Here is my entry for the 50 ton Zombie: Fire Watch :)

OVERVIEW

For the 50 ton Zombie omnimech.  Here is another one designed by three clans, the lead clan being warrior merchants of Clan Dimond Shark. This time they partnered with this with Clan Cloud Cobra and Snow  Raven.

At first this seemed odd pairing until the source of its fusion engines came to light.  Since both Clan's affinity for aerospace fighters, they looked at their brian caches for possible sources of the 250 Fusion engine and they found that they had nearly three star’s worth of  hellcat II's in storage at different states.  The technicians of the engineering group were tasked in hauling out the  fusion engines and refurbishing them for use in a mech.  The Hellcat II airframes were repaired minus the engines and were returned to storage.

The chassis they based their design on was the Shadow Cat, with Clan Dimond Shark having this mech in its inventrory, It was easy to reverse engineer the design and make the appropriate changes to help it suit the new battlefield requirements.

The mech was named the Fire Watch, a term that has been used in Armies for centuries and this time its use is for operation quicksilver.   Just like its previous submissions and incarnation, MASC was included to help it with a burst of speed when it needs it.

The scientists that were given orders to minimize the redesign of the external appearance of this mech.  So that from casual observation or using the T&T systems that this mech would be identified as a Shadow Cat.   This should help it surprise its opponents on the battlefield. Primary weapons are energy and missle based.

CAPABILITIES

The Prime version is designed to be a general purpose mech.  It can engage its targets with the LRM 20 with Artemis IV and three tons of ammunition, as it gets closer it can use the Lg Pulse laser and three ER Med Lasers.  For up close anti-infantry/battle armor, a Heavy MG was mounted and a half ton ammo provided.

Type A variant is designed to fight independently of most ammunition needs.  An ECM was added to help it hide and avoid being targeted by enemty T&T systems.  A targeting computer was installed and paired with an ER PPC and 4 ER Med Lasers.  A Streak SRM 4 was installed in the head to help it exploit any damage the energy weapons caused.

They Type B was designed for anti-infantry/Battle-Armor.  An active probe was installed to help it find hidden infantry and battle armor.  Therefor Four A-pods were installed, one on each arm and one on the Rt and Lt Torsos.  A flamer was added to each arm.  An ER med laser and an ER sm laser was added.  An ER Lg laser was also installed on the arms to fight targets at medium to long range.

Type C is used for long range fire support role.  As much as the clan's detest the suggested "fire-support" role for this type.  It has been determined that it is needed.  The battles with inner sphere forces have taught the design group to equip this with a pair of LRM 15 with Artemis IV and three tons of ammunition each. The ammunition should be sufficient to fight the innersphere forces.  Four ER Med lasers are added to help it combat forces that gets close.

The Type D was designed for urban or difficult terrain.  Jump jets were installed to give it a max 150 meter jump capacity.  An ECM was added to help it hide or avoid being targeted by enemy T&T systems.  Two ER Med Lasers and two ER sm lasers were installed for medium to up close firepower.  The biggest hitter for this the four SRM 6 racks.  With two in each arm installed and  has three tons of ammo provided for long engagements.

Type E was designed for use in Clan Trials.  With combat usually being one on one.  This model was equipted with an additional five double heatsinks for a total heat dissipation capacity of 30.  For all this capacity, an ER PPC is installed on the Lt and Rt Torso for long to medium rang fire power.  They were mounted there for the amount of armor they carry.  And for up close a pair of ER Sm laser is installed in the arms.

DEPLOYMENT

Once all the omnimechs were assembled and it came to a total of 26 chassis, A star worth of Mechs were given to each respective Clan’s to test out for a total of 15 mechs.  Four of five of the mechs were given to warriors that recently passed their Trials of Position and the fifth mech being given to the ones that recently passed the Trial of Position for Star Commander.  It is expected that these mechs will be used as a Star and assigned a variety of missions to test out its capabilities.

The remaining eleven mechs were sent to Strana Mechty for evaluation in the Operation Quicksilver.  If its approved for general deployment its expected that the Clan’s Cloud Cobra and Snow Raven will produce the mech.  While Clan Dimond Shark can trade or trial this design to other clan’s that would want to build it.  It has been agreed that Clan Dimond Shark will be the one defending any trails for the design of this mech and the other two clan’s will refuse this design to be included in any trials.

The Clans don't seem to be too good at building Zombies.

The Clans are all about pushing the envelop and getting the most bang out of thier equipment.  that is still reflected in Takiro's speed limitations which still emphasize speed when a good Zombie needs durability and firepower.

That's why my Stormbringer has a massive 23 tons of pod space and can move at 86kph as long as the MASC holds out. When that dies, the Stormbringer is nothing more than a pillbox

With a quad you're looking at about 19 tons if you use ES FF and max out the the armor, and go with a 250

Got some really good competition probably the best yet. Everyone has a good name, solid fluff, and superior designs. Makes my job more and more challenging.

When I make Zombies I try to minimize cost and maximize firepower, and I squeezed 20 tons with only Ferro and not quite maxing armor but still making it a brick.

That's a good strategy JP. Zombies are slow, max armor, and high firepower to me but Quicksilver has blended in some Clan design preconceptions with real world production goals.

Still waiting on your submission Dragon Cat and everyone else who'd like to join the fun!

Well I have got to say great job all the way around gang. This contest has been home to the best design entries by far. Every single submission is well done with solid names, concept, fluff, and design. While my job is most challenging this time around the review has been a lot of fun especially reading your background story for each would be Omni. Very Entertaining, thank you all!

N/A. Black Widow (Abele) [WITHDRAWN]
This Cloud Cobra Quad was withdrawn by Abele but I still have a copy from which to judge. First off I love the mobility (5/8/5) which I really favor in mediums and 9.5 tons of ferro fibrous produce a max 182 armor factor for 50 ton quads. With one fixed rear mounted ER Small Laser and 14 tons of pod space it is probably a little light on offense but the weapon configurations are solid. Unfortunately Abele withdraw this fascinating design so I can not give it an overall ranking in comparison to others. Basis on the Stalking Spider is solid idea but a little early as Cobra scientists only began designing it after they obtained a wrecked Tarantula. The Tarantula was not introduced until 3054 so it is a tad premature to be using it for a base design in 3052. The name was pure awesomeness but I would have loved to have a link to Natasha Kerensky to give it a complete feel. In all honesty you probably would not have won this contest but please do not delete your entries I love to read through them and I am sure others would too. I hope you will continue in your goal to submit a winning Quad design before this contest is over.

8. Fire Watch (Shadow Wraith)
The name is good but I do not see this OmniMech ever being the first line of anything going from a Clan mindset, maybe I am just reading it wrong. Likewise the Shadow Cat basis is an interesting choice but why not go with another design like the Mongrel which is available to the Sharks? The Cat maybe in their inventory but they may lack manufacturing rights to this Nova Cat design. The use of Hellcat II engines is highly innovative and with a MASC your design has very nice speed. 19 tons of pod space for weapons and equipment is one of the better amounts for our contest. Configurations B (yikes for infantry) and E (twin ER PPCs can not be bad) I liked the best. With only 8 tons of ferro fibrous you have the lowest amount of protection (184) but I can not complain, still pretty good for a medium. All in all pretty damn good design just a bunch of good competition this time Shadow Wraith.

7. Slepnir (LordGrayson)
The fluff on this Nova redux as put forth by the Hell’s Horses is pretty good and the concept of using the Nova as a basis for this design is excellent. The name while very horse is close to being non Clan but it is acceptable. I also like the other Clan names for the design like the Blood Fang and Fire Fang. Using an EndoSteel structure enables more tonnage for pod space which is good design wise but requires new molds for advanced materials which the Nova does not. So it gets away from its forerunner a little too much despite some design advantages. 18.5 tons of pod space for weapons and equipment and the configurations are interesting but again the Norse theme is a little too un Clan like to me. The 5/8 movement with a MASC for bursts of 10 MP is very nice and 8.5 tons of ferro fibrous makes for a solid 163 armor factor. Try something a little more Clan like and perhaps generic for your name next time LordGrayson. Otherwise nicely done.

6. Frost Liger (drakensis)
This Omni-Chameleon put forth by Hell’s Horses has the biggest power plant in the contest. Going an impressive 6/9 with its massive (for this challenge anyway) 300 Fusion engine is a nice touch and such power plants would likely be far more available than the 250. The fluff is solid and I really liked the name with the Frost Liger becoming another species unique to Clan space. The 8.5 tons of ferro fibrous makes for a near max 163 armor factor which is pretty good protection. On the other side of things the 13 tons of pod space for weapons and equipment is lightest of the contest. The configurations I liked especially how some are based on venerable designs like the Starslayer and Trebuchet. Admittedly I did not fall in love with the idea of a Clan 50 trainer but it is a solid design and could have won if not for the five entries I felt were better.

5. Dawn Badger (fitzgerald)
This Hell’s Horses entry named well after a fierce native competitor of the Cloud Cobra and Steel Viper is a good one even though it is not really based on any previous design. The name really matches the design with its “honey badger attitude” and I wish there was more fluff. The EndoSteel structure on its generic humanoid frame adds to its capabilities nicely. This savings enables the design to go 5/8/5 thanks to integral jump jets a bonus for mobility. 15 tons of pod space for weapons and equipment is descent enough and I like the configurations including Prime with its Gauss Rifle along with A’s updated Wolverine feel. 9 tons of ferro fibrous armor leaves armor protection on the ground, exceeds the max armor factor, which I do not care for but it is a tough son of a gun. Unfortunately I just feel there are four better designs.

4. Thunder Hound (Master Arminas)
Another near masterful job by Arminas in presenting this Cloud Cobra Quad. The fluff was very interesting and I liked the story of a mad SLDF General out to annihilate all traces of the Free Worlds League leaving behind a useless Brain Cache on the Pentagon Worlds. The only critique is it still a bit early to use the Stalking Spider for the reasons I posted in the Black Widow review. The name is absolutely amazing and I really have to keep track of all your inspired Clan “creations”. I loved the additional bit about these massive canines and the Goliath Scorpions fondness of familiars. The design is very solid with its use of EndoSteel to gain more mass at the expense of criticals. 17 tons of pod space for weapons and equipment is adequate for the Zombie on hand and I liked your configurations. The 9.5 tons of ferro fibrous plating create a max 182 armor factor for 50 ton quads which is excellent. 5/8/5 is great maneuverability, a big plus, and the way in which all those 250 Fusion engines were obtained from the junk cache is a nice touch even if it is a bit non canon. Sorry to say you ran into some excellent competition here MA, only good enough for fourth place.

3. Snake Eater (JPArbiter)
Our third Quad entry is via the Blood Spirits and their not so friendly named Omni, the Snake Eater. Top marks for fluff that successfully cites the “Speed Gap” which the Clans do not want breached. I really liked the input of the Wolf Khans and others who have actually met the enemy in the field, gritty testimonials I can appreciate. So with a 4/6 movement rate that with a MASC can top out at 8 MPs is below standards but I can see it going beyond initial rejections. Especially because of the 20 tons of pod space for weapons and equipment which is the second highest seen during this contest. I like how some configurations were modeled after Clan ‘Mechs like the Howler and the Osprey, very nice touch. Also there is a passing mention to the Stalking Spider as a work in progress which is the best done for Quads so inspired in this contest. Also top marks for the 9.5 tons of ferro fibrous produce that max 182 armor factor for 50 ton Quads. Congrats on the bronze!

2. Stormbringer (Abele)
Of course I love the name of this scaled down Black Knight IIc which the Diamond Sharks tried to take Omni. While it does violate criteria it is a true Zombie design that is hard not to really appreciate. The 200 Fusion Power Plant from the Mongoose and Chapparal lumbers along at 4/6 but has an integral MASC for bursts of 8 MPs. 9 tons of ferro fibrous was a little much making for a 169+ armor factor which left some protection on the ground. I probably would have carried the other half of ton into pod space which is already very impressive at 23 tons for weapons and equipment. The configurations are really nice especially Primary which comes close to matching the number of weapons the original Black Knight had. Great job Abele, good enough for second place and I would like to keep the Black Knight IIc as a new Clan BattleMech.

1. Quasar (Smegish) [Fire Mandrill Nova redux]
The Fire Mandrill redo of the Nova (aka the Black Hawk) was fantastic for a first time entrant. The fluff style is a little different but the point of view of a third party was an enjoyably done. With the exception of Kindraa Payne I could see the Fire Mandrills making such a trade with the Ghost Bears even if it is just a rumor. The name is dead on as a new model of the venerable Nova. Basing your design on the widespread but out of production Nova is a winning idea to me. Essentially using the same standard chassis as the Nova is beneficial to both designs in terms of logistics enabling the Clans to keep existing models in the field and allowing newer “Zombies” to ease into production. Accounting for the 250 Fusion by way of the Crab is a nice touch and the 5/8 movement is a solid rate with a MASC boosting max speed to 10 on occasion. 8.5 tons of ferro fibrous making a 163 armor factor is an improvement over the original and 16 tons of pod space for weaponry and equipment matches it (even if it lacks integral jump jets). I also like the configurations and the comments attached to each. Congrats!

So there you have it team. Another contest in the books. Keep up the great work and I will see you soon for Quicksilver number 9!!
