 20s linked to Artemis IV FCS to enhance accuracy.
Many Draconis optimizations have included the C3 System which is accelerated from the canon setting which saw their deployment lag.
Regional factions like the Draconis March and the Periphery have seen the introduction of some ‘simple’ lostech items like Double Heat Sinks, Ferro-Fibrous, Streak SRM-2s, and Pulse Lasers. Extra-Light (XL) Engines remain too expensive and have drawbacks which make their deployment unlikely here. Advanced orbital facilities needed for EndoSteel manufacturing also remain out of reach at this point. They are not beyond using PPCs and Large Lasers either which they view as more efficient than their ER successors.

Please do your research (think Objective Raids) for available components as this will be another factor in rapid production. I love fluff and your winning designs will be featured in my BattleTech Salient Horizon alternate setting. I'd like to go beyond the refits bought to you by Technical Readout 3050 and delve into extensive redesigns of your BattleTech favorites. Sharpen up your favorite war machines perhaps drawing on past or current variants while remembering the spirit or role of these Mechs. Don't forget to justify the expense of your project and multiple winners are possible. Figure that all entries have to be completed and posted on these forums by Friday April 10th, 2020 by 11:59 PM which should give you all a full two weeks for this contest, good luck!!

Expanding into the Federated Suns was seen as a gamble by stockholders of Defiance Industries, but with a large amount Davion space relatively untapped resource wise the Lyran behemoth was more than able to take advantage of this fact. Diversifying the company and creating the Defiance WarWorks name in Davion space made sense with the tax incentives they were able to gain as a "new" company on the poetically chosen planet of Defiance. Easing the friction caused by this moving into traditionally Davion weapon contractors territory was at first very severe but actions and backroom deals were made and the result was that certain systems are subcontracted out to others such as the GM 280 XL engine from Johnston Industries or the communications and targeting systems from Achernar BattleMechs.

The design itself is something that has thrilled former Clint 'Mech Techs. Long known as a technician's nightmare the Defiance design has basically started from the ground up, but at a cost. The original Clint's were known as being designed as a cheap recon unit, Defiance is hoping to change that reputation. Originally having a top speed of 97.2 km/h, this new variant tops that at 118.8 kph, while maintaining the 180 meter jump radius. Utilizing the latest in Lostech the DW variant incorporates Defiance's own blend of Endo Steel and Durallex Ferro Fibrous armor. This with the inclusion of the larger but lighter GM XL engine gives a lot of versatility to its supplementing weaponry. Changing the role of the Clint from scout to scout hunter is the DW's role. Incorporating both the Defiance ER PPC and Large Laser gives the design a much more potent punch than many other designs in its weight category. With its increased speed, armor and firepower the first opponent that believes this is the old Clint is waiting for a rude awakening.

A common field refit seen by mercenaries and periphery forces utilizing the Clint Battlemech. A kit that takes some effort with the conversion of the integrated heat sinks in the older Pitban 240 engines but easily handled by veteran Mech Techs. Beginning by replacing the ammo dependent Armstrong J11 Autocannons with a variety of ER Large Lasers that have begun filtering their way down now even to some of the lesser powers throughout the Inner Sphere. The smaller size and tonnage of the laser gives the option of adding another medium laser to the design, additional armor coverage and an additional heat sink. All these positives can make it obvious why this variant is quickly gaining popularity among Clint pilots.

Not able to be completed in time for Battle of Tukayyid, the Comstar variant of the Clint coming from Skopel Mechworks of Terra, is based off intelligence gained by ROM about second line variants seen on some Clan held worlds. Fixing the issues with the original framework with the changes to the Skopel Template structure the designers were able to return to the original design and add the Autocannon 10 back to the frame. Utilizing the 'Mech-mounted shotgun gives the design much greater flexibility on the battlefield swapping back and forth between the critical seeking cluster rounds and the armor piercing standard slugs. Unable to keep the speed from the original design was the drawback to this increase in firepower but it was a sacrifice many felt fine making. Skopel with the assistance of ROM have been able to redesign the Sloane 220 Lockover System thanks to finding references to the schematics sent in old HPG transmissions intercepted during the 1st Succession War. Four Martell medium lasers back up the Imperator Code Red LB-X Autocannon.

A variety of the Clint thats found some popularity as a refit coming from the Bell Refit Yards. Intelligence coming out of Capellan space talks about a variant incorporating pulse laser technologies, Davion looking to see what might be possible have begun a small project at experimenting with the design. Long known for multiple variants due to the need to replace many of the inferior components, engineers have put together a rather serviceable design. Utilizing smaller captured Nissan 200 engines has lowered the speed of the design but allowed for the inclusion of a larger package of weaponry and equipment. Seeing the new design as a defender and not as a scout the long ranges of the AC/5 were not needed instead the Large Pulse Laser fits the role as primary weaponry for the design with its increase accuracy collateral damage is lessened as the 'Mech fights in urban settings. An additional Medium Laser was also added to the design to finalize its offensive improvements, to fill its role as urban hunter though an active probe system has been added along with remote sensors to allow it monitor a much larger area.

Had a stockpile of ones I did before this pandemic appeared only up to 50 tons though. Might trim it down depending on inspiration for the fluff. I def got 2 of them the thought lit other two were just designs that I put on paper so to speak

Thinking of some Clint Eastwood easter eggs and a particular variant myself that will be asking 'Do you feel lucky? Well do ya, punk!'

Now where can I drop Callahan in the InnerSphere?

Also found this link for others looking for inspiration.

Re: Optimizing the Clint
« Reply #7 on: March 30, 2020, 06:40:39 AM »

The Clint, despite being relatively rare, has always been a popular design with the Taurian Defense Forces.  Used a cavalry mech, the Clint is commonly found in many of the Concordat's lighter units, such as the Red Chasseurs and the Hyades Light Infantry.  Unfortunately the Clint suffers from the problem of being a maintenance nightmare due to the non-standard parts used by Andoran Industries.  In an effort to improve the reliability and availability of the Clint, the TDF began a major reconstruction program.  Stripping the mechs down to a bare chassis, they were rebuilt using new, readily available parts that would improve the performance of the mech and simplify repairs.

The modifications to the Clint start with the heart of the mech it's fusion engine and motive systems.  While the Pitban 240 is a common model and highly reliable, the mech's Gyro is not.  While some thought was give to simply replacing the Gyro with the same model used by the Griffin produced Vandenberg Mechanized Industries on Illiushin, the TDF eventually decided on a more radical modification.  In an effort to free up more room for additional weaponry and armor, the Pitban 240 was replaced with the Warner 200E produced by Magna for the Lightning Aerospace fighter. The old balky gyro was replaced with the new one that is being developed for the Concordat's Hatchetman.  The combination of the smaller engine and gyro freed up significant room for other improvements.

Always light armored, new Clint features 7.5 tons of Durallex Light Ferro-Fibrous armor.  This more then doubles the protection of the Clint, allowing to survive multiple hits. Complementing the heavier armor is a new more powerful weapons array.  The main complaint about the Clint's weapons is the lack of ammunition for the Armstrong Autocannon.  To solve this problem the auto cannon has been replaced with a Donal PPC. This provides a hard hitting, long range punch that does not rely on ammunition.  The Clint retains the 2 Martell Medium Lasers and mounts a Shannon Fore SRM 4 Launcher to provide an additional punch at close range.  To protect the mech from an ammo explosion the SRM ammo is stored in a CASE protected ammo bin.

Other changes to the Clint include the use of Double Heatsinks to compensate for the heat output of the new weapons array,  the replacement of the old Andoran Model JJIII with newer Rawlings 54 models and the replacement of the Radon R1 comm system with the Neil 5000.  The Clint does retain the superb Sloane 220 Lockover System which is considered one of the finest targeting systems ever developed.

Having completed testing a prototype, the TDF has began retrofitting all of the Clints at Pinard Protectorates Limited facility on MacLeod Land. There has been some discussion of a possible variant that replaces the Shannon Fore launcher with a Delta Dart LRM 5 launcher for additional long range firepower.

The CLNT-2-4D is an experimental model that has been developed by the New Avalon Institute of Science.  Based on the original prototype Clint, the CLNT-1-2R, which mounted a Armstrong Buster AC/10, the new model attempts to improve the firepower of the Clint while avoiding the problems that made the -2R a failure. The original CLNT-1-2R was forced to make a number of design compromises in order to mount the heavier autocannon, the NAIS engineers avoided these issues by replacing the old Pitban fusion engine with the new GM 240XL engine, while requiring more space in the mech, it significantly reduced the weight of the engine, freeing up more room for other improvements.

The biggest change was the replacement of the old Armstrong Autocannon with the new Mydron Excel LB-10X.  This doubled the firepower of the Clint, giving the mech a big gun to go with it's highly accurate Sloane 220 Lockover Targeting System.  To prevent the flaws that faced the -2R, the chassis has been strengthen, allowing the Clint to withstand repeated firings of the Mydron Excel.  To ensure adequate endurance on the battlefield, the Clint now carries 2 tons of ammunition for the autocannon.  The ammunition is stored in large ten round clips, similar to the Enforcer, making reloading a quick process.  The secondary weaponry is unchanged from the CLNT-2-3T.

The other major change to the Clint is the replacement of the old Durallex Medium armor with 6 tons of StarGuard Ferro-Fibrous Armor.  This provides a nearly 50% increase in armor protection, allowing the Clint to better survive on the modern battlefield.

The new Clint has been undergoing trials at the NAIS where it has received rave reviews from the Mechwarriors assigned to the program.  There are rumors that the AFFC is looking to establish a refit yard on Bell at the site of the old Andoran Industries to upgrade the existing Clints.  It is believed that the CLNT-2-4D modifications will be preformed at this facility.

There is also some rumors that the Clint may be restored to production in the near future.  The NAIS design team has suggested that a production variant of the CLNT-2-4D, the CLNT-2-5D. This model would replace the original Andoran Model III Chassis with an endosteel version and use the weight savings to provide a CASE for the mech ammunition and an addition 1.5 tons of armor.

The CLNT-2-3Z was developed by the Capellan Confederation after one of their engineers realized the stupidity of the CLNT-2-3U upgrade.  While the replacement of the ammo dependent Armstrong Autocannon with the more powerful Magna Firestar ER PPC was a significant upgrade, the replacement of the Martell Medium Lasers with pulse laser was, at best, a dumb idea.  The short range of the of Medium Pulse Lasers, combined with the Clint's use as a sniper or in hit and run operations, made the pulse lasers nearly worthless.  After the first several refits of the -3T into the -3U it was suggested that it might be better to keep the original Martell Medium Lasers and use the available mass to upgrade the mech's armor.  One Clint was modified with 6.5 tons of Hellespont Lite Ferro-Fibrous Armor.  It was determined that the mech could take significantly more damage, allowing to survive longer on the battlefield.  Based on these results, the upgrade kit for the Clint was modified, instead of replacing the medium lasers, it included new armor modules that would replace the old armor.  While a bit more involved (although most of the armor had to removed anyway to make the necessary upgrades to the cooling system) it was decided the extra effort was well worth it.  All remaining Capellan CLNT-2-3Ts are being upgraded to the -3Z configuration and those that have already been modified to to the -3U will be receiving the armor upgrade in the near future.

Wow, three from Irose. Well here is my version dreamed up last night. Enjoy!

CLNT-3-GT CLINT

Mass: 40 tons
Chassis: Andoran Model III
Power Plant: Hermes 240 XL
Cruising Speed: 64 kph
Maximum Speed: 97 kph
Jump Jets: Andoran Model JJII
Jump Capacity: 180 meters
Armor: Durallex Super Medium Ferro-Fibrous
Armament:
1 Poland Main Model A Gauss Rifle
1 Martell Medium Laser
Manufacturer: Andoran Industries Limited
Primary Factory: Bell
Communication System: Raldon R1
Targeting & Tracking System: Sloane 220 Lockover System

Overview:
For those Clint Mechwarriors unsatisfied with their firepower some errants, gladiators, and mercenaries have begun to customize their venerable war machine with the most powerful ballistic weapon known to man. Using pieces of other lostech refits they have been able to craft this dangerous upgrade package which is becoming standardized around the InnerSphere.

Capabilities:
The goal of the entire project from the start was to replace the Armstrong Autocannon/5 with a Gauss Rifle. Utilizing the Poland Main Model A would deliver at least three times as much damage to opponents as the older AC/5 which was also shorter ranged. Designers swapped the old Pitban 240 Fusion Engine for the lighter Hermes 240 XL from the RFL-5M Rifleman in order to get the mass necessary for such an operation. This was largely responsible for the almost three million C-bill increase in this Clint’s price tag from the original model. Some disliked the fragility of the bulkier light weigh power planet which undercut its durability not to mention the limited amount of ammo and armor it featured. Replacing the four and half tons of Durallex Medium with four tons of Durallex Super Medium Ferro-Fibrous from the HCT-5S Hatchetman did address this issue somewhat. However, because of the massive size of the Gauss Rifle a half ton of armor had to be removed offering the identical amount of protection of its forebearer. A Martell Medium Laser mounted in the left torso also had to be removed in order to make room for the massive ballistic canon. Despite these drawbacks the dramatic increase in offensive firepower was considered worth it by some Clint Mechwarrior who want to make someone’s day.

Majority of fluff is done, might alter some later but the intent is there.

Tak, I'd drop it down to 5/8/5 and make in Capellan would make a good companion design for Liao Hunchbacks. Could get an additional ton of ammo out for it and more armor.

An interesting idea Bradshaw. Standard 200 Fusion Engine weighs in at 8.5 tons correct? Loss a ton for the gyro (could have a story behind that, perhaps previously scrapped Clints from a junkyard, the gyro was frequently taken), and minus half a ton for jump jet. Would need another ton to make that work but I like the cost drop and the durability increase. EndoSteel chassis would make it work but I'd have to say a FedCom version is more likely given they control Bell and apparently Defiance Industries of Furillo is soon to produce new models in 3055 (per canon).
